Upon just entering Barovia, I was immediately granted completion (and rewards) of the Yester Hill Heroic even though I was not doing it and was nowhere near it.

    Yes, it happens. Are you sure you just entered there and not close enough to see the letters of the name of the last boss of YH HE? My experience is you need to see the name to get credit but that might be coincidence.

    I got credit once just changing instances to the HE. It ended before I could even leave the town and gave not only the HE rewards but satisfied the weekly quest. Was in a party with someone doing, obviously. I've had it complete other times when I never even went near it though.

    I think you would be close enough because you were in town. However, I know the default gate in the south side would be too far.

    The Heroic was on the opposite side of the map versus where I was - at the Barovia map entrance (the gate right next to the arguing npc trio ) that leads to the main world map. I had just entered Barovia following the load screen.

    Lucky you, then. It did not work for me when I came through that gate and was late to reach the site (people had just killed the boss before I got there).

    I have ridden into a nearly complete HE which ended before I could get close enough to attack and NOT gotten credited with completion. There is likely something going on besides proximity.

    I agree with @pitshade since the same has happened to me. Proximity is either not the trigger or is only one part of it.
