I hope this is one of many core gameplay improvements because otherwise it would be a complete waste of time if the rest of the game rots around it, and professions also only appeal to a minority rather than the majority.
The Companion system for example needs a big overhaul too. Instead of having abilities tied to each companion, they can be broken up into categories (beast, humanoid, weapon, magical etc) and have each companion unlock a new attack which you can "slot" just like mounts, that way you can go collect them all whilst also customise your companion to your character. You can even make some interesting combinations with bleed/debuffs/buffs as well as healing/defensive skills.
Sure this is a lot of work, but after seeing the professions overhaul it does look like the passion is still there.
Could also add a pet battle system/card game system too :P
