Difficulty Logging In?

For the past few days the launcher has been giving me grief not being able to connect to the game or simply taking forever to connect. It goes a little faster if I point to EU instead of USA (which is odd because it was a lot faster the other way before), but then every area I enter is incredibly lagged for me. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

    For the past 3 nights, I have been unable to log in at all in our prime time.
    Brisbane time 7pm to 10pm (UTC 9am - 12am)
    I know it is only at this time as I work from home and am able to play during our day.

    Last night the forums also didn't load and I got an error.
    It doesn't affect other games as I can log onto GW2 and LOTRO, so I KNOW it is a NW problem.

    I'm getting pretty sick of not being able to play.

    I am in California (US) and for the past couple of weeks I get to the "character select" screen and it just sits there with a circle (clocking) until I close out and log in again, this sometimes takes 1 to 5 tries until I see my character's and can get in to the game

    I believe I may have gotten to the bottom of it.

    Again last night I was looking at a black screen after trying to get the games started a few times, and my mind wandered to when I tried RIFT for a few months after it was released.
    At the time (circa 2011), people were having issues with traffic shaping on Optus.
    They were traffic shaping ports between the hours of 6pm - 12am that were used for P2P, unfortunately, RIFT was up in that range and the shaping made the game unplayable.

    I thought, why not fire up my trusty VPN and check NW, and what do you know, it started up first time and no lag.

    So I theorize one of 2 things has happened.

    1. Optus have become even more aggressive in their traffic shaping and included ports that NW uses. This must have happened recently as I have only had the issues for about a week

    OR

    2. Cryptic in their mitigation strategy against the idiot who is attacking the games with DDOS, has shifted the ports the game uses into the range that Optus shapes at night.


    Either way, the game worked perfectly for me this morning at 8am with no VPN.

    So my advice to Aussies using Optus is to VPN or change ISP's.

    I have experienced these issues depending on where I've lived. I had weeks were I couldn't hardly connect while I was living in Mexico which basically turned out to be routing issues between my internet provider and crytpics. FYI cryptics provider wouldn't do anything on their side and mine wouldn't either. Switching to the euro proxy helped (yes this meant my connection physically routed through the USA to europe then back to the USA. Similar issue occurred in Guam but I was able to get the internet provider to adjust routes for me.

    @casey0267 for you I would try starting in safe mode. I always have to play in safe mode for the same reason. Tiny circle then game crash, relog and try again. Safe Mode seems to work. With each game crash i put in the bug report "attempting to login without using Safe Mode". I've never heard anything from cryptic regarding this issue

    I have deleted and redownloaded NW at least 4 times the past year-year and a half. Done this because my pc/program freezes up on me when I get to "material files loaded." I try going to support to submit ticket and I ALWAYS get the error message telling me That that web page can't be reached {paraphrased). I started playing NW at the begging of CBT in NA and I REALLY like this game. Can anyone tell me how to get to support and actually submit a ticket. I ran the 'dxdiag' in win tab + r and got back no problems. I DO NOT want to delete again out of frustration. Game on Gamers!

    thank you @putzboy78 I will try that, it's so intermittent that I have gotten use to closing it and reloading and then it usually works (some days 4-5 times lol) :smile:

    Here's something else I've found.... it matters where I leave my character. I have found several places that changing characters routinely lockup the game on loading. Specifically dread ring anywhere near sgt knox and sharandar near the arcane reservoir. Based on this I'm now in the habit of going to my designated safe spot before going changing characters or going to the stronghold. It seems to reduce the crashes a lot. So look for patterns
