I'm in the middle RA Salvatore's Transitions series currently. Always been a fan of his works.
Ed Greenwood was always a great one too.
For novels, specifically, I've only focused on the Dragonlance and FR series.
Planescape was one of my personal favorite settings altogether. PS Torment was the best game of that series back in the day, in my opinion. I've played them all (Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, etc..).
Currently working on Pillars of Eternity, which, while a great game for sure, still doesn't capture me like those old ones did.
Agreed, PoE is a great game but it does not capture the spirit and immersion of the older games. As a fun fact, I helped Margaret Weis with IT issues and she now follows me on twitter. To say it is a honor is an understatement. Her and Mr. Hickman made up a great deal of my childhood.

Sadly I don't know if Dragonlance is still supported. They get mentions in the rule books but I think it got all but official retirement by WotC.
Forgotten Realms was only first released in 1987 but even then it only really had a few novels until 1990 or so. R. A. Salvatore actually talked about getting his official start as a writer through TSR and wondering what the heck this Forgotten Realms thing was. So yeah I am a bit younger and thus grew up on FR instead of Dragonlance.
Fourth Edition wasn't necessarily bad. The rules were just way too different so I don't think many people cared for it. The changes to the lore were horrible though. People didn't care for the changes to the rules but people despised the lore changes.
Dragonlance got no love after 3.5. There is hopes that new source books will be released for 5 as the only thing 4th got was conversions. Mrs. Weis has made her own rpg gaming company that now produces the Firefly rpg. She said she has no clue if more Dragonlance will be made for D&D.
I read the first novels from Salvatore and Greenwood in the late 80's. Still reading the work from these men now. Excellent authors and gamers. Did you know the Dragonlance chronicles are literally based off a campaign played by Weis and Hickman?

I havent played paper D&D forever. But on PC i have played the Baulders Gate series, Icewind Dale series, I have played the 2nd Pool of Radiance, The NWN series. I still have them all, but doubt they will load on the newest operating systems. HAHA. First ever adventure game i played was on Atari 2600 almost 40 yrs ago. YIKES
I miss the pen and paper days. I used to have 4 dice sets of different colors, the manuals and about a dozen modules myself. My neighborhood i lived in as a kid we had lots of D&D fun. Wish i had the time to get involved again.
Dang i feel old now.. LOL

Six years as a player with AD&D 2nd Ed followed by about four years as the designated DM for a small group of close friends here. Most of them moved away before the early part of 2001 and that was the last time I played any sort of PnP game. It is what got me into role playing in the first place and eventually led to a long standing love affair with Neverwinter Nights (original, I think Obsidian Entertainment is one of the most amateur development studios out there. Their failures, in my opinion, with Knights of the Old Republic 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2 are evidence enough). I played that on a Ravenloft PW for quite a few years until I finally heard about this game. Fiddled a little when it was released on PC but it just didn't stick with me but since getting my Xbox I've been playing pretty solid.
Just started playing pen and paper again. We are currently running a 2nd Ed game with a home brewed Dragonlance/Forgotten realms crossover. It is so much fun! Reading your post darkstarsurvior makes me want to play in Ravenloft. I found that setting quite fun.
As for Neverwinter Nights 2, I enjoyed it but I had a group of friends and we would create, play and "dm" adventures together. Of course the original was still superior out of the box but with all of the mods released for it NWN 2 it became a great game. I am debating on getting into Sword Coast Legends. It looks very interesting. Anyone tried it out?

This Roll20 site is looking better and better the more I look into it. I'm starting to get the urge to jump into a campaign of some sort again.
