Some player control tips

Some of what follows might fall under "too much information", but here are some tips I've learned that might make your NWO gameplay just a tiny bit easier. For me, at least, they do.

1. Mounting/dismounting

Hitting "7" is okay for using your mount, but for me there's a much easier way. If you have a tilt-wheel mouse, you can map it to one of the tilt-wheel buttons.

What is a "tilt-wheel" mouse? Basically, it's a mouse that has two extra buttons. You might not know it, but many mice today actually have 5 buttons! For example, I use a Logitech M525 wireless mouse and, like nearly all Logitech mice, it has a tilt-wheel. If you have a Microsoft mouse (or just about any new-ish mouse), you likely have one too.

Tilt-wheel mice have the standard left and right mouse buttons, and if you push the scroll wheel down, that activates mouse button 3 (the "middle" button). However, they also have two more internal buttons connected to the wheel: pushing the wheel to the left activates mouse button 4 and (you guessed it) pushing it to the right activates mouse button 5. You can use those extra two buttons to make life a *lot* easier.

I have the mount function mapped to mouse button 4. If I want to get on my mount, I just push the wheel to the left. it took a couple of days to get used to, but now it's as natural as breathing.

2. Jumping

You probably know what I'm going to say. Mapping "jump" to mouse button 5 makes life *infinitely* easier, since you can now control your direction, jump, and move with just two hands. To jump, I just push the wheel to the right.

Try it. After a couple of days, you'll wonder how you ever did without it.

3. Going beyond the mouse.

I don't like to play at my desk. In fact, I haven't done that in ages. I play on my laptop, either laying back in the recliner or in bed. It's just that much more comfortable. Unfortunately, it also makes using the keyboard a real chore.

Enter the numeric keypad.

A cheap USB one will do (and in fact I started out with one), but a Bluetooth one will also do just fine. I use the Microsoft Bluetooth numpad, but the best one is always the one that's most comfortable. I go through an AAA battery every couple of months, but that's easily solved with a bulk buy from Amazon.

So what do I map?

a. Up, down, left, right. That's a no-brainer.

b. Tab mapped to the numeric "5" key (in the middle).

c. Interact ("F") mapped to the numeric "+" key (or to the "-" key, depending on the numpad's layout). Basically whichever one feels natural to reach with my index finger. I should point out that I use the numpad with the left hand, since like just about everyone I've got my right hand on the mouse. So, interacting means using my left index finger on either the "+" or "-" key.

d. The encounter keys ("Q", "E", and "R") mapped to numeric keys "7", "9", and "3" respectively. These are the easiest keys around the perimeter to reach while still keeping the movement keys within easy reach.

e. Class-specific key mapped to numeric "1". For my HR, I map a daily key to it so I can get a rapid-fire Disruptive Shot off. For my GF, I use it to mark a target (using numeric "5" for the guard stance). I haven't had to use it for any other class so far.

For (b) through (e), I trained myself on only one change at a time from the standard layout. I found that making a wholesale change just made things confusing, but a few days with a change here, a few days with a change there made it manageable. Now it feels perfectly natural. For me the next step will probably be working out a numeric key for the artifact "3" key, so I can fire an artifact off while still maintaining my character's facing with the mouse. One change at a time.

These tips certainly won't be for everyone, but -- for the mouse ones especially -- I find that they make life a whole lot easier.

For the more snazzy "numeric" keyboard google "Razer Tartarus"...

...also with a coolie hat on the thumb, spacebar below, and an Alt key above. Only bad thing is the long action of the keys, takes a bit of adaption when a laptop keyboard is the reference method. Also, the palmrest, while adjustable, could use more adjustment for larger hands. But this can be easily corrected with some padding...
