Why do you play video games?

Escapism, pure and and simple. The ability to do things, go places, talk to people I never will and never can in the real world. To be, for a little while, the daring adventurer, the race car driver, the super-spy.

To see worlds that can never exist, and imagine for just a little bit that somewhere out there it can.

To flee from the humdrum, the mundane, the workaday world.

Depends on the genre but ultimately to pass the time and emotionally cope with being disabled and to give me periods of relaxation when i'm not striving to improve the world through human rights work.

Superhero games? To immerse myself in a character and world that is engaging, that deals with wish-fulfilment both in matters of a simple action-oriented solution to injustice and also the enjoyment of the fantasy of super-powers.

I play superhero games to experience the illusion of being able to fly, to lift and throw cars, to thump thugs, to zap villainy, to rescue people in distress, fight natural disasters, to make wrong things right, to experience the fun of creating and/or engaging in the tropes of superheros.

This showed up on reddit today
Looks like they broke Marc LeBlanc's website on 8 kinds of fun.

    I'll summarize
    • Sensation - Game as sense-pleasure
    • Fantasy - Game as make-believe
    • Narrative - Game as unfolding story
    • Challenge - Game as obstacle course
    • Fellowship - Game as social framework
    • Discovery - Game as uncharted territory
    • Expression - Game as soap box
    • Submission - Game as mindless pastime

They should incorporate a nice UI with these items as sliders to post your mood about the game over time.
That would make such an awesomely colorful graph.
MMO Population Mood Analysis Online, thats the game for me.

    Seems they forgot:
    E-peen - Game as ego-stroker

(although that could be a combination of Fantasy and Fellowship)

Nah, E-peen is all of them. It's really the ultimate form.

Game as sense pleasure of seeing those numbers accumulate.
Game as make believe that those numbers adding up mean something.
Game as an unfolding story about how you accumulated those numbers.
Game as an obstacle course of the hurdles to accumulate those numbers.
Game as a social framework to discuss the accumulation of those numbers.
Game as uncharted territory of just how high those accumulated numbers can go.
Game as a soapbox of expressing the accumulation of those numbers in various ways.
Game as a mindless pastime of accumulating those numbers.

And all of that serves to stroke the ego of the person(s) doing it.

I mean, think about it. Imagine doing something like chasing after the currency cap...

But when you put it that way, nothing in life is really any different.

Besides, exercising virtue in fulfilling functions that a community of peers appreciates is the highest form of human flourishing.

I don't play many Video games. Two. NBA 2K 13 sometimes...ok hardly ever!
And CO! I have always liked heroes. From comics as a kid, to movies and such as an adult.
When COH came out, i was there first day and didn't leave until 4 plus years later.

Then came Champs and i was hooked! To be open about it though, this wouldn't even be my first choice if EA hadn't bought up the NFL gaming or Football license to EVERYTHING FOOTBALL years ago, leaving madden to be the only choice. I HATE MADDEN and EA forever!!

I would most likely be playing a 2K sports version of Football, if it existed that is!(Burn in hell, EA!)

    Anyway, that's my story.

Cool. I used to do that too. I even played 2k's attempt at a new football game a few years back.

"All Pro football" i played that to death, but it still wasn't NFL 2k5.
Best Football game ever IMHO.

    O.K. Listen.
Deep end of the ocean here:
    That goose in the bottle?
    It dies.
Outside of nonsense proverbs, a goose does NOT peck its way out.
It CUTS its way out with a special tooth that it LOOSES in a matter of days.
So it chokes to death on the fumes of its own filth LONG before it gets strong enough to get free.
Especially considering how completely atrophied all of its limbs would be.
    Spoiler Alert:

What you do is tell some soft hearted sap all of the horrible things that will happen to this poor little animal if the experiment is not stopped, but that, ethically, you cannot possibly stop it yourself (you know, because of ethics). But you WILL be out of the classroom at noon. For about an hour or so. Wink Wink, Nudge Nudge. Then, when you come back and somehow the goose is free you declare it got out on its own. You know, because of reasons.

Being so enlightened, you would of course know all this.

'Wen considered the nature of time and understood that the universe is, instant by instant, recreated anew. Therefore, he understood, there is in truth no past, only a memory of the past. Blink your eyes, and the world you see next did not exist when you closed them. Therefore, he said, the only appropriate state of the mind is surprise. The only appropriate state of the heart is joy. The sky you see now, you have never seen before. The perfect moment is now. Be glad of it.' Terry Pratchet The Thief Of Time
