The possibility of a multi-class player character

I am one of those old geezers who started playing Dungeons and Dragons back in the late 1970's. As the game evolved, the opportunity to create and play a multi-class character came along, such as a Fighter/Thief or a Cleric/Magicuser. The character was required to a be non-Human and to start in one class but could switch to a different class at a later time in the character's development. The character could advance in the new class but would still retain the abilities and final level of the old class.

So, in Neverwinter terms, might it be possible to start (for example) as a Half-Elf Hunter Ranger, reach 10th Level, and then become a level 1 Guardian Fighter? You could continue all the way to level 70 as a Guardian Fighter, but you would always have, in addition, the abilities of a 10th level Hunter Ranger.

this would require remake of the whole game and would be a nightmare to balance

I concur with banaanc, ,D&D requires a DM present to make common sense rules for a small group, Online games do not allow that luxury, chraracters items and content must be made to work on a large scale without human intervention.
The result of this is reducing the number of variables in each equation.

Neverwinter Nights was like that, and it was awesome. tri-classing gave so many possibilities, that despite nwn being an antiquated game, it kept me playing for years.

seens more easy create a "multi class paragon". like a dc paragon for non dcs, a rogue paragon for non rogues... that means, one atwill, one encounter, daily and 3 class features.
