Hello, I'm randomDigits and I'm not a DJ. I always run dungeons with a PUG, and only use chat, not a voice chat to coordinate. I don't know how typical my setup is but I like the challenge and would like to discuss here running TONG with a PUG in a hope to share some tips and tricks which worked for me or you. I don't have enough motivation to sketch a full guide here, so if you need an intro - learn it by doing or search a high-level guide on the web (there is at least one I'm aware of).
What makes PUG a PUG is that we typically have one DC and one OP or GF, which are our most valuable assets and the rest of the group are a combination of "DPS" characters - CW, TR, SW, GWF and HR. DCs come in many flavors btw (see this thread for example), as do many classes nowadays.
Now, the first step or running the dungeon is reaching the first boss, and 100% of PUGs I ran with don't have problems with that. A couple of tips to save time for the first timers is to: a) watch for the evil face ornament on the wall to find the right path b) stay together while cleaning the first boss room so that you could quickly free you group members when they got controlled by the wraiths
Then comes the first boss fight and this is where the PUGs are failing all the time. Here are some tips from the most successful attempt (got the boss to 30% health) we had so far:
There are 4 components to the fight: a) tanking boss, so it does not kill dps b) intercepting spheres, so they don't kill everyone c) killing the zombies so they don't drain the interceptor's temp hp pool d) killing boss fast enough before the intercept guy runs out of temp hp
The left, interceptor, potion (which gives you x20 your HP as temp HP) in a PUG is best given to the lowest DPS/highest HP character. For example, if I play a buff/debuf CW I would take this potion and will make sure to agro only the boss and dodge/run away from the zombies. It helps if the interceptor has a legendary lion mount which gives a temp HP pool, but don't count on just it.
The middle (x2 damage to zombie, x0.5 damage to boss) potion is best given to a non-dps character, such as DC.
The right, (x2 damage to boss, but you are bleeding the HP) potion works best on a GWF, but generally anyone with high DPS who can bear the HP drain could take it. Be sure to take it last or you'll be dead before the fight starts.
During the fight, the interceptor's role is to avoid damage at all cost, except from the green spheres which start to appear after boss gets down to 90% HP. Avoiding damage means primarily avoiding zombies. So when you see yourself in a red AOE zone immediately do one of 2 things: run (not dodge) outside of the red zone or dodge towards the boss and away from the border. Dodging generally does not save you from the AOE but if you dodge to a place where you are located between the boss and the corner there is good chance that you won't fall to the pool with zombies.
During the fight it's good to let the group know how we are doing on the percentage of the temp HP remaining, so they could see if it's worth using mass life scrolls to resurrect. I would probably only start using mass life scrolls after boss is down to 25% or so. If interceptor is doing his job well, and the team takes out the zombie hoards well, the temp HP charge should last in theory for around 30 green spheres. In practice 15-20 spheres is the best what I was able to catch thus far.
Next, we'll talk about the second boss. Until then please share you feedback and suggestions.
