Isn't failure a normal part of crafting?

    It is now.

You can avoid failures on your daily Sahha ball by power leveling. If you had level 3 crafting under the old system, you can just do the level 8 task for crafting Petals until you have leveled the worker up to 6. This task uses only gold. At this point, she won't have any chance to fail the sailcloth or ball tasks. If you are starting with a character that had no prior skill, be sure to complete the daily quest to do 3 events at least one day. This will give you enough crafting mats to level your skill and worker to the point where the petal task is unlocked.

If you happened to fail the task early on, because you didn't level/didn't notice the low completion percentage (having already levelled the crafter in the past some people didn't clue in that the new one was starting over at no skill)… you're stuck. There is no way to replace those missing craft materials. One less Sahha ball for you!
