Looking for advice on my starting stats for my Ranger

mikaleus#7208 mikaleus Member Posts: 38 Arc User
Hello everyone,

So I'm having a little difficulty in deciding on which race and stats my HR should be after racial bonuses.

Human - 18 Dex, 16 Wis. the extra defence and feats look great.

Wood Elf- 18 Dex/Wis. I see many wood elf rangers about and looking at their race bonuses, obviously with good reason.

Half Orc- 18 Dex/ 16 Wis. Similar stats to the human, losing the feats and def for critical severity and to be one of the few non- elf Rangers about.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Go Drow in my opinion... great starting stats and also applies Darkfire fairly often, which is a 10% defence debuff to enemies.

Roll as high as you can in Dex and Wis... Then you only really need to put points into Dex and Wis as you level up too :)

there aren't any real rolls, they are presets that cycle through...keep going til you get 16 in dex and wis, so 18 total after your racial bonus comes into play. I suggest this as it'll give you more crit strike early on...I'm a big proponent of high crit, so that extra 3% is great...

for full disclosure, I respeced from 16/16/12 to 18/13/13 now that I have the gear to keep my crit at 98%.

Thanks for the advice. I hadn't thought of the drow for my ranger. I guess because I immediately think of Drizzt and the many Elven Rangers I see.
I'm sort of now torn between Drow and wood elf now.

It's also good I will be able to respec those stats after I've gotten good gear.

Don't forget Dragonborn is a really good Race for a HR too.... but they are extremely ugly :(

I was Half Orc for the Crit increase. Changing from this did not hurt me much.

The Drow is a great option simply because it drops two in Wisdom. Currently a Drow.

The Dragonborn race is a great option but fee based. It allows you to place your points. When there is a decent discount, I will get this.

Personally, I think the Dragonborn is the way to go for a multitiude of reasons...you can get it for cheap without doing the legendary pack...however the legendary pack does give you a free bag and other goodies for all your toons.... in particular, not only do you get +2 to whatever stats you want (wis/dex), you get 3% CS and Power which is no joke as you get your base power/cs higher...and the 5% incoming healing...think of that as additional healing on lifesteal... other than the fact that helms are broken on the DB and don't show...there really is no downside...

Edit: As @wdj40 points out, you do look ugly as hell...unless you like ugly...which I kinda do :)

    Thanks for the advice.

The Dragonborn look great with their racial bonuses. I'm sure bows would look a little amusing....I imagine it would look like the male Dragonborn is holding a twig with string in its hands :)

So I've delved into a little bit of pvp - my ranger is only level 26 or so and I'm not doing too great. Should I wait til I've unlocked the trapper feats?

After a year in the game for a lot of people, at Lv26 on your 1st playthrough it is not worth even trying to PvP. It will be dominated by people's Alternate Characters etc which will be heavily equipped from hand outs then game time from their main character.

I would suggest doing what I did and maxing out your character with all Boons etc and good equipment. Also high Rank Runes etc... even then PvP will still be very difficult if you are just going in solo with randoms. At any level a random group will face difficulty.

Oh PvP, how I miss it. I enjoyed the runs prior to the introduction of Fey and Neg enchants. I know, same for everyone but I was not in the mindset of getting the latest and greatest and refining to max level in seconds.

I thought iLevel would sort out issues because scaling the equipment attributes to the character level (26) is not perfect.

It's fun when some new character is stuffed with r12 enchants, etc.
