There is a slot which says "complete a task and earn the rank 3 result". I tried to craft cloth sleeves which is tailoring level 3 but nothing happened. So how do I open this slot?
What @jimmyhar says is correct. Any of the tasks specifically for creating that require an asset "tool" (like shears) will have multiple ranks that require a higher level of asset to produce with a percentage chance of success. To achieve a rank 3 result you need to have purple assets, the tools not the person.
The profession "person" (for example: Mailsmith) decreases the time it takes to complete the task.
The profession "tool" (example: shears) increases the quality by enabling access the next level (or levels) and giving you a percentage chance to succeed in producing an item of that quality.
So as @jimmyhar says, you will need to fill every slot with a purple asset (tool, not person) to have a 60% chance at a rank 3 result. You may have to try the tasks multiple times to succeed.
Alchemy also has the superb feature that the rare tasks allowing for Rank 3 results start at profession level 3 - so no need to level it up for days on end.
BTW the assets you need are Mithril Mortar/Philosophers' Stone/Crucible, two of which are alchemy-exclusive and hence fairly affordable on the AH. IIRC Crucibles can also be used in Jewelcrafting and thus a bit more expensive. If you want the fastest access to your Rank-3-slot best buy one of each, and a fourth of the cheapest - different potion rare tasks demand different assets in the first slot, the other three are freely selectable. You can also pass them on to your other chars (In-game mail is the only way to accomplish that - not profession assets bank tab!) and in the end sell them again on the AH...
Also, if you ever decide push it on nonetheless, the creation of Unified Elements and Elemental Aggregate at end levels can make you some profit... ...so it's one of the less useless professions, currently.
Alchemy is the way to go. If you only level 3 professions, Alchemy, Jewelcrafting and Leadership (yes, takes several months, but it's worth it) are the ones. I'd also recommend Mailcrafting for the Power kit. I seem to recall Platecrafting has a useful kit too, can't recall. It's actually faster to level 3 crafting skills to get all 9 slots open in order to get all the footman you need for leadership before starting on leadership. But not if you plan to buy all the footman yourself (I've leveled 10 toons to 25 leadership with another 8 on the way - without buying my workers so I've have ample time to experiment)
