Preservation ward may have failed to preserve reagents

Standing in guild SH, trying to refine the azure rank-9 enchant in my off-hand.
Burned through the 10 preservation wards in my inventory, closed the refinement dialog, and went to open one of the pre-removal 5 packs I had bought from the tarm-bar store. Upon re-opening the refinement dialog, it was not showing my reagents. Searching my inventory, I found they were indeed missing. I'm reasonably sure I used a preservation ward during my last attempt, because I noticed it disappearing from the dialog, which prompted me to go open a 5-pack.
So...either the preservation ward failed, or something about closing the dialog after 10 attempts failed consumed my reagents. Neither is the expected consequence. The server has been extremely laggy this evening---I've lagged to a complete stand-still a couple of times---so perhaps its something related to that.
Fortunately (for your sake) it was not one of the "compensation" preservation wards (I used those first). It was one of the tarm-bar store wards that was laying around since the last 2xRP.
I also filed an in-game bug, but it's never quite clear if anyone reads those. (never have I gotten a response in 3 years), so I'm posting here to see if anyone has a similar experience.
