Leaving Alliance Issue

Our guild was one of the few that was able to be invited before the 6/9 patch despite both the helm guild and our guild being formed late in 2013.
When the patch dropped on Thursday our Helm guild was unable to kick us. We needed to disolve so the intended helm guild could start the alliance and invite what was presently our helm in as their sword, we would then presumably become a gauntlet as we had all prearranged.
We tried clicking the leave alliance button on the alliance page and true to form there was very little information there to describe what would happen next. It appeared we were still in the alliance. We then had every rank 7 leader click the button, and still could not leave. Long story short, in order to leave we had to demote every rank 7 except for one single character, that character then needed to click the leave alliance button, which then removed us immediately from the alliance.
Many thanks to @damnacious for poring over the Star Trek Online forums, seeing an issue with the Armada system and speculating that could be the issue.
