Noble rescue quest won't complete

I did everything I could see to do. Left the last screen to end up next to a campfire with the boat waiting and the noble standing there. I went to the boat and it said there was unfinished business. I clicked the noble and it said I didn't have an exploding rune. I distinctly remember picking one up, not using it, but not seeing anywhere it was supposed to be used.

Now, I can't go back AND I have no exploding rune.

After going back to PE, River District, Coast, etc... I go all the way through again, with nothing there. I gave up and abandoned.
