Found the source of my lag

I started lagging REALLY bad a couple weeks ago... nothing in the "Lag" thread was working to fix it.

As I started to notice a certain pattern to when I would lag, I noticed that something was sucking down all my HDD utilization. It was slowing EVERYTHING on my computer to a crawl. Using Task Manager, I found the culprit: "System and Compressed Memory".

A quick Google search netted me thousands and thousands of results. So here's the breakdown:

There is something "not right" about Windows 10 and Google Chrome and/or Skype. There is something really screwy in there, and the combination will kill your HDD access. This was causing load times in excess of 4-5 minutes between maps, and "Seconds per Frame". My partner has a computer that's identical to mine but was not experiencing this issue. Turns out that my Chrome version is newer than her's.

So now when I play, I have to shut down my browser. Even if there's just a blank tab, the stupid "System and Compressed Memory" process sucks up all my HDD resources.

So if you are running Chrome and have it open while playing, and are experiencing excessive lag, bring up your Task Manager and see if it's "System and Compressed Memory" that's killing your disk usage. If that's the case, simply close your browser, wait a few moments, and it should be cleared up.

I hope this is useful to someone.

It's not just Windows 10 - if you're running Neverwinter on an encrypted or compressed hard drive, you should expect higher memory and HDD utilization. If your computer is already a little stressed by Nevewinter, this could cause serious performance issues for you.

Actually, the HDD was the culprit with my textures not loading properly problem. For the longest time I heard back down your Direct X and change this or that and nothing worked. As soon as I put Neverwinter on an SSD drive no more problems. There is something going on with HDD's and running this game and considering I run games at max like Rise of Tomb Raider with little or no problems at all I have to believe their is an issue in the coding somewhere or at least with how the game loads data. Of course that is just complete speculation on my part...

hdd access is really bad on basic coding realization i moved on a ssd +16gb of ram and the game still feels more sluggish than anything else.

    Also server lag.

And sometimes there is also a bug that lets the game be in the foreground but actuallty thinking it is a background taks making fps go in the low 20s.

    Also server lag.

I skipped Win ME, so I didn't really experience that too much. ;-)

...and the HDD usage issue came back after a few hours. Shutting down Chrome fixed it. I'll just keep doing this work-around until M$FT and Google decides to cooperate and fix it.

Chrome and Win10 in general are just awful together. I have tons of issues I never had before upgrading to Win10. Can't even leave the browser open over night without Windows saying it ran out of memory 5 seconds after I stopped looking at it. And windows loves to throw everything it possibly can into sleep mode; especially the things you have explicitly instructed it not to put into sleep mode after you found out some idiot coder decided that turning all your HAMSTER off in the middle of something was AWESOME. Before Win10 I could have a Chrome browser with 40 tabs open and a script constantly running non-stop for days on end with no problem. Now I can't even leave it unattended for more than a few minutes without risking Windows deciding to just turn off my browser, or throwing a memory error. And that was with the exact version of chrome I had before upgrading to Win10. Subsequent updates have done exactly nothing to resolve the issues.

Yeah, that same process is there and stayed there, even after I followed your instructions and restarted... but it wasn't slurping down HDD resources.
