Anniversary Leveling Contest

You know Champs inside and out, hero, so now's the time to prove it. Every time you level up a character to 40, you're qualifying towards a $250 Amazon gift card or a custom piece of Champs art.

This leveling contest will start later tonight, at 12:01 AM on August 29 (Pacific), and ends 9 AM on Thursday, September 6. Level a character up to Level 40 and you'll get an entry into the contest. We'll do a drawing after the event ends to randomly determine the winner.

If you've got time afterwards, you can try to get another character up to 40. Please don't delete any entered characters, and since it's a leveling contest, only characters created during the event will count.

If you're a diehard Champs fan, the second prize option may be more up your alley. You've seen some of the amazing art in Champs, and with this prize, your character can feature in one. Or maybe you've got a favorite character from the Champs universe who doesn't have awesome concept art? We're open to your suggestions when you win -- frankly, we're curious where you'll take it! Please remember that art is a fickle thing, but we'll try to get you exactly what you want.

In addition, everyone who qualifies will get a special title, 'The Ascendant', plus a stack of MODs and a Catalyst pack.

(Official, fine-print rules here.)

I think the idea of the contest is fine and dandy. A $250 Amazon gift card is a pretty sweet prize.

Although I'm puzzled as to how a player who gets from level 6 to 40 by doing nothing but Smash alerts will know the game "inside and out".

With that said, prepare for the sudden surge of level 6's in Smash alerts.

I'm guessing the The Ascendant title is only applied to that character?

Sounds like I'll have to make a character I'll play with for quite a while to come...

NVM..... I have to create a character during this event.....

I dont think you should be making a contest over the fact you can lvl from 1-40 in under 6 days, in fact its pretty shamefull if you ask me you can level to maximum so fast!

Thanks for the contest! I've never levelled a character that quickly (OMG! What a noob, rite!? :D) But I may just have to give this a go.

Id rather they bothered fixing the dozens of bugs that they have ignored for months, or the 80+ bugs detailed in the thread below that they introduced with the last patch (that they once removed to fix them first - which they completely failed to do)

If you've leveled from creation to 40 in 14 hours, you haven't "completed" the game; one could argue you haven't played it at all. All you've done is run one Alert after another for 14 hours (which, given the XP ones take two minutes max, sounds even more boring than leveling one's nth alt through Westside to me - you can be done with Westside in an hour or two...).

Yes, I'm thankful for the most probable surge of fresh level 6's leeching off smash alerts once news of the contest become more widespread (noticed they haven't added an announcement to the front page yet).

What's with all the complaining about how people go about reaching 40? I don't recall reading anything in Trialturtle's post saying that those that do it the quickest have a better shot at the gift card than those that do it more slowly.

If you're one of those types that can manage to create and level two or more characters to 40 in the span of a week then good on ya. It's not like the majority of this game's player population fits into that category anyway.

So, with this "contest" going on, it's probably safe to say we won't be having a "Double-XP" buff offered to us for the Anniversary event.

Bummer. I was hoping for some Double XP to move along some of my lower level alts.

And of course I'm responsible for that, how could I right? Let's not go there OK. Don't act as if I implemented that system. I have made enough posts about leeches in alerts so don't you try to insinuate that I'm supporting it. The point was that spewing venom now is pointless. Not like they will cancel the event.

I'm going to have a go, I'm not very fast at levelling though. I agree with Jonsills, it would be really boring to level through Alerts.

As it happens , I've spent about 4 or 5 hours and only been in a grand total of three alerts, at level 18 now. And quite sleepy.

    1. only characters created during the event will count...
    2. In addition to the grand prize, you'll also be able to pick up some guaranteed unlocks for reaching 40.
    3. Everyone who qualifies will get a special title, "The Ascendant", plus a stack of MODs and a Catalyst pack.
    4. (Official, fine-print rules here.)
    1. I've got a pack of 30's i'd love to enter TYVM
    2. Are the "guarenteed unlocks" covered under #3? Or are they different?
    3. A "stack" of mods? Or a STACK of mods? (i believe they stack to 250 don't they?)
    4. I don't see the prizes for #2 & #3 under the rules (is that an omission? Or are you donating out of pocket? )

So, no "invasion of the destroids". No "undead heroes" visitations. No "Qular" invasion.
    Nothing "Dev" involved.

Just a "who can get to level 40 first contest"?

Took a look at the rules, finally. Given the eligibility period, and the fact that you have to create your character during the event (starting today), that would require me to either level entirely through alerts, or engage in some serious poopsocking - and either way, I'd have to entirely ignore my family and other responsibilities (for instance, right now I have a six-year-old entreating me for a cheese sandwich, which he'll get as soon as I'm done posting this).

So yeah, don't think this one's for me, thanks anyway guys...

The unlocks may be worth it IF you tell us what they are now. But otherwise I don't intend to win this thing since players are known to level max multiple characters each day (and they DO).

As for the title, if this isn't account wide that would be yet ANOTHER perk my completionist toon can NEVER get.

Oi... and I just recently leveled three toons to L40, including one last night.

But I had another character concept/idea, so I don't mind making a new toon to do this. Not sure if I can get to L40, but I'll give it a try.

I don't expect the grand/second prize, but what are the other "guaranteed unlocks"? Will they be sharable to my other toons or bound to the new L40 toon(s)? Can you please provide more details on the "stack of MODs and a Catalyst pack"? Is the "The Ascendant" title an in-game perk for just that toon, an account-wide title-unlock (would really love this, as I've toons that were "born" pre-contest that would love that title), or perhaps a forum title?

Anyway, thanks for the contest. It is appreciated. Please, also though, take a look and comment in this thread about the "Torrent of Bugs" unleashed in the game of late. Thanks!

I was trying to get to level 40 to unlock another character slot. But unfortunately I can't complete Vibora Bay Crisis due to a bug with Valerian Scarlet disappearing during the fight in the "No Time Like the Present Mission". :(

It's listed as Bug #61 in the Torrent of Bugs thread.

I would like to participate in this event, but I can't make new toons.

I have a silver account (always have had silver account), I have an available slot, and when I try to make a new toon, I get the "no available slot" error.

Is this irony, or simply cruelty?

I can tolerate a valiant effort from a Level 6, Jenny. There's a difference, in my experience, between 'low level characters' and 'some idiot with a [archetype] or [random power build] that has no damned clue what they are doing'. I've seen healers (with more than the level 6 powers) trying to DPS the boss and charging in without support. I've seen people with the Soldier AT spray the SMG with no bleed effect. I've seen some crap in alerts.

As far as this whole 'leveling contest' thing goes, it's kind of a silly idea. It's like sending people out to a soccer match in a new field, except not all the landmines have been cleared.

Valiant effort only gets a person so far and quite frankly, if all a level 6 has is a tier 1 blast with absolutely nothing buffing it, and suffers greatly in the survivability department with no defensive passive or heals, I'm not to pull the wool over my eyes and pretend that there's any ample contribution being considered here when the higher-levelled players (who are worth their salt) are obviously doing most of the work.

If a player wants to exercise their right in bringing a level 6 to an alert with the expectations of being carried then it's only fair that I reserve the right not to partake in it.

I don't know why they aren't tiered, like hero games are. That would make a whole lot of sense! Even allow for different difficulty levels, themes. They could have a lot of fun with it, if they hadn't pushed it prematurely.

Though, level 6's in my alerts doesn't usually bother me. For the first ten levels or so, its an alert per level anyways. So they aren't level 6 very long! Though it does get frustrating when the entire TEAM is level 6. That's when you start failing alerts, and it takes more time to level than just questing.

    Anniversary Leveling Contest

You know Champs inside and out, hero, so now's the time to prove it. Every time you level up a character to 40, you're qualifying towards a $250 Amazon gift card or a custom piece of Champs art.

Emphasis mine. If someone like me wants to abuse the game with stuff I'm fairly confident the majority of the community is unaware of then the odds are decidedly in my favor. Ergo, I wouldn't have the contest structured like that. In a week of play I could level all of my empty slots to 40. My empty slots are in the double digits. I'd limit this to one entry per account...but then someone who's hell bent on "winning" could just roll a bunch of silver accounts...

That's all well and good but I highly doubt you'll pull yourself away from GW2 long enough to level more than an alt or two.

I also highly doubt anybody is actually going to put in the effort required to shift the odds in their favor like that.

I hope this isn't in lieu of an actual event. It's also a drastic change in direction. Cryptic games have always been about the journey, not the rush to endgame...

What is happening? Where's Cryptic? I feel like the game's been abandoned and is being maintained by a pack of dingos. Dingos ate my baby!

Nothing bad about having an event, about time we got some stuff going on from the Cryptic/PW side, just the timing could have been better. Game being in a way it is now and all.
