OP can achieve high crit easy, and rock the lostmauth set. It's not too bad, but a GF will still out DPS an OP.

What is it you are looking to do?

If you want to be dps.. roll a GWF. If you want to be a tank later, then your going to have to stick to it.
I personally found paladins to be a tad faster while leveling. But other shave claimed the opposite.

I had the same idea when I started--I liked the idea of being a fighter with sword and shield. But in this game the fighter with a shield is a specific kind of character--who tanks enemies while the heavy fighters do the damage.

Neither Paladin or Guardian Fighter will do enough damage. I eventually traded my Guardian in for a Great Weapon Fighter.

Doing solo stuff my GF has no problem ripping everything a new one in a heartbeat.

ProtAdin = easy mode once you get your AP act together. Will probably/maybe get nerfed soon(TM). Could then be respecced into a jack of all trades (especially including heals) DevotAdin.

GF = more challenging, directional tank. Has some fun features, but I find the gameplay later on somewhat monotonous... (...not that the Pally's would shine, here...)

Overall: Pally is somewhat easier to tank with as you don't have to care for where the ouch comes from. Also easier aggro-binding thanks to plenty of AoE attacks with side benefits like +x00% aggro generation and +x0% of your HP as temp HP. Currently the overall easier-to-play tank - just plainly overpowered, so there might be a nerf ICBM homing in on it. Playstyle solo: You're in the middle of all the reds in the room who think they can kill you - but they cant. Every few seconds you unleash a 360° flamethrower, which will eventually burn all the enemy healthbars away. GF: You pick one opponent after the other to reduce them to sliced monster-meat at a reasonable speed, all the while holding up your shield whenever some big hit gets telegraphed. Keep in mind that it should face to where the ouch comes from. Getting surrounded can get somewhat painful. Plus side: Damage reflection.

They can win, in combat, no doubt. Just slowly. Pally slower.

Conq/Prot hybrid with a GF and as Kain said - win&fun solo and dungeons.

    Pally - nope.

Pallies will never be dps monsters -- they don't even have a stat that increases damage done.

But you can do some stuff to increase your dps.

For one, whether Prot or Devo paragon, use the Justice feat tree. Put points in Flash of Light, Echoes of Light, Purifying Fire, and the capstone Vengeful Judge. You can put points in either Bulwark or Light tree to round out your build. I only put 1 point in Purifying Fire because I wanted to put at least 4 points in Aura Gifts from the Light tree, but it's up to you.

Powers to rank up for dps: Radiant Strike and Oath Strike at-wills; Aura of Courage and Aura of Solitude passives; Smite, Burning Light, Relentless Avenger, Vow of Enmity, Circle of Power encounters; Divine Judgement daily. Take Burning Guidance from Dread Ring boons. If you use an active companion instead of an augment, use Aura of Wisdom or Aura of Vengeance instead of Solitude.

For a typical solo fight of a group of mostly minions and one bigger guy, I use Vow of Enmity on the big guy, Radiant Strike him to put Purifying Fire on everyone, do a charged Burning Light to get another dot going, Smite him, Radiant Strike again, Oath Strike my target until dead. Put Vow on someone else, repeat if needed. Throw in a Divine Judgement at the beginning of the fight if it's up, especially if there are multiple non-minion mobs. Circle of Power instead of Vow is an alternative.
