Just refined this to epic level and the Lumen refinement items are no longer in the list when attempting further refinement.

That is correct. It uses regular refining to go higher. It even tells you that the event allows you to upgrade to epic.

Ah my apologies... I can't see where it explains this I presumed it was a bug. Presumably then the lumens are worthless after the artifact surpasses rare?

Normally, in the past that would be true. With the changes to refinement coming in a few weeks, I understand some event refinement items will be able to be converted to the new refinement points making them usable. So, I would hold them until we know for certain which items will convert. Beacon of Simril is the only one I have seen confirmed.

It's a little vague on the epic explanation and it is only covered once when you start, it tells you something like participating every day during the event will allow the artifact to be upgraded to epic.
