Is it me or is it impossible to make a Variable Robot costume for Mastodon.
I am glad I did not buy the Tank yet.
Can the designers do a side by side comparison between the available vehicles and Variable Robot costumes (Both male and female) and see what costumes just scream the vehicle they are to look like.
(No Chest/Back piece looks like Mastodon windshield)
Have to prep for some meetings all day, but quick note: While I understand some parts of the sentiment, I disagree with the idea that we're not open to feedback. If it's helpful, below are some specific fields that we're looking or information on. We're devotees as well -- I made a big ol' list of feedback when it was on the QA shard, and the artist is already working on a number of the things I mentioned -- but you guys are always going to have the creativity and craziness to find new things we missed.
We're specifically looking for the following -- these are changes that are (generally) in scope.
-Clipping (some of this is known issues).
-Category issues (things like the tights and the chest layer being in different categories).
-Category expansions that would allow interesting costume choices, without causing much clipping.
-Male/Female piece discrepancies.
-Channel changes? At least, I assume that these are within scope, I don't really know.

Why do we care about clipping? If something clips, let the players have the intelligence to say "okay yeah, not using that together". Surely the servers aren't so unstable that too many clipped polygons would crash it, right?
More options are better.
Also, can someone please let us know why we're not offered cloth and leather with this, at the very least?

I take it, then, since CO is open to feedback, that we'll be seeing cloth/leather/metal as options, despite the OP? This is certainly one of the major areas of feedback and not fixing it after all the feed back will come off as disingenuous.

Because it is very clear due to the past couple of costumes released that it didn't matter what we said, they were still going to be released unfinished or at least in poor quality. This has been the norm in the PTS for years. People far more intelligent than I point out obvious flaws and the get ignored. Can you really blame people for assuming the worst?
I constantly believe that the Devs will fix what people point out, though it often leaves me looking like a fool.
You guys have fixed some things after being given feedback, sure. However, a few big reasons why I don't really tend to believe you?
Vikorin shoulderpads are still bugged for females. They have been SINCE RELEASE.
Victorian dress's 3rd color is still missing after disappearing randomly.
And now the arcane tattoo face is gone from females' normal heads with hair.
These have been brought up many times, with no response from ANYONE.
Why should we believe feedback helps when this has been going on for years?

Yup, pretty much.
Agreed.
Perhaps the new folks that are designing this set could speak to the last team from Cryptic North for just half an hour. They could learn a few things about what is expected of costume sets and the basic standards that have been set.
Can parts of the actual vehicles available in game be used for costume parts or basis for costume parts?
Also Meedatchunist said his tights were to have integrated plates (not another ribbed tights pattern). The cyberpunk set does this so I hope the VR tights get a similar redo.
Possible Bug
I use the same colors for Cyberpunk torso and legs but the skin tight part of the legs are different that the same color used for the skin tight part of the torso and I am using the same material (Metal) But when I use Leather the color matches (I miss the metallic shine)
These have been brought up many times, with no response from ANYONE.

It's worth noting that we have some time specifically budgeted for bug-fixing the VarRob. (Not a ton, so we're limited in scope, but there is time budgeted.) The pieces you mentioned are waiting for a future bug pass. That said, we should definitely make sure those make it into the next bug pass.

I don't entirely agree that it's disingenuous. While I understand the sentiment behind the materials, we've been up-front about the plan since before it even hit PTS. It's worth noting that, while feedback is a major consideration, it's not the only thing we take into accounaccount.
However, as I noted earlier, the colors vary depending on material. "Black", for example, is black on cloth; it's black with shiny highlights on leather; and it's a sort of reflective dark gray on metal - not the same thing at all. Other colors vary similarly.
If there's a practical consideration here, I'd love to hear it. If it's just a matter of "robots are metal", though, well, I think we can decide for ourselves what metal looks like, don't you?
"Science teaches us to expect -- demand -- more than just eerie mysteries. What use is a puzzle that can't be solved? Patience is fine, but I'm not going to stop asking the universe to make sense!"
Hmm, can you point out the pre-PTS post where it says this set will only be one material (i.e. one before the beginning of this thread)? I'm just curious to see how far back this is.
It just seems like having this set in the 3 standard materials should be far easier to fix than some of the other issues and would make lots and lots of customers happy.
At least you partially agree that it's disingenuous

And just like the Action Figure we were promised in December for donating to Extra-Life, materials are easy to add.

And the feedback you're getting here indicates that the Variable Robot set needs a significant amount of work - mere bug-fixing (within the limited scope you've described) isn't going to get it up to the level of quality it should be at.
Which is why I suggested re-thinking the packaging of it; if it were slated to be released as multiple sets, then you could (hopefully) justify to your commercial overlords actually taking the time to get it right, instead of releasing it with just some category and clipping fixes.

Well, I would love if this turns out to be true, but considering it's been years for some parts, you'll forgive me if I don't really hold my breath. Thanks for responding to it, though - and I realize you're not to hold accountable for any of this, being a community manager and all. That being said, passing this along to the people responsible for bugfixing costume pieces would be amazing. Thank you.
When you needed to hit a home run, this set is kind of a dud. the modeling is not up to par with other sets and it isn't loyal to the submission at all.
And just like the Action Figure we were promised in December for donating to Extra-Life, materials are easy to add.
Making AFs are easy - I cobbled one together in about 30 minutes thanks to a great forum member here. And yet we still don't have that. STO got the middle finger with their rewards, too.
There is a difference between listening to feedback and acting on it.
It'd be super if people stuck to complaining about the new costume set instead of bringing up how CO is the disappointing child and every single time they've failed at everything ever.
Variable Robot is coming soon? I hope that's a Blizzard Soon, because it looks like it's still months away from being finished. With all the terrible ideas where to place the pieces (seriously, arm pieces in "arms", not arm accessories/bracers? leg armour/boots only in robotic legs?), no material alternatives, only one face (which honestly looks pretty bad, it looks like the face has been punched in), no weapon arms I could see, pieces being stuck in left and right options, not the "both" category, and most importantly, you only bothered to cover one of the outfits. Seriously? What if I don't wanna be a plane robot?

The only discussion I recall regarding material usage was our bringing it up as an issue with the last costume piece, and your saying that it was too late to be fixed with that item, but that this issue would be addressed with future costume pieces.
Apparently the extent to which you're willing to address the issue is adding a disclaimer to the start of this thread that you don't care about the issue in question, this in spite of the creator of the costume set telling you that it was part of his vision for the set and asking you to not under any circumstances release it in its current state, largely I think because of this specific issue.
It'd be super if people stuck to complaining about the new costume set instead of bringing up how CO is the disappointing child and every single time they've failed at everything ever.
It fits a pattern, though. CO only gets 10% of the artists' time, and based on what's been shipped recently, CO only appears to get 10% of Cryptic's ****s. It looks like somebody, somewhere in the development chain, has adopted a "Who cares? It's only CO." attitude. Whether that's true or not, that's what the finished products suggest.

Thanks for the feedback ya'll, especially those of you who kept it constructive. That's the kind of feedback we're most interested in. Thanks to some creative scheduling, we're going to squeeze some time in to make the following changes:
- Address the mirrorgeo issue.
- Address the missing categories & Male/Female discrepancies.
- Add More Materials (Just Leather & Cloth in addition to the current Metal option).
- There was some debate about this one since most Robot costumes don't have a non-metal option, but we decided to make the time for it so players can have a matte option.
Keep that feedback coming, and keep it constructive.

Thank you very much for that, Lady!!
Just one question... Would be possible to do the blade/cannon bracer with it? Imo, it would be a major selling point to this set!

Great start. Apologies if things aren't always kept constructive, but...well, honestly, these people aren't children, and this isn't a self-help site. They should have been able to take a look at the concept art and tell for themselves that no, this is NOT what they were given to work with.
Thanks to them for including other materials, in any case.

So I think this needs to be addressed. Please throw out all previous rules of what you believe costumes should adhere to, Cryptic North spoiled us.
While old costumes may have gaps with their material options, new ones should not. Cloth, Metal and Leather are bare minimum.
Telling us that a costume isn't available under a category because of clipping (or any reason really) isn't going to convince too many people when we currently have a ton of costumes that allow us that kind of freedom. Players like options, this game's main sell is customization, clipping is not much of a concern. Include costumes in more categories.

*Edit meant to say "non-metal option" :P.
And, uh... when are you gonna do the rest of it? About a third of the design has been completed. What about the additional helmet, head, back items, heavy armour, camo pattern, weapon arms, pistol and sword, the plated tights as they are actually depicted (Rather than the shoddy 5 minute job of taking some default tights and copypasting some bands on)?
As of currently, there is little to nothing for me to be excited for without any of these. I will not be buying this set.

Thank you for the material options and clipping fixes
Any word on possible additional parts to more closely resemble the parts to the other vehicles? Broader windshields (tanks), different wings/thrusters Different weapon bracers/gloves?
I want to buy the set. I want to buy a tank. But as is. I am not likely to spend anything either.
This costume set actually compelled me to come onto the forums to say something about it instead of lurking like I have been for the past two years or so. My rage cannot be properly put into a forum post. This costume set is the most rushed, laziest, cobbled-together garbage that I have seen in the entire time I've been here. The shoulders on the female model float about a foot away from where they should be. The chest layer on the female model is exactly the same as that of the male. The tights are just a worse version of some tights that we already have. The hands are the absolute laziest attempt that I have seen at a costume piece in a long time. The categories for the parts are severely limited and so the uses for the parts are severely limited.
If this lack of quality is what we can expect from you in the future, give us back to Cryptic North. We don't want the "A" team.

Now for some feedback:
It's unsettling that we are actively being asked to voice which costume categories we want these pieces to be available in. Up until now, we have been confident that all post-lockbox era set have been made available in the maximum possible number of costume piece categories without being asked.
It is also alarming that this set is using only Metal textures without the option for Cloth or Leather. I thought those days were behind us years ago.
BUGS:
It should also be noted that the geometry on the Chest Piece is completely broken. Again, and again costume pieces are being made as if the designer is oblivious to the fact that players can and do adjust the body proportions. (See: the similarly and still broken Alien Gladiator, Socrates and Sharkfin chest pieces)
The chest piece is not symmetrical. For example, the left side of the shoulder strap juts forward, while the right side angles backward.
As it stands, I won't be buying this set, and I will show this thread to anyone that is considering buying it so they know what they're in for. I suggest:
- Making all pieces available in as many categories as exist. Many of the pieces can't even be used with each other. Players want versatility to create things outside of what was imagined for this set.
- Fixing the clipping and asymmetry. It's confusing that this has to be said. Please test these things with the body sliders.
- Add Cloth and Leather textures. Everybody hates a costume piece that can only be one texture. Remember all those old legacy crafted pieces that were metal only? If you have a costume with every single piece as matte black and a fancy hologram aura, you're barred from using any piece in this set because they are metal only.
First, ultrarankgrunt gives us an example of completely useless "feedback".
Then voyagersix provides an exemplar of what the feedback is supposed to be - pointing out the flaws in the design, complete with pictures to illustrate. Thank you.
And thank you, LadyGadfly and Trailturtle, for making sure the material complaints were heard. Holo, psi-holo, and glass would have been inappropriate for the concept of "transforming robot", but not all robots are gleaming polished steel, you know? Cloth and leather make sense, if only to make certain the colors are right.

Looks like this chest layer needs not only to be re-weighted to sliders, but also unwrapped again.

I agree I went early this morning to see up on the new set, put them on my Destroid and I noticed that the shoulder pads/wings were clipping or rather that the shoulder pads were too far back when compared to the actual shoulder distance of my destroid.
In other news, there has been some talk that the omnipresent trashcans surrounding the tailor have, at long last, been reined in.
I am sad to report that this is not the case.
I have no idea if this was something actively being worked on. If not, please carry on. d('-' )
UPDATE: Weiiiiiiiiird. On live, the trashcan behaviour has been fixed. I'm afraid this version of the PTS has regressed those wonderful changes.
UPDATE2: Okay, well, I take that back. Standing at 5698 200 -1302 in Millennium City on live, the trash cans are as large and in charge as ever so I'm just going to presume the fix was a folk tale and move on. Look forward to updates!
I know that for over 2 years [at least] I've been begging for all the costume parts to have a metal/leather/cloth option.
Word of advice: Do not presume that we want something a certain way because of other parts. Do not assume that mild clipping is a problem. Do not think that we share a preference for things that even 'make sense' when it comes to costumes. This is a creative player base that can produce combinations that will outright blow your mind. Don't believe me? Ask Mutantmaids, and she'll show you some things you never thought possible in this game and will blow your mind.
The fact that you don't know this after all the years this game has been around bothers me, and tells me that you aren't paying attention to your players.
*Edit meant to say "non-metal option" :P.
Thank you.
"- Address the missing categories & Male/Female discrepancies."
does this mean you will look to make the arms and legs in the "both" category?
and honestly, if the above is all you plan to work on, I would hold off on the release until the category issue for all costume parts is taken cared of.
There are two kinds of clipping and one of them is entirely acceptable.
The first is that clipping where the costume piece doesn't work with the body by itself or with the pieces that go in the same set. That kind of clipping does need to be addressed.
The second is where the costume piece clips through costume pieces that aren't part of the same set. This is actually very acceptable since they weren't designed to go with but can create interesting combinations.
When it comes to costume pieces, we want them to go into every category that they make sense in despite clipping with other pieces in other categories. We want all gloves to go in both short and long glove. We want to use bracers with both short and long glove. We want to use belts with hip wear, skirts, dresses, pants, and every lower body category. We want chest wear with every torso type, jackets with everything, and chest wear with jackets. We want to see head wear and hair allowed in every head category including helmets, big helmets etc.
We don't want to see a category disappear because of a choice made on another part of the body or even when a choice is made on that part of the body.
I know that for over 2 years [at least] I've been begging for all the costume parts to have a metal/leather/cloth option.
Word of advice: Do not presume that we want something a certain way because of other parts. Do not think that we share a preference for things that even 'make sense' when it comes to costumes.
The fact that you don't know this after all the years this game has been around bothers me, and tells me that you aren't paying attention to your players.
I have to agree on this sentiment.
It can safely be assumed that every individual costume piece will be used outside of its original set and mixed with everything else. Don't assume because one robot piece has been incorrectly restricted to Metal texture only that we want consistency in that unwanted restriction. At the bare minimum, we want all costume pieces (even those existing since the game's inception) to have Cloth, Leather, and Metal textures. Many still don't.
By limiting categories, textures, genders, etc, you reduce the costume's value to us and sell yourselves short.
The game's legacy costume pieces have barely any clipping issues no matter the extremes of body slider settings used. Why is this an issue every time a new costume is released? Isn't clipping the most reported issue with every new costume set? What is happening that causes sets to consistently be released in this state?
Guess what the most common complaints will be when the next yet-to-be-announced lockbox set happens? These are important issues that buyers weigh before deciding to purchase a costume set, and a negative experience will affect whether they buy future sets since trust is lost.

Commandments to avoid Costume Design Sins.
The Right Kind of Clipping. Model each costume piece individually in the main categories to expose unwanted clipping. Setting the body to a bright colour helps. A costume piece must work with all body proportions. It must not clip when the character's limbs are animated, such as in flight. It's expected and forgivable that unconventional category combinations will clip (ie: skirts paired with hip gear or leg accessories). It's not expected or desired that conventional combinations clip: Tights with Chestpieces. See crypticbuxom's post for a better explanation:
There are two kinds of clipping and one of them is entirely acceptable.
The first is that clipping where the costume piece doesn't work with the body by itself or with the pieces that go in the same set. That kind of clipping does need to be addressed.
The second is where the costume piece clips through costume pieces that aren't part of the same set. This is actually very acceptable since they weren't designed to go with but can create interesting combinations.
Have Textures. Cloth, Leather, and Metal categories are the bare minimum, but don't stop there. Add imperfections and fine details. The Scientist set was largely hated because it has no defining texture quality at all.
No Baked-In Colours. A police hat should not force the decorations to be gold.
No Colour Bleeding. If the first three colours are white, and the fourth is red, red should not taint any of the other three.
Have Seamless Textures.
Be Consistent. If one piece in a set has glass as a transparency option, all similar pieces must have glass as a transparency option or they will not match when used together. If a chestpiece in a set has a glow option, all pieces in that set must have the same glow option, or they will not match when used together.
Have Symmetry. One shoulder pad must not be lined up crooked while the other is straight.
Make It Unisex. Always. The glass slipper was a great example of doing it right.
Choose Colours Wisely. Examples: The iron bull mask: It could potentially have glowing eyes, but the nose has been made to glow as well. With four colours available, this could have been avoided. The new Defender helm: It could have had separate glowing eyes and helm decorations, but these two are tied together. With four colours available, this should have been avoided.
Have Unrestricted Categories. Most of the lockbox sets are coveted partly for this reason: The pieces in them can be used outside of conventional categories for some very versatile effects. The dual-belt from the Space Scoundrel set could have been made available to all the belts, but it was unfortunately restricted to just one belt. It doesn't matter if you think it won't look good, the players will love having the option and will find a way to use it creatively.
This isn't a set that appeals to me since I have no interest in making a Transformer-like toon, but I can imagine that it would be one of the more challenging sets to make considering the detail of every single piece having to adhere closely to each part of the vehicle making up each body part in "robot" form.
The symmetry and clipping definitely needs to be fixed. Other than that it looks to be coming out decent, but I'm hoping that the flat textures in the pics that voyagersix has posted won't be the only option available and that there would be a couple detail options included.
as a long time player i have accumulated every costume in the game, i usually am excited about new sets. there are many others that have most of everything now. you need to keep that in mind when designing costumes.
I find myself now not wanting every costume in the game, and not really wanting to play so much now. when good costume sets came out in the past it was the opposite, I wanted to redesign characters and possible make new ones to use the set. but this one is kind of half done.
btw i am normally an optimist, but the glass is looking more empty now.
Just give me the 3d files and ill fix them myself.(actually my degree is in 3d animation)

No no no no. Well, unless they offer it without the vehicle, then sure
I cannot stress this enough.
@Chimerafreek
I am glad I did not buy the Tank yet.
Can the designers do a side by side comparison between the available vehicles and Variable Robot costumes (Both male and female) and see what costumes just scream the vehicle they are to look like.
(No Chest/Back piece looks like Mastodon windshield)

Because it is very clear due to the past couple of costumes released that it didn't matter what we said, they were still going to be released unfinished or at least in poor quality. This has been the norm in the PTS for years. People far more intelligent than I point out obvious flaws and the get ignored. Can you really blame people for assuming the worst?
I constantly believe that the Devs will fix what people point out, though it often leaves me looking like a fool.

If there's a practical consideration here, I'd love to hear it. If it's just a matter of "robots are metal", though, well, I think we can decide for ourselves what metal looks like, don't you?

Thank you.
Making AFs are easy - I cobbled one together in about 30 minutes thanks to a great forum member here. And yet we still don't have that. STO got the middle finger with their rewards, too.
Really, really, REALLY sad.
I pray Cryptic doesn't do Extra-Life this year.

It'd be super if people stuck to complaining about the new costume set instead of bringing up how CO is the disappointing child and every single time they've failed at everything ever.

They're not there in the beginning, but when your story ends / Gonna last with you longer than your friends
- Address the mirrorgeo issue.
- Address the missing categories & Male/Female discrepancies.

Keep that feedback coming, and keep it constructive.

Thank you very much for that, Lady!!
Just one question... Would be possible to do the blade/cannon bracer with it? Imo, it would be a major selling point to this set!
I appreciate this greatly. Thank you very much.

Concerning clipping and category selections...this is a perfectly legal costume: http://www.jackalgallery.com/co_images/err.jpg
Telling us that a costume isn't available under a category because of clipping (or any reason really) isn't going to convince too many people when we currently have a ton of costumes that allow us that kind of freedom. Players like options, this game's main sell is customization, clipping is not much of a concern. Include costumes in more categories.
Thanks!
And, uh... when are you gonna do the rest of it? About a third of the design has been completed. What about the additional helmet, head, back items, heavy armour, camo pattern, weapon arms, pistol and sword, the plated tights as they are actually depicted (Rather than the shoddy 5 minute job of taking some default tights and copypasting some bands on)?
As of currently, there is little to nothing for me to be excited for without any of these. I will not be buying this set.

Any word on possible additional parts to more closely resemble the parts to the other vehicles? Broader windshields (tanks), different wings/thrusters Different weapon bracers/gloves?
I want to buy the set. I want to buy a tank. But as is. I am not likely to spend anything either.

You can even point to it on Arc preview image.
They were basically clipping into the wings.
A matte material would be sweet, too.
Whoever you are, be that person one hundred percent. Don't compromise on your identity.
