Companions guide?

I'm now like mid level 50 and all of the companions you can buy for gold are leveled to their starting max. And trying to find info on any significant benefits of one over another I've had no luck finding. Basically for starters what companions do I really want to have? Assuming not going for a collect them all goal (feasibility uncertain on that). And is there any reason at all to upgrade any of companion regardless if in game NPC obtained, zen store, or any other way to obtain any that I am not aware of? Thanks. And I'm sure I'll have more questions than these.
