Returning player; What do I have to know?

pienorpienor Member, NW M9 Playtest Posts: 11 Arc User
Hey everyone,

Took a little break from the game when I became bored a while back (I think it was around, when they patched Refinement materials to be soulbound/non sellable anymore? Not sure.), looking to return to the game now - I'm having a hard time finding changes/patch notes since then though. I did find out that there's a new class and level cap was increased, but other than that, not much really. Can anyone give me a quick recap on changes?
Also, how are the classes now? Are CWs still 'master of all and everything' (i.E highest dps, CC, etc.)? What's the current "go to" DPS class? How's the new class (Paladin?)?

If anyone could give me a little recap or point me into the right direction, that would be awesome! :)

Refinement can now easily be farmed (not bound) from heroic instances, IWD is a popular choice.

The dragon hoard has been nerfed into non-existence. It is completely worthless now, the Dragon Hoard enchantment works for 1 hour then basically stops.

There is no new class atm

Since you left, quests give less experience then they used to, but you need more to level up now... alot more

The classes are balanced so far with the exception to the god paladin (we all predicted it), the paladin is nice in pve though.

CW's are in the best balanced state ive seen since I started playing in my opinion (Mod 2). Might be because all the really good ones might have left the game though.

Like I said, the paladin is something else, it will only die from alot of force 7v1 or some insane burst damage ie GWF indomitable strike.

Considering paladins weren't ingame when I left, they are new to me. :p

So, leveling is alot slower now? It was already pretty boring to get to max level before I left. Definitely wanna try out a Paladin though, since I had all classes back then, and a new one is always interesting, heh. :)
Thanks for your answers so far.

61-70 is insane now.. and overleveling at 70 is.. well don't even bother trying.. unless you want to play 8-10 hours a day.. non-stop..

The dragon hoards are one example (if you just made them bind char or account why nerf the HAMSTER out of them?? ) or the xp/difficulty curve.. post 60 the mobs (around 65 or so) began to 1 shot you unless you were a tank, so how did they fix it? by giving the mobs 50% more hp and lowering damage on them by 25%.... *rubs temples* which did 2 things.. made it so it is a 1.5 shot not 1 shot.. and now it takes 50% longer to kill them so.. lots and lots and lots more chance to get 1.5 shotted...

PvP.. uhh what pvp.. it is full of 2 things 1 premade groups who absolutely dominate, and 2 tr(s) that hop the wall and sit on 1 of the control points where you can't kill them, just to get enough points to get 6 (or sometimes 12) token from the PvP league event.. there is a 3rd group which is about 15% which is a FUN match.. rest.. well it is about as much fun as slamming your hand in the car door..

the events they have.. mixed bag here.. the "call to arms" are good still, you can get prizes from them without grinding INSANELY, but out of the 3 other non call to arms events.. the birthday celebration was great, but the gond and lilira celebrations have been "hey want prizes! grind 15 hours a day! or... for the easy price of XXXXX zen you can just buy the tokens you need!" what ends up happening is due to botters the market crashes and it becomes cheaper to buy the items you need from the AH than from the zen store *rofl*

not saying the game isn't FUN still.. just gotta ignore PvP.. don't freak out that you can't get ANYTHING during events, and realize that leveling post 60 is a nightmare of grinding to death (no new quest lines.. just lots of repeatable quests in 4 or 5 new zones..).. me personally i am still having fun doing my daily campaign quests each day, and maybe pvp(if i get lucky and find a fun match).. also doing some epic level content (with about 2300 gearscore/gearlevel you can finally survive everything except the boss fights)

so.. if you ignore the HAMSTER the game is great still :)

Totally not interested in pvp, I never liked in in NWO so I kept away from it anyways. Compared to pre-patch, where it took like what 3-4 days(?) to get to 60, how is that now?
What's "overleveling"? How long does it take to get from 60 to 70?

level to 60 is still normal, it is just 61-70 that is longer.. overleveling is where at (wsa level 60, but now 70) you gain a set amount of XP and level and get an extra power point.. which at 60 was no biggie it just let you buy some more skills to switch out if you wanted.. but NOW it matters all skills can go to 4 points into them and you only get like 1 point at level 70 to get a skill to 4points in it.. so you have to "overlevel" at 70 to get the skills you want to 4 points each..

    oh yeah PS...
the only thing you may really miss and that blows my mind, is the dungeons.. they removed ALL but 3 of the "regular" dungeons, and turned those 3, into 3 man runs instead of 5.. and all we have been told is the others will come "later" and that there will also be 5 man versions of them all again too...??? (worried they got one poor guy working on all of them 24/7 non-stop :) )

Most important thing: Your old gear is all HAMSTER. Period. it's HAMSTER, doesn't matter what sort of pre-m6 gear you had, it's not worth any more than you can get for salvage. Replace it with new gear, even GREEN stuff, that gives hit points - it will be better than any old T2 gear.

PvP, believe it or not, is easier to get T2 gear from than PvE. At lvl 60, farm GG wearing Silvery in your Utility slots. The T2 PvP gear (Burning set) is easily "good enough" for any PvE runs in the game and essential for doing PvP at even a remotely competitive stage. Don't forget to pick up the victory daily at Trade of Blades for the seals of triumph.

oh yeah.. forgot about the crazy no hp curve post 60.. that is true.. once you are getting green or blue level 60 + items don't worry about your old level 60 gear (unless it was an artifact then i think it can be upgraded can't it??

Thanks for the answers, I'm not going to care much about my CW, just gonna start over with a Paladin for now, to get back into the game I guess.
Also; Great to see you still playing Sekh; I was a (grey-)cloak back when I still actively played, hah. :)

Edit: Oh, and all the "old" lvl 60 content, has that all just moved to lvl 70 stuff? Like Sharandar, Dread-whatever it was called(?), etc.?

Yes, Sharandar, Dread Ring, Icewind Dale, and Well of Dragons are all level 70 now. Also the lair quests for Tyranny of Dragons campaign are level 70. You can pick up the quests or go to any of those zones, and it "uplevels" you to level 70, however your level 60 gear will not be enough and you will be 1-shot by a small minion and wonder WTF happened, lol.

Nope. Some of the pre-m6 arifacts are still viable but not the main/offhands. Level to 70 and finish Spinward rise you get lvl 70 artifact mainhand and offhand free that way (once from each thing). Use your old mainhand art to refine the new mainhand and old offhand for the new one - only use for the old artifacts. You can't "upgrade" the old lvl 60 artifacts per se. They were not changed - it just so happens they are still somewhat viable, though their stats are sort of on the lower end - you'll need to replace them with "Greater" versions eventually.

    You should know that:

    1. Making any new character will take ages to level and get bonus power points, so dont even bother, cause you'll regret it (unless you're very rich and dont mind spending 10-15k ZEN on XP booster every month).
    2. Most classes got nerfed while mobs got +50% HP boost, prepare for mindless and boring daily pve.
    3. Most old dungeons is gone and many new ones is often unplayable due to lags.
    4. Mod 6 for many is just a total failure, a true nightmare for casual players.

Don't upgrade any artifacts with legendary versions until they are at least epic quality.
Funny how so many people have the same opinions of mod 6 but the devs havent done anything positive to balance it out.

The playerbase became pessimistic af, especially the ones in the forums. I'm not saying that they're wrong, i'm saying that they are exaggerating it.

mod 6 is about on par with mod 4 with me.. but they did some rather wacky things, like really 100% against player feedback, like current experience debacle, which just feeds the frenzy.

The game is ok.. its not great, its not as good as it was once, they have added so much grind, you cant play multiple toons anymore, which is crazy bad.. every other game company wants you to have 2-3 alts to play, because typically those people will spend money on each.

    Also,
you cant really grind your own RP for artifact gear (or you can, but it takes approx over 300 hours to do so (I made a thread explaining the math on it) so its not good.

RP for enchants and artifacts though, is very cheap, so you may want to get those to legendary at least right now.

Heh, that's how mmo(rpg) forums usually are from what I've seen so far (and I have played MANY mmos).
Anyways - thanks for all the answers so far, almost lvl 70 with my Paladin so far and still having fun so it's all fine for now. :p

    [Removed moderated quote.]

NWO Uncensored is okay for the blog. As for an alternate forum: http://pc.reddit.com/r/Neverwinter eliminates most of the X-Boxer stuff to make it easier to read and follow and is open (not a privately-controlled/owned system the way NWO Uncensored is.) I'm seeing about equal activity on that subreddit and here in the official forums. Though the rules are bit more relaxed at the reddit site and so the better-experienced players are hanging out there more often.

If you want everything including the X-Boxer comments just remove the "pc." from the URL.

Yeah, thanks for the links - I thought the fastest way to get an answer is probably the officials, and it was pretty much. :p Will switch back to reddit, etc. for further questions though.
