New to GF seeking advice please (X1)

Hello everyone!

Loving my Ranger class but am wanting to try out the Guardian Fighter class.

Any helpful advice is greatly appreciated and I hope to see you all out in the fields of battle sometime

I only have fundamental knowledge of an HR... but I would say I know the GF decently well.

GF will feel "slow" compared to the HR, as the "shift" ability merely raises our shield instead of moving you around. However, your GF can move rather quickly if you use Steel Grace with ITF, or combo ITF with Threatening Rush.

Imo Swordmaster tends to beat out Iron Vanguard in terms of useful abilities, but the GF has such a good base kit that you can really choose either and still do okay.

To get an idea of what type of GF to play, I would take a look at Barthos' analysis of the 3 GF types. The only thing he misses is how the Protector capstone is bugged (ie, does not work as intended), but otherwise, he's fairly spot on.

Once you've found the type of GF you like, you can take a look at a guide on the fourms.

Tony Chianti's Conqueror Guide is quite good and I'd reccomend it as a starting point. However, as a Conqueror in training myself, I would not reccomend trying it at endgame until you have worked up your fundamentals and gear. In additon, a Conqueror build is not "easy" to make and there's a lot of build choices which will require some game knowledge and insight about your own skills.

Harrier Took has a Protector guide here on the Guard Barracks. It is a very good guide and I'd reccomend it if you like charging around the battlefield and protecting your team.

And I myself have written a Tactician guide, both available here in the Guard Barracks and in my signature. I designed the build to make your team stronger in endgame content, in addition to the build helping you train your GF fundamentals. However, my build suffers when you try to solo content (campaigns, Stronghold HEs, etc.)

I also would take a peek at Grimah's GF Compendium. It is not specific to any GF path and has useful advice, but keep in mind that some of the advice is somewhat outdated. For example, Grimah suggests stacking Defense to boost ITF. That ... does not work anymore.

As I have recently spoke to an amazing GF, I will share the lesson that is the most pertinent to a new GF:

"[Don't overthink your GF too much] ... let experience be your teacher..."

Read some of the guides, then ask some more direct questions.

If you are willing to go through a few respecs, I'd level to end game using Conq for the extra DPS that will help grinding out the boons. But when you want to start tanking in DDs like CN you might want to spend some time as Protector (or Tact) until you hit 3K, then either respect to Tact (if you want to buff) or back to Conq if you want to do some more DPS.

I think the majority like SM and Conq, but I've always played a IV and mostly Tactician.
