How do I fix a gameclient exe memory leak?

aslan3775aslan3775 Member, NW M9 Playtest Posts: 295 Arc User
With the last patch, a significant amount of lag and rubber band issues were solved (for me anyway), but I have had for quite a while, a memory leak that appears to come from the gameclient executable. My memory begins at less than 30% used, and slowly creeps up to over 60% over the space of an hour or two. It creeps much faster if I am in group content like a DR with a full instance or a Tiamat or Demogorgon.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game. I have done force verify ( which i didn't think would do anything, and umm--it didn't.)

I am running Windows 7 latest service pack, and really don't want to 'upgrade' to Windows 10 if I don't have to install that OpSys.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

It "using the memory by caching everything to it"
so what if it is using memory it is supposed to you are reinstalling the game and windows possibly for nothing
there is a setting in the option menu to use more or less memory by caching game files and settings regarding video memory as well you might try different direct x modes and make sure no internet browsers with flash are running at the same time
if you performance is not being effected at all stop trying to fix something that aint broke and messing with stuff you dont understand
    play the game ...
the game normally needs 2 gigs of ram by the way
and they may have altered that games .exe behavior with regards to reserving or preallocating memory

I have found that in Windows 10 he new memory compression seams to conflict with the NW client if the game is left on to long. this is easily fixed by simply closing the game and restarting it. Even though it will bee nice if cryptic can fix this it is not a high priority. There is bigger issues that nead fixing first
There are more than BIS players in this game
RIP Real Tiamat, RIP Real Demogorgon RIP real Temple of the spider. Why remove non bis content to give to bis players ????
FORCING the majority of your player base to play 4 mod old dungeons and trial will have a bad result on player base
Changes are getting so bad i would rather prefer no new changes (RIP ICE FISHING in winter fest)

Apparently it was for nothing since It didn't fix the problem. The problem is that over time, it creates significant lag. And then shuts down the game.

No browsers with flash are running, but I will definitely try the option menu for memory

Performance is definitely affected--after less than a half hour, it is very difficult to play the game. Much longer, and then the game disconnects.

I have 8 gig ram. What do you mean regarding the .exe behavior?

Nobody plays this game for less than half an hour. If the issue is that bad, this forum would be full of people screaming bloody murder.

Do you have a discrete video card? Or are you using on-board video? On-board video uses system memory.

fixing it is as simple as closing out the game and restarting it. I have the leak too though not as bad as you seem to have it. Basically, once I start seeing lots of lag or rubber banding, I shut down the game and restart, only take maybe 2 mins to do so its not like im losing a ton of game time.

This is the 'fix' that I use right now. The issue is a bit of a concern because if I play for 15 to 30 minutes, then join a dungeon run, I start rubber banding during the middle of the dungeon. Do you just warn the other players in the dungeon that you need to disconnect for a minute or two?

Unfortunately, I have onboard graphics--so it is using system memory. That's why i said 8 gig. Not exactly a good gaming computer, but it is what I have right now.

I had that problem on my laptop and would just close out when the lag got too bad (usually about 1-2 hours) and relogged in and I was good again, when Mod 9 rolled out I could no longer use my laptop for game playing, but still could log in/out to do professions and invoke......since I got my new computer for Christmas I haven't noticed the problem (that doesn't mean it isn't there, I think my new computer can just "handle it better").

I have 2 guild members that had the same issue and as of Mod 9 were forced to stop playing because the memory leak happens too fast for their computers to handle it (during start up) and locks their system up, when they can check "task manager" they have to perform an "end task" or do a hard shut down, so until they get new computers they can't play

I use a laptop running Windows 7 with 8 GB ram. I don't have the mentioned problem. I seldom exit the game and let the machine runs 24x7. When I don't play, I let the game stays in character selection page. I exit the game usually in 2 conditions: 1. new patch coming in. 2. Game hang in loading.

I have 2 chrome instances + team speak running.

Anyway, I seldom have lag problem when others are talking about it (in Team Speak).

Memory consumption constantly stays in around 6GB.

I use my laptop like a desktop with dual monitor (a big monitor + the laptop screen).

Question to the un/affected Ssd or mechanical Hdd?
Please fix Zhentarim Warlock companion's skill "Arcane Warping" to the originally intended "Arcane Boost"

I use mechanical HDD with an integrated graphics. Do you have a separate graphics card? I am guessing that you do if you are running an additional screen.

I looked at the driver for my graphics and it appears to be up to date.

Since you are running a laptop with Win 7, I would like to believe that I have a setting or glitch that could be adjusted to make this issue disappear. Unless it is the graphics card.

I am using a laptop. I am not sure if I am using a separate graphic card or not. Most laptop can support 2 screens (an external monitor + its own screen) without anything fancy though including the cheapo dell laptop I had many years ago.
