I wonder if they are going to have beast options? Like Wolves and Lion's and Birds and snakes and stuff. I mean understandably those models take alot of work to make happen but people really seem to like them in both COX and CO.
That and I'll be blunt, the furry community has a large interest in both COX and CO. They might be a little weird, but they are surprisingly numerous. Kind of like bronies lol. Despite the stereotype applied to both I never had any problems with either group, so more players interested is better IMO.
There's a problem. Besides all the stereotypes, which may or may not be true in all cases. It's not my thing, I don't like it, but to each their own.
The problem comes when you have a completely different head and body structure than a normal 'humanoid' face, and then extra resources are needed to make all the costume parts across the board work for everyone.
A ninja mask for all the humanoid faces is easy. But then people start demanding them for wolf heads and eagle heads and elephant heads and horse heads, and then it's a whine-fest.
I don't really see 'furries' as a part of Comic Book Lore. I see some animal-ish characters, but not 'Lance the Talking Wolf'. I think they should focus more on people who want a Superhero game more so than Furry Fans. Otherwise, they out to start making Japanese Mechs and Superdemon pieces and Cowboy outfits.
Remember that part of what makes CO the cluster of silliness that it is- they tried to appeal to every possible gamer out there. Focus is required.

Hey.. there's superhero cowboys! And technically, many Japanese tokusatsu series can count as superheroes (Sentai and Metal Warrior and Kamen Rider come to mind).

Eventually, fine. But Sentai have never struck out at me as 'Superheroes', but I can kinda see how you could use tights and such to create them and all, so I've never objected.

Don't get me wrong, I knew when I asked the question that it entails work beyond the normal. I fully expect that their addition would be something that happens after launch, not at launch. Likely a low priority after launch thing as well.
Nonetheless these were things that were fairly popular in both COH and CO so they seem to have their fans. In fact one was linked in this thread with the Mecha-Winged Eagle. I don't think of it as a comic book base but a customer base thing. Especially in a game where you aim to be able to make a hero using whatever power they wanted.
I was just asking if that kind of character was planned to be in.
As for appearance of them, they more often than not appear as villains than heros because anything not human automatically has a way higher chance of being a villain. Including robots, perhaps especially robots lol . (likely due to the fear, likely rightly so, that people would not be able to relate to the hero as strongly if not human)
Well-Known animal/beastial Super-Hero/Villain Characters off the of of my head:
I'm sure some others know more and if you include manga I'm sure there is plenty more. Books as well, like Guin Saga (might as well be a superhero lol). Either way an extremely large amount of heros/villains call themselves animal names and even go to great lengths to resemble them in mutation or costume/equipment. As technology progresses I believe you'll only see an increasing number of these type of characters. Especially when people start actually doing genetic manipulation in RL *flinch*.
I'll play the game regardless and it's not gonna make or break my day, but neither will I be dismissive of the idea in game or in comic.
Out of my many many alts on COX/CO I did have a few animal/bestial alts and liked the idea I could do that even if most were not of that type. Favorite being Mad Cow Mel on COX. Mad Cow disease mutated and infested his body, changing him from an ordinary cow to something much more person like (using the COX cow head :P). Forced to flee for a very long time from people fearful of his appearance and disease he found acceptance finally in an isolated dojo with a master who taught him to defend himself (with katana) and harness his mutation for his own benefit, as well as to keep himself non-infectious. With the COX tools I was able to make I believe the Willpower set look like a sickly cloud around him with him snorting sickly smoke while breathing as an aura.
Unexpectedly became one of my most fun and favorite concepts. He was just fun to do some very light RPing with and the look/power customization worked well.
I don't really plan on discussing the furry part of it much. I considered them just a customer base, and not a destructive one, for the consideration of this interest. Other people are interested, but of course they would be more interested than most.
The group does have stereotypes, and are much maligned (partly their own fault, partly misunderstanding) but really much like bronies they are not any better or worse than anyone else. They are just one more group of nerds. At one time I judged both furries and bronies, but despite the efforts of a small amount of them to attempt to provide bad impressions I discovered them to be just another flavor of nerd. Nearly identical to the other flavors of nerd. Only real difference is the exact content housing the same mentalities.
Irony here is that the Star Wars, Star Trek, video game, and comic book fandoms used to be viewed in much the same negative light. I suspect that, much like those groups, in 20 years hearing of a furry or a brony won't raise many eyebrows anymore.
It's interesting to hear how much they focus on X or Y from some folks and then see TV, the internet, the people at work, etc all focusing on the same thing. /shrug, perspective.
Not to derail.. buuuut it's the loud, obnoxious ones of all minorities that cry when they're being repremanded (and claim it's for that specific interest they have) that causes people to outright hate them... also the ones that take their interest too far and pretty much impose it on people every chance they get.

*takes train, gently sets it back on rails*
there are plenty of examples of bestial styled heroes. As far as full on animal people, I can't really remember any offhand... which is weird because I like furry stuff. However, it sounds to me like they want to spread the genre blanket as thin as possible in CoT, so including all possible options would mean including the ability to make animal people. Depending on the specific options they make available in that catagory, they could be looking at quite a large audience... now, what effect that audience will have on their role playing scene and general chat channels, who knows... fact is though, people hear there's an mmo where you can make cute animal people, they'll come runnin'.
And yes, anthromorphs are a thing a few of the devs are working towards. Rocket Cat especially (and he's one of the artists soooooo..)

I don't like furries, and there aren't that many animal-head heroes.
The thing is, though, that they're going to probably need animal models for enemies, and if they have UGC, they will want animal parts so people can make their own mobs and villains.
So, there's some incentive there.
Campaign: The Fenwick Cycle NWS-DKR9GB7KH
Wicks and Things: NW-DI4FMZRR4 : The Fenwick merchant family has lost a caravan! Can you help?
Beggar's Hollow: NW-DR6YG4J2L : Someone, or something, has stolen away many of the Fenwicks' children! Can you find out what happened to them?
Into the Fen Wood: NW-DL89DRG7B : Enter the heart of the forest. Can you discover the secret of the Fen Wood?
I believe that the folks Cybersoldier speaks of are those who want all the costume options, from masks to hoods to helmets to armor, to apply to all the animal parts. You might notice, however, that in the above list, none of the animalistic characters listed wear masks; the closest thing to a "costume" in the bunch would be the official X-Men tights that the Beast wears/wore (I thought I heard that he died after bringing the young X-Men forward in time, but I could be mistaken). Oh, yes, and Curt Connors still wears the tattered remains of his old lab coat. No armored beast legs or hoods with little cutouts for kitty ears, though. (And I've noticed the loudest complaints from furries are from the catgirls.)
I like the ability to make not-fully-human toons, like Pursues-the-Unseen (a mage from a world where the dominant intelligent life form is descended from wolves - his species is Canis sapiens). However, there's no point in a traditional superhero disguise, because it's not like there are thousands of other wolf-men running around Mill City for him to hide among. The same reasoning applies to other human/animal hybrid types - all those costume choices that are primarily intended to hide the identity just don't make sense for those toons.
So, in your character creator, please don't feel obligated to make every single costume piece work for every single body type, humanoid or non-. Just worry about the ones that make some kind of sense.
"Science teaches us to expect -- demand -- more than just eerie mysteries. What use is a puzzle that can't be solved? Patience is fine, but I'm not going to stop asking the universe to make sense!"

The last derail here:
Trekkies aren't reporting me for 'racism and hate speech' when I say 'I think Klingons are stupid'.

You just can't get away from that kind of things these days. Literally every group in existence now does this . Personally it makes me want to smack most of them. But every single nerd fandom has people that conform to both stereotypes mentioned here. It's one of the things I bring into line with various groups I hang out with, running interference on occasion for the poor hapless souls some of these folks attach themselves to. I've had to do this for something as mundane as music or photography enthusiasts.
I believe that the folks Cybersoldier speaks of are those who want all the costume options, from masks to hoods to helmets to armor, to apply to all the animal parts.
Honestly, I could be wrong being uninformed, but considering they will need to fit normal people and the stereotypical HUGE body type I don't think this will be much of a problem. Now if you are talking about masks fitting on the animal head, I don't think that's ever been expected or required for these type heroes and I've heard little other than appreciation for the animal/bestial options included in COX/CO sans mask options.
You might notice, however, that in the above list, none of the animalistic charactes listed wear masks; the closest thing to a "costume" in the bunch would be the official X-Men tights that the Beast wears/wore (I thought I heard that he died after bringing the young X-Men forward in time, but I could be mistaken). I agree completely. While in some far distant future it would be nice if some of those things worked for the characters, honestly you would be working to improve things for a % of a % of people. That's just not equitable and honestly most of the people that want this kind of thing either want it blatant or as an alternate costume so they can go incognito as befitting their origin or other reasons.
For instance I had a fire/fire tanker named Shid Aqua (Shidoqua Thelas in their tongue, but the mangled version stuck) who was reptilian but wore armor all the time for both safety against prejudice and to contain the fire based powers they couldn't properly contain for the safety of others on their own. Alternate costume let me change mid-mission if I so chose to "put my game face on" and "stop holding back" for hard fights.
Now since community content may be part of this MMORPG and we get access to a very close version of the dev tools, maybe such small interest ranges of people will be able to create their own costume parts and submit them, being accepted if they measured up to a certain quality. Community created costume parts would certainly take a little pressure off of the devs. One only has to look at Skyrim to see what dedicated (to absurd degrees sometimes) players can do on their own. Or indeed look at COT itself for proof of that .
Trekkies aren't reporting me for 'racism and hate speech' when I say 'I think Klingons are stupid'.
Welcome to the modern age where everyone is a victim and bullying laws are in schools, protecting kids and preventing them from learning how to deal with the treatment they will receive when they leave school. Every group is a minority and discriminated against or misunderstood in their own eyes. Everyone wants government protection or authority to support their agenda and smite their enemies.
I fully agree with you that this type of behavior is stupid. I curb it when I can being a bit older than most who claim this stuff. But Trekkies are no longer under fire because now THEY are the adults, this was a different climate back in the day. Trekkies don't get messed with because they are considered normal now and there are other groups like bronies, furries, emos, weeabos, juggalos, twihards, etc to take their place.
Trekkies are downright boring now by comparison and it's now just an accepted MAIN STREAM interest. Quite a change from when everyone considered them virgin losers who were weird and had no life. Nerds in general had this classification but back then Trekkies were branded the worse.
(And I've noticed the loudest complaints from furries are from the catgirls.)
See, how often people will be making the same mistake? Like calling EVERYTHING that has fur a "furry" character?
Term "furry" applies only to antropomorphic characters with heads of either entirely animal proportions, or between human and animal proportions. It should be used only for antropomorphics.
If something has human-like head, even with small animal details like ears or eyes, then term "furry" doesn't apply.
It really pisses me to no end when people are calling everything as a "furry" - a mutant, a werewolf, a catgirl. Not every character with animal-like traits qualify. Beast is not furry, Tigra is not furry. Rahne is not furry.

Easy there. Little too strong. You are being exactly what was discussed earlier. Too aggressive. The honest truth is while your are correct about cat girls and incorrect about beast (he's simian) most of these folks simply don't care. (Thundercats are grey area)
All you are doing is fullfilling a negative stereotype atm. Be a little less zealous and aggressive and more aware and respectful of those you are speaking to please. Right or wrong, take their point of view into consideration. Also, it's unlikely any of them would know better so a reaction of this sort wouldn't be warranted to begin with.
Truth be told the definition of furry is also something that varies somewhat in the community itself. Some would agree with your definition, some would disagree. Keep that in mind as well.

What stereotype? What you were imagining?
I'm damn tired with making toons based on comic books only to have these classified as "furry" when they aren't even remotely related and I'm not a part of this fandom.
So stop playing an expert if you don't know motivation.
Also, Beast is just a mutant and a character on his own. Not a simian, not a furry. He was drawn in a different way by many artists. Doesn't need to be shoehorned into modern fandom tags. It applies to awful lot of other comic book characters.
Don't teach people manners. Given your previous performance in closed topic about CoT, you're not exactly qualified.
All you are doing is fullfilling a negative preachy holier-than-thou I-know-better stereotype atm.

Ok, ok, now that each of us shared our opinions lets just let it drop. You won't find any arguement from me. I just presented what I know from in excess of a decade as part of that group as well as others. If you disagree that is perfectly ok, as I said the definition is up for debate within the fandom regularly. Please go debate it there if you wish to continue, but this is not the place.
Despite being one I regret mentioning them now. I only mentioned them as a potentially large customer base (for this game anyhows) regarding an eventual feature. Because on a business level it's sound, but the personal and business mindsets of some seem to have gotten mixed.
There are hundereds, possibly thousands, of that group that played CO and COX and liked it without anyone ever knowing. Without the need to be incredibly loud and vocal as a small % of them are wont to be. I know of approximately a hundred or so that pledged or planned to just in my small slice of perception. They were excited.
My apologies for this unintentional derailment, I take full responsibility. Hopefully we can get back on track now.
There are two good reasons to cater to furry costuming:
1) big potential audience with good overlapping interests
2) with UGC, makes it WAY easier to make a wider variety of interesting enemies (and anthropomorph enemies ARE particularly common in comic books)
The point about masks and whatnot is a good one, though the more options one can use to mix it up, the better. 'Purple catpeople of Saturn with big bug antenna are invading from dimension X!'
Again, I'm not a fan of furries. But hey, their money is green.

actually, yeah, about those stretch goals. i noticed tails being on the 800+k level. if that is not reached, does that mean that there will be no tails at launch, but will come later perhaps as part of a paid pack, no tails period or just one or two tails with fewer customization options than if the ks goal is hit? just wondering since thats kind of a thing for my main character.

It means tails (more than likely a bunch of different types with one or two types already available at launch) will be added at a later date, probably a month or two after launch. It'd technically be free in that it'd have been paid for by the people who bought the "box". From what I understand, all the stretch goals will be free to the players.

ok, cool, honestly i wouldnt even mind paying for it, given the start-up nature of the operation and the need for influx of cash, but cool. after dcou royally flubbed on this topic i was just making sure.
Any stretch goals that we don't meet will still happen, just, you know, not at launch. Believe me, I want tails and wings and auras and etc in there as much as anyone else.
These goals are basically "if we get $X, we can do these faster because Y and Z".

Exactly, only I'd say not to cater to them. Just include them as a demographic who's interests will be purchasing things while still providing content for everyone that will be used (even if it's as more diverse enemy groups). It's always about content that will serve everyone, even if some are specifically interested in it more than others.

The devs are being very involved during the kickstarter. I only hope they keep a reasonable amount of that energy and talking to the community past when the kickstarter ends. I love hearing devs and reps talk about their games excitedly as actual people instead of being almost completely mum like alot of big corps do.
Even the more reserved ones such as Kelplankton comment as real people and I appreciate that. *hugs* for you all and your hard work.

Ahem. Action figures.
Choose your enemies carefully, because they will define you / Make them interesting, because in some ways they will mind you
They're not there in the beginning, but when your story ends / Gonna last with you longer than your friends
Oh, I have another question if any COT reps are still reading.
I liked the dropped powerups in CO and the inspiration system in COX even better. Bad spawns and bosses a little out of your league could be handled when using such systems to your benefit, but were difficult to abuse.
Will COT have any sort of inspiration/powerup type system to give us those boosts of power for short amounts of time so necessary to stopping some of the "oh crap" situations? They made me feel more powerful/awesome and if you played bad or bit off too much you'd still die.
randell.. you know you can go to the forums and ask there. Will be answered MUCH quicker.

Hey.. there's superhero cowboys!
Hero:
Beast (X-Men)
Villain:
Man-Wolf (Spiderman)
The Lizard (Spiderman)
Killer Croc (Batman)
Cheetah (Justice League)
Not to derail... but I'm going to go ahead and derail.
My super cool CC build and how to use it.
And yes, anthromorphs are a thing a few of the devs are working towards. Rocket Cat especially (and he's one of the artists soooooo..)
The thing is, though, that they're going to probably need animal models for enemies, and if they have UGC, they will want animal parts so people can make their own mobs and villains.
So, there's some incentive there.

My super cool CC build and how to use it.

They are surprisingly interested in industrial, robotic looks, and cyberpunk so you are double served. It's all about the Benjamins .
Sounds like it would be good for all of us that like to play with virtual online dolls.
Ahem. Action figures.

True enough.
$678,189 from 5,003 backers. Seven stretch goals, including mobile character creator apps on both iOS and Android, Mac support at launch, and MOAR STUFF (auras, travel powers, emotes, wings, power sets, and costume sets).
Congratulations, City of Titans team!
(Oh, and if Cryptic ever needed to have a fire lit under them for CO in 2014, watching over half a million dollars go to a competitor that only exists in a bunch of people's garages that's two years from launch ought to do it.)

Congratz. I hope it leads them to actually getting the game created or at least to the next step. Good to see they are getting support.
Many people donated because they want to see the train wreck. I know I did :P
