The idea is not exactly ingenious and has probably been put forward already (in that case I apologize for the redundancy) but I think it is a very good idea!
There may be a ton of problems with pvp that should be fixed but this won´t happen if the playerbase is dwindling away. Some solutions - like a more sophisticated queue-system- aren´t even possible without a solid number of players. There´s also little incentive to do more maps etc. for handful of active players so the first step should be to increase the number of players interested in pvp.
I stayed away from pvp before because of all the horrible things I heard about it. But I recently thought it´s a shame because it might actually be fun playing against toons that are (in most cases) piloted by a somewhat higher and more dynamic intelligence than the artificial intelligence of a certain dragon we have all throttled 1000ooo times. So I tried and well, the experience was quite ludicrous. Maybe I was particularly unlucky hitting the uber-premades but meh...no need to explain further.
I don´t think PVE offers a compelling reason to further develop my 3 toons beyond a certain threshold (in my case 2.5k IL, just missing some campaign boons, rank 12 guild boons, no mount insignia bonuses - wth would I even need those? etc.)
So pvp -might- be a fun challenge if only it weren´t such an exercise in futility.
So the idea is to make an event (lasting one or two weeks) during which an additional pvp option is offered. A match where:
- ALL enchantments are set to rank 7 (including armor and weapon enchantments)
- all guild boons disabled
- all mount boons disabled
- all wards (drain) disabled
- tenacity set to fixed amount for all?
- not sure about campaign boons - disabling mount and guild boons will already mess up builds, so enchantments will have to be swapped, and even new players will have some of those anyways?
- set up separate leaderboard for the event, maybe with some cosmetic goodies to be gained (the burning crown of pvp-noobie-excellence...:P)
It would provide new players with the opportunity to gather some glory/gear/experience and actually have some fun while they´re at it. I still expect new players to get stomped by experienced and skilled players but it´s different: if you loose -knowing- your team DID have a sporting chance it is actually fun! A challenge to improve and keep trying. If you loose against toons so powerful it might not have made a difference if they had been steered by a mentally challenged (actual) gorilla... well, there´s not much fun in that.
It cannot be a permanent thing (sadly, but for obvious reasons) but if players like it, it could be a recurring event that thickens the pvp playerbase.
And of course the idea screams for further input and elaboration.

make regular 24/7 pvp equalized and frequent pvp events (all gear and nice reward)
everybody happy
This is a mmo the whole point of it is to get the best stuff and use the best stuff, not get the best stuff then not be able to use it.
They just need to look at some of the other leading mmos pvp systems and try to replicate it. Like ilvl matching and a standings system that works and match like ppl against each other, instead of putting page 1 ppl against page 600 ppl.

And one map with equalized gear, no boons, no enchants, no pots, only your 4 pieces of gear + standard weapon fo PVP and that´s it .
Doing PVP below 70 can be quite fun. It´s way more balanced because there is no crazy selfheal from insignia etc. and no silly lolsetbonus and no broken AP gain, no daily spammer ...and 100 things more to name , that doesn´t make NWO-PVP a good experience in PVP.
@strumslinger : awesome, just leave us some underwear, it might distract my delicate elves to see hordes of hairy naked orcs and dwarves :P
As for making equalized pvp permanent...I figured it just wouldn´t be possible considering the economic model they have chosen for the game. I personally would prefer a model where I pay a monthly fee and get content that is more geared towards maximum fun, challenge and variety and less towards grinding and/or inducements to pay at every corner ...it is necessarily HAMSTER things up... but hey, the whole world is screwed up by a completely ridiculous economic system, not just this lil game (ever get angry about that?:)).
The idea of having a recurrent -event- would be sort of a compromise. Because if equalized pvp was a permanent option the non-equalized option would surely soon be even more of a ghost town. So that cash-cow would die and players who have spent countless hours grinding, paid a ton of money (or got lucky using some exploit or played broker at the auction house) would be severely aggravated.
So an event would allow -all- players to have some fun with the pvp option of this game (which would be awesome!)...and maybe keep some at least mildly interested in regular pvp options and keep at least one eye out for those, so if they´d tweak the latter ones over time, incrementally towards a more playable version (lots of ideas have surely been put forward in this regard) then the whole thing might be kept alive.
I really like the current event! I´ll most likely not grind through the progress bar, but I had (and will have) so much fun exploring all the hilarious nonsense they came up with!
So next a fun pvp event please!
I don't mind running opposite High-level Random teams and I believe it would be disincentive to "Lower" their GS to a arbitrary Max.
If you had a way to let teams queue and a way to let solo players queue separately this would be enough
1out oft 20 matches, if..., may be balanced, the rest is stomp, get stomped, camp or ragequit due to some player , who run broken BS im DOM because orherwise they had to contest, wich seems to be an unknown experience in their little world
As my post in a different thread - we gotta find ways to get people to PVP and enjoy doing it. Holding on to super-status isn't going to help anyone. No people to play with = death of the game.
