You actually just helped make the author's point. During the time you're referring to, Cryptic still owned CoH. They pulled most of the Dev team to work on what later became CO. It's perfectly reasonable that not every character can be powerful in all aspects of the game. But to say that not every character can even participate in an event due to that event's design is taking that concept to an unwise extreme in my opinion.

My most desired things right now: 1) Fix the teleport bug. Please, for the love of all that's holy, fix the teleport bug already. 2) Costume auras in the tailor. 3) A new AP or comic series. Either one would make me happy. As long as it has nothing whatsoever to do with Qliphoth. :)

If you're gold or have a freeform slot, you can easily do a pet build. There are tons of pets in CO and it's more than possible to have a character that pretty handily simulates a mastermind.
