Servers in America at West coast - why?

drazer#7967 drazer Member Posts: 7 Arc User
The biggest problem with this game, is for players in Europe that servers are located in America and on the west coast - as far away from Europe. Ping 220ms causes problems. You cant jump to the opponent, quick cast the Icy Terrain and rebound - spell is still interupted. I must to jump to foe/enemy, wait for 1 second, cast Icy Terrain, wait 1 second and now i can rebound. Developers, testing games with 220ms ping! Or need to shoot a video with tragedy mechanic in this game with 220ms ping?
If they are not in Europe, why are they not at least on the East Coast? Why so much hate Europeans??!

I think your information is inaccurate. While the development studio itself is on the west coast, I am fairly certain that the servers themselves are on the east coast somewhere. While the exact location is kept secret for security reasons, I believe they are somewhere in either the New York City or Boston areas.

That's what I was thinking too, but I wasn't 100% sure. Hadn't thought to look at the tracert, lol.

Now that people have begun to figure out they are somewhere near Boston they are going to have to move them again to keep the Thayans guessing.

Admittedly it can be annoying, but you can adapt - just be glad you aren't here in Australia where it's 350 on a good day and 400 is the norm.

While more servers in various locations sound great to me please read the wiki about "Lag, Network, and Server Issues" (aka Latency) and possible causes.

Location and quantity is only part of the problem.

Pretty sure they're in Cambridge (right outside Boston). Lot of datacenters in that area and it would explain my 20 ping to the servers. Living in MA finally pays off!

The problem could be your ISP too, but more than likely it is a combination of a lot of different factors.

I guess may be indeed in California. However, I don't know if that shows the actual address of the IP address or the address of the owner of the IP address.

    In my tracert,

@plasticbat Cogent Communications is just an ISP that holds the address to Cryptic along with many others. If you had sway with your local ISP, you could get them to talk (add it to their DNS) directly with Cryptic Studios. For example; we have Spectrum Cable here in my city. If I had pull with my local ISP, I could ask them to jump straight to Cryptic or something closer on the list. This is called changes to their "routing policy" and is normally done by businesses and major company with enough pull to have some geek (like my husband for example) to add a few lines of code somewhere on their server. In the end, it is up to the various ISPs around the world to negotiate how they will route traffic through and around their networks.

Well if Europe had been a little more obliging to our ancestors, the servers would probably be over there.
    - let that be a lesson to all you other continents!

Is the Russian server in the US, or is it in Russia? Just curious, not that it would help people in other parts of Europe, but...

The question is if Cryptic server is in Boston or not. Unless there is a direct dedicate line(s) from Boston to Cryptic (that is kind of common in business), the physical location of the server should be close to Boston. Otherwise, tracert will show the intermediate hop. There is no hop between 38.111.40.114 (Cogent's IP) and 198.49.243.253 (Cryptic's IP).
On the other hand, if Cryptic indeed has a dedicate line from Boston to California, it really does not matter if the server is in Boston or in California. The speed would be like the physical server is located in Boston.

You cannot make your ISP to jump straight to Cryptic because Cryptic is not a major network hub. You can ask ISP to make a better route for you. However, there are hops in between. You cannot eliminate that unless there is a direct line. That is you cannot make a train to go from (say) Boston to Florida "directly" without passing through any train station no matter how you route it.
