Anyone interested in doing a PvP Tournament that is on your own time? Like all who sign up schedule matches with their opponents and fight when they both can. We do a pool style tourny where everyone fights multiple people then tally up their wins/loses. We call it the Kumite and we hold it like once a month or something. We could do all sorts of rules or no rules at all. Anyone sound interested?

Only rule in a pvp tournament should always be ringouts don't count as a win. All other rules are stupid and pointless. I'll do the tournament but won't follow any lame "no devices", "no stealth", "no travel powers", etc, kinda rules.
I do have a feeling this will end up being a bad idea but hey, not much else to do in CO lol.

If you can't prove your worth with in guidelines then maybe you have no worth to prove?
Lol a kumite is a karate test/challenge where you fight up to like 100 people in a row to test your stamina and skill. In hollywood it is a tournament to the death. Only one survivor, the winner. Of course I could be wrong because I only do Jujitsu and know nothing about Karate.

The only major rule that seems to come to mind is perhaps. Melee vs Melee only and Ranged vs Ranged only.
Of course there are builds that use both and some that can even dominate in Ranged vs Melee.
So perhaps a simple study of who uses what kind of build so you can match them with a perfect opponent.
It would be a better way to find who has the best build as each fighter would be using a similar one.
If I had anything worth giving as first prize, that I thought pvpers might care about, I would totally hold a no-holds barred tournament. Only rule would be knockouts aren't a win, but otherwise everything goes.
The most fun part about this tournament would be two things...
1. Being proved right about what kinds of builds would show up...
2. Being proved right about what kind of build would win.
...well, that would be the fun part to me at least... watching the fights would probably be pretty boring.
Now what the heck sort of prize would pvpers care about... cosmic keys?

I set my own guidelines. I am a leader, not a follower. Also, I have nothing to prove. Already beaten every PvPer in this game that plays currently. If I play, it would be for fun

I think you misunderstood what he meant. It's not about being a follower or a leader, it's about showing that you don't just win because of the build. It's like a first-person-shooter... in a regular match with all guns available, you might have some guy who pwns everyone while using a machine gun. Put that guy in a pistols only match, and suddenly he's getting pwnd because he can't adapt to having to aim.
It's really only something for people who really want to prove they're the best by showing off their ability to adapt and succeed under any circumstances... you wouldn't be interested in that though because

I'm not here to judge your ability to use/steal FotM builds and pay your way to 5 devices. I don't care who has been grinding the longest or who THINKS they are great. I care about who can be considered the best by winning within rules set forth by the collective. If you are so amazing and you know it then we can always save a spot for you on the sidelines.

Who me?
Champions Online: Be the hero you wish you could be in a better game.
I honestly see this event working only if you pit those with similar builds together and I have a perfect example of that.
STEALTH.
Now when I think of fighting a stealth user with maxxed out stuns I think "go to hell you cheap bastard" but hey whatever works is their business.
But last night I saw something that interested me.
Stealth Vs Stealth.
Two players with identical builds, when against other builds they one hit kill you but against eachother it became the coolest fight ive ever seen.....well more like I heard it.
Granted they both had high perception gear so they could clearly fight eachother but nobody could see it.
Same thing goes for ranged toon or might toons.
If you make similar builds battle eachother it becomes a very interesting fight.

It worked that way for that melee tournament that was held not so long ago. I don't even want to imagine a stealth tournament though...twelve hours of yawn.

You speak of rules because you are too lazy to "pay your way to 5 devices". The game's dynamic has changed. More and more people are using devices and they are becoming more and more accessible. It's your choice whether you want to adapt to the new changes or live in the past. 1 in 3 duels now are device based, whether its pvp or pve. You don't believe me? Just stand in ren centre for 10 minutes and find out for yourself.
When tako boxes came out, I too shared your views on gear and devices and thought they were a complete waste of time and money. Then more and more people started getting them and using them and I saw the benefits of them.
This tournament you speak of sounds more like you wanting to compensate for your laziness of not "grinding for gear/devices" by playing it off as "rules by the collective" when in reality, 80-90% of pvpers nowadays already have all the gear/devices they want for their builds. You just want everyone to throw away the effort and time they put into acquiring a more versatile playstyle so you and people who share your opinion on devices can brag and downplay the hard working people of the community who grinded for their stuff.
If a tournament is to be held, it should be a modern tournament where everything and anything is available to everyone. That is just my opinion.
You speak of rules because you are too lazy to "pay your way to 5 devices".
I should have stopped reading right there. Too lazy to pay? You mean poor? Sure... The truth is I have R9 mods and devices like the rest of Elitist PvPers because I dropped an endless flow of cash into this game. Does that make me the best PvPer? Fack no. Just makes my pockets deep and patience short.
You sound like you want to have the tournament "Modern" because you rely on all your devices and stuff to win. If you don't want to compete in a tourny that doesn't bother me one bit. If having rules is such a big deal to you then don't compete. This might explain why you still play this game, because it has one of the lowest standards of balance in any MMO. You probably enjoy winning by any means necessary.
That is completely OK. Just don't compete in this tourny.
Yeah, more and more people are using devices. At the same time, less and less people are interested in any form of pvp. Coincidence?
"Why get our hands dirty... when we can have the players get rid of our little... problem, for us? Mwahahahahahahaha!"
The plan is working!
Mmmmmmmhmmmm.
A PvP tournament where the only rule is 'ringouts don't win'? but but but some guy could just run up and instakill someone by spamming 5 NPGs in a row or or or spamming all of their teleiosaur pheremones
Oh right. That's how PvP is supposed to be nowadays, right? That sucks. *doesn't participate, encourages friends to do the same*

I personally don't need devices to win though. If you have ever fought me in the game you would know that. I only use devices if my opponent starts using them or it is agreed upon before the duel (i.e green's vid). You can ask ANYONE who has dueled me.
I have no problems with competing with no devices, I just think its an unrealistic means of victory. The only devices that should be banned from the tourney imo are eruption and pheramones, everything else is fine in my eyes. Oh well. Count me in. (If it ever happens).
Btw my issue with "rules" is more regarding powers, and less geared towards device use. Like the last tournament not allowing stealth. THAT is what I find stupid. I think all powers should be allowed.
There are a few issues withstanding that has not been resolved.
Firstly, if kane wishes to hold a tourny with NO devices, then he has perfectly every right to. Players who do not agree to this rule can very well choose not to participate in it. Having said that, I think we all know what everyone's stand is as we have gone through all of it before.
From my perspective, devices are here, and they are here to stay. Refusing to accept them does not cause players who use them to be sidelined but rather the other way round.
Smoochan, I do not think the decline of PvP has much to do with devices but rather the lack of any useful/substantial rewards in PvP. It cannot be denied. There is no motivation for normal players who are not hardcore PvPers to pick up the skills and knowledge to PvP since there is just no need for it. Sell Legion gear for acclaims and watch what happens.
Keikomyst, spamming 5 NPGs will not work because the target will be knocked away before the second NPG can hit and they have an effective range of 4 ft making them almost useless against any kiting range pvper. There is some amount of positioning and timing involved in order to use it for PvP. Any of the devices can be countered. The trick is being prepared for all the possible tricks up another player's sleeves.
Kaneofchaos, the tourny you seem to be suggesting and which Smoochan has interpreted is focused on key smashing and hand-eye coordination responses. Then to really make this a "fair fight" what Cyraxis suggested is probably imo the closest you can get to it. 2 identical builds with exact same gear fighting. But even then, as I pointed out many a times, the difference in connection and lag from different regions and countries can result in an unfair advantage which would invalidate such a fight. Also, the reason to exclude devices is because they are OP but then why not ban shadowstrike, or how about 2GM or strafing run and where do we stop? However, as I said it is your tourny which you have all rights to set the rules and those who wish to participate will abide by the rules while those who don't agree can just choose not to take part.
In a sense, Braddkash was right that such competitions of reflexes and "skills" lies more in the domain of FPS or what I suggested before, an arcade fighting game. Such a competition by its "exclusivity" already blocks out certain toons. I use my own build as an example. Some will say that devices are not part of a build. However, there is the other faction who will tell you that they are all part of the game and it is up to players to decide what and how they want to use it. Afterall, why not ban darkspeed from PvP as well? It gives a 3rd travel power afterall. Should we say no legion gear since they are so much more exclusive and costly compared to devices? There is no end to this.
Smoochan, allow me to quote you on this one.
"It's really only something for people who really want to prove they're the best by showing off their ability to adapt and succeed under any circumstances... you wouldn't be interested in that though because"
This sentence is really quite confusing because if it is for people who really want to adapt and succeed under any circumstances (hardcore-out-to-win-only-pvper) they would get their hands on any device, gear, mod and use whichever method they can to win will they not? Because these players would have adapted to the devices (whether it be to use them or to counter them).
Now, for example, if I really wish to participate in this tourney, then I will not be able to use Paragon. Instead, I will create another toon perhaps say 2GM, quarry, ER and strafing run and equip it with stealth sight which is a most effective build in PvP atm. Or perhaps if I know that most folks cannot get their hands on legacy secondary perception gear, I build a con stacking, sleep shadowstriker. Now how does this in anyway promote PvPing and diversity?
End of the day, we have gone through this debate for pretty much the whole of another thread and it will not end in this post or thread. I believe we can see where we each come from. I just wish to conclude with something I pretty much started off the post. The legacy devices are here and they are here to stay. Choosing to ignore and rejecting them essentially cuts yourself away from one aspect of the game.
Keikomyst, spamming 5 NPGs will not work because the target will be knocked away before the second NPG can hit and they have an effective range of 4 ft making them almost useless against any kiting range pvper.
This is not entirely true. With the combination of keybinds and a snare or stun, I've seen 3-4 NPG procs before the victim is able to escape.
Edit: and knock resistance, which is relatively simple to get to 3 with TBL, and Omicron device. The third proc would come from the first NPG and the resistance would stay up long enough to land 3-4 NPG hits, and theoretically, a Strafing Run. This assumes you have Ego Surge, enough energy to cope with a stun and TBL.
Forgive the run-on sentence.

TBL has a range of 60ft, PBR, ER, hurl etc have a range of 100ft. Hence the good kiting PvPer will not even allow the opponent to get close enough. Sleep on the other hand... but PvPers usually have an AO handy to break that. Anyway NPG is easily countered by good dodge or eruption so shrugs...

I can deny it. I can also say that maybe most people play video games to be rewarded in them rather than to play just for the enjoyment of the game. I would've started immediately with PvP but I saw it as horrendously imbalanced, and now it's far worse. I only continued because I wanted to try for the gear and then later simply because I could. If there never were any rewards and with better balance I probably would've played anyway.
Yeah, I think anyone who uses devices all the time is a noob, but the way I see it, it completely hosed pvp and made it extremely frustrating to most who wanted to try. It wasn't the primary cause. To me, the primary cause is attacks that are overpowered and make it difficult for other builds (and other types of builds) that worked before to be successful. Everything said here makes sense to me.

This isn't necessarily true either, because I've fought plenty of fights where the knock didn't work and I got hit 4 or 5 times. It doesn't always kill, but it happens. If you don't believe me, watch brad's video. ^_~ Keiko is right.
Any of the devices can be countered. The trick is being prepared for all the possible tricks up another player's sleeves.
While that's true I still consider it noobish, but anyone else can be in approval of them or not, and you're right about the fact that the person hosting the tourney sets the rules.
While there may be a counter for everything, that doesn't inherently constitute 'balance.' However, if these things are all allowed in a tournament then you can either accept the rules or refuse to participate.

Everything within this quote needs to be thought through carefully and much, much more, and if the host says devices are allowed, then that's what the rules are. I would hope that most would see the as noob but if people want to use them then it can't be stopped.
I'd also like to add here that tournaments aren't about who can build better or even who can play better, it's about proving your ability at that time. If there is any other reason why you don't win when you could, then that is outside of the purpose of competition. People participate in them because they want to win and they think they have a shot... there may be builds or builders that would be better that never enter, and there may not be. It's all about who wins there and nothing else.

Hence my point that devices does not have MUCH to do and not ANYTHING to do with the demise of PvP.

A person who does not play the way you do, does not necessarily constitute a noob. There is no need for derogatory terms. Why would it be extremely frustrating? The devices as many pointed out are available in AH. Just as someone can grind and level, people can also grind and purchase. There are many attacks which are overpowered without even getting into devices and there is no denying that. The devices simply provide more choices. Let me put forth a simple example. Prior to the Telieosaurus Pheromones, have you seen a successful pets build in PvP?
This isn't necessarily true either, because I've fought plenty of fights where the knock didn't work and I got hit 4 or 5 times. It doesn't always kill, but it happens. If you don't believe me, watch brad's video. ^_~ Keiko is right.
If you get hit by the first one because the knock did not work, it may be a good idea to move away from the second and third one. However a lapse of attention leading to getting hit by a second or third would then be an issue of the player.
While that's true I still consider it noobish, but anyone else can be in approval of them or not, and you're right about the fact that the person hosting the tourney sets the rules.

Yup, you are right that because there is a counter, it does not mean there is balance. In fact there is NO balance in this game which has always been my point. Removing the devices does not reinstate balance. In fact it just further reduces the pool of possible options for PvP. AoPM, Quarry, ER, 2GM, SR, MD, Ascension, FG, Sleep, Shadowstrike, are these not OP compared to the rest of the powers? Should these then be forbidden in a balanced competition?
Everything within this quote needs to be thought through carefully and much, much more, and if the host says devices are allowed, then that's what the rules are. I would hope that most would see the as noob but if people want to use them then it can't be stopped.

Once again, I would request that you reserve the opinions of device users as noobs. Undoubtedly PvP "is about proving your ability at THAT time to win". In this case the time and state of the game includes a range of powers, spec skills, gears, mods and devices and the ability of a player to select from these options to put together a build and to control it in the game environment (be it duel or HG) using the smoothest bandwidth possible. By stating that devices or certain powers or certain gear or mods cannot be used, then that is just artificially creating a condition narrower than what the game provides. As I pointed out, I have no issues what a tourney organizer wishes to set for his/her competition as he/she has all rights to do it.
The purpose of my post is merely to point out that if we wish to create an environment which is a perfect balance, then the only way will be to confine both competitors to the exact same conditions (with exception for bandwidth I guess). Any other half-hearted efforts will be a mockery to itself.
Borrowing the example which I had used in previous arguments, a fair fight in an arcade fighting game like SF will be something like Akuma vs Akuma. Akuma is far stronger than say Sakura. If a player chooses to use Sakura and loses, is he/she then to impose that anyone who fights him/her cannot use their hadouken? However, if the player who uses Sakura wins such a tough fight, then the more people will recognize this player as very skilful.
Let's bring this to real life. In a soccer match, do we complain that it is not fair because a football team has spent more money to recruit an extremely skilled player and hence during the league, this star player cannot be allowed to play otherwise it is not balanced?
Whomever hosts a tournament has every right to set rules. That's the whole point of an tourney sponsored by a group or individual. I have 4 toons for PvP/Duels, including a melee toon (which I made specifically for dueling Darkon's melee ), and I have no problem conforming to the rules of a tournament.

The best way to kill an opponent is to attack them from all sides. PvP is currently surrounded by things meant to kill it. Lack of rewards is one, power imbalance is another, devices is a third, on the fourth side we have the queue limit, and raining down from above is the community itself being used as a weapon, much like nuclear fallout.
Is any one of these killing it more than the others? ...does it really matter? They're all problems that you're powerless to combat.
Looks like the Devs have the best build in this duel.

Oh, kind of off-topic but I decide to hijack just this post to say something regarding all the flaming going on.
I think that many in their eagerness to embrace the freedom of expression often forget that it does not protect one from libel and slander.
A personal opinion is no longer a personal opinion once it is openly expressed and it is not a matter of whether the offended party chooses to ignore it or not but the impact that an untruth may have on the populace who had received the message as well as the repercussion on the subject whether he/she chooses to ignore it or otherwise.
For example, if a troll posted on forum or shouted in main that I am a murderer (which is not true), even though I may choose to ignore it but others who read or heard it will have been affected by this and for those who do not know any better will become wary in their dealings with me hence inadvertently resulting in harm/loss (not necessarily in the physical sense) to me. As such, even though the mute function can be abused, it does have a purpose.
Hence for those in the forum cooking up lies and making nasty remarks, I suggest you consider using this forum as a medium for useful discourse and debate rather than the basal state it has degenerated into.

You're misunderstanding what you quoted. Allow me to explain. It goes back to what I said about a first person shooter and a pistols only match.
Think of it this way. You have a fighter, and he practices all techniques possible... punching, kicking, grappling. Now someone challenges him to a kicking-only fight. He accepts. However, he is unable to adapt to the restriction, and finds himself unable to win.
Now we have a second fighter; he also practices all techniques possible. He is also challenged to a kicking-only fight. However, he is able to adapt to the restriction and manages to win despite being unable to use all of his techniques.
Which of those two would you say is the better fighter? The first one who can only win without restrictions, or the second who can manage to win even with restrictions?
Now what if there was a third fighter, who also practices all techniques possible. He is challenged to a kicking-only fight... but he refuses, stating that "kicking only fights aren't real fights and aren't worth my time".
I hope you understand what the thing you quoted means now.

It's less about diversity and more about trying to get away from all the BS. Like chat bans, pvp balance has been put in the hands of the players, and in an open anything-goes pvp environment, this has turned out about as well as chat bans have.
Creating a tournament with special rules is analogous to folks preffering to chat in a private channel, rather than zone chat. As strange as it may sound, restrictions do create diversity, because it's the only realistic way of preventing people from immediately going for the obvious choices that will let them win easily over anyone who doesn't go for the obvious choices.
Those obvious choices are the best way to kill diversity, so you have to get rid of them, and the devs aren't doing it.

My only real question is rewards. The winner of the tourny clearly doesn't need any sort of reward, but maybe they deserve one. Should we offer something to the losers? Will that make the losers lose on purpose? Should it be a pride/reputation only tourny?
Either way I'm going to make a tracker of the results. Probably going to include some part of your build and your win/loss ratio.
I'm also slightly worried about numbers and attendance. But if we do a everyone fights everyone style, then we could alleviate that. Even if only 2-3 people show up I'm going to post results and maybe that will spark more people to compete.
Oh hmm maybe just enlist people interested and make matches at different days and hours since not anyones is in the same time zone?
Rewards? 1000g for the winner...just hand them to me already Xp
Tournaments like this have been held quite often when i was more active.
It's definitely a good idea and there's tons of prizes you can use to motivate people into participating.
Most of the "heavy" PvPers(or old PvP players that don't play it anymore) would be quite interested in it.
Especially since we now have Arenas in the Powerhouse, so it's easier than ever to coordinate and have enough space for everything.
(Especially now since the CoPvP channel is open again).
Also, team-duels now exist.
Also also, Lemuria is a viable tournament location if you're worried about knockback champs dominating competitions.
EDIT:
Also, for any non-hardcore players simply interested in PvP, we could have a seperate tournament, sort of like a tier. One where you would not necessarily need to have a min-maxed build, but concepts and hybrids would be usable too.

Oh yeah...memories...remember that tournament DM had won? There still must be a thread with photos
Hence my point that devices does not have MUCH to do and not ANYTHING to do with the demise of PvP.
This is why I implied that I was just agreeing with you here.
A person who does not play the way you do, does not necessarily constitute a noob.
I could say the same thing about you. I think certain powers are noobish and there are reasons why I do. It has nothing to do with whether or not I can deal with it. In fact, I wouldn't have queued for bash if I never could. I think you know why PvP is fundamentally flawed, so I won't assume that I need to explain. I think this is a very odd thing for me to hear you to say in particular, especiallly since you and I have fought each other twice now.
I don't think I need to explain why PvP is frustrating to most people in this game.
If you get hit by the first one because the knock did not work, it may be a good idea to move away from the second and third one. However a lapse of attention leading to getting hit by a second or third would then be an issue of the player.
This has nothing to do with moving away. This is about the probability of not being knocked while within range.
If your point is that there is no balance in this game, then I'll have to say that's incorrect, unless you mean the entire game as a whole. There are plenty of powers that are (or once were) fine just the way they are.
I'd like to do whatever I want with my opinions, and I'd expect you to do the same, and I'd encourage you to debate with me if you're right. It's what I've always expected.
The purpose of my post is merely to point out that if we wish to create an environment which is a perfect balance, then the only way will be to confine both competitors to the exact same conditions (with exception for bandwidth I guess). Any other half-hearted efforts will be a mockery to itself.
I understand the purpose of your post. The purpose of mine was to confirm what you said and add a few things.
My post wasn't about complaints or the ability to deal with those things. My point was they throw this game out of balance and the amount that they throw it out of balance makes me consider them noobish. :P I still haven't given you a real definition of that, but that is beyond the scope of this thread.

Sorry, I totally do not understand what you are saying in this paragraph. I also forgot most of who I duelled with a couple of months back since I hardly do them them these days unless someone comes up to challenge me.
I don't think I need to explain why PvP is frustrating to most people in this game.
I believe this has been the case for any new player joining PvP and has always been the case. It is a matter of their resilience and their passion to PvP which allows them to persevere and climb the steep learning curve.
This has nothing to do with moving away. This is about the probability of not being knocked while within range.
But it does, because the point I am making here is that the NPGs are not that OP in PvP if players are alert to them and keep a distance. Just 2 steps and you are out of effective range.
If your point is that there is no balance in this game, then I'll have to say that's incorrect, unless you mean the entire game as a whole. There are plenty of powers that are (or once were) fine just the way they are.
I beg to differ. There has never been balance. Even when we bring it to the lowest level, do a duel with 2 level 40 toons with no other powers except energy builders. 1 uses a melee the other uses a range energy builder. Tell me who will win.
I'd like to do whatever I want with my opinions, and I'd expect you to do the same, and I'd encourage you to debate with me if you're right. It's what I've always expected.
I am unfazed by what or who you wish to call "noob" as I do not have any issues with my own self-worth. However, others who do get insulted may retaliate in less pleasant ways.
I understand the purpose of your post. The purpose of mine was to confirm what you said and add a few things.

I should retract the word "complain". That was not appropriate use but it happens occasionally after a long rhetoric and some times such words slip up when one is sleepy. I have pointed this out in other threads before that there was never real balance to begin with and on-alert, legion gears, mods, devices, new powers are mere manifestation of this imbalance as the bar of the game gets raised.
I have no idea how long you have been in game so I am not sure whether you could remember pre-alert. I had a melee toon with LR, BCR+RR, energy shield and EotS. It did relatively well in ZA but the moment I brought it into BASH, it got ripped apart without even landing a strike. How was this done? Hurl, ER, PBR. You do not even get a chance to move close enough. Ever tried using regeneration in PvP? Same thing. This was all before on-alert, devices etc.
Wesley, Wesley, Wesley. You shouldn't be trying to reason with a wall, no matter how dumb.
It's sad but true. Some people are not worth the effort. As you might notice on other threads, Lucidity is demanding that I justify myself for one reason or another. What's to "justify?" lol...
Lucidity is a sad, pathetic fool who must be right always! A self-proclaimed "Queen of PvP" who has to lie about defeating people, who has to lie about their duels getting denied, who has to lie about how videos are getting edited frame-by-frame (lol wtf) to defame her (she defames herself), et cetera... Funny stuff.
I do so enjoy the effort she puts into her trolling. The amounts of posts she wastes her time on to defend her (again) self-proclaimed status quo as a top PvPer.
Ahhh... thank you Smoochan for the clarification. I would agreed totally in all your examples as to who is the best player.
However, I would like to point out IMO a flaw in your analogy.
Firstly, we are working on the assumptions that all fighters already have all the styles of fighting be they punch, grapple or kicks. In such a case, a kicks-only fight will be entirely balance (ignoring connection issues etc).
However, removing devices from a match is essentially not doing this. Let me attempt to give another analogy based on FPS although I do not play any since it makes me nauseous after 30 min.
In an FPS, there are a range of attacks and weapons, from punching, knifes, pistols, rifles, sniper riflers, SMGs, MGs, grenades etc. These are all available in game. What you are saying is both have decided to do a punching only fight. However, the removal of devices from PvP is essentially not that. It is more like, alright, I have a pistol, I am good with a sniper rifle hence let's set up rules and say we must not fight using grenades or MGs. Another player may not have the pistol or the sniper rifle and not everyone likes to use the pistol or the sniper rifle. In the same way, not everyone wishes to use AoPM, strafing run or 2GM.
Of course if we bring it all the way down to the most basic only punches on both sides and every other condition is the same then yes, it will be a fastest-finger-first and environmental awareness competition. To reach such a state, it is only possible if both players are using identical toons with no variations.
As I pointed out, even between a melee and range energy builder, there is essentially imbalance.
In this instance it is also not about the player who refuses a kicking-only fight but rather is this really a kicking-only fight or are the conditions just benefiting players who are using pistols and sniper rifles. Does that mean the other players will have to use pistols and siper rifles only? What about a contest that bars pistols and sniper rifles. Imagine what happens if we have a PvP tourney which for example does not allow perception gear? No money for guessing who will win. Or how about a no heals match? I am sure many ATs will be quite happy. What happens if someone plays an ER AoPM or 2GM Quarry build for PvP and the rules states that they cannot use range attacks. Certainly, the player can create a melee pvp build or easier, just not take part if he/she does not enjoy it.
If we wish to talk about the skills of a player then I guess the honour will go to the one who can use kicks only and defeat all the pistols, rifles, MGs and grenades thrown his way which we know is pretty impossible.
I hope no one takes this the wrong way. I also want to point out that I took the time to type out all this verbal diarrhoea in this thread (most apologetic for going quite off track) is merely for the discussion and I do not expect any outcome from it nor is it an attempt to prove someone right or wrong. In retrospect, my argument also has, perhaps to some, a flaw that most failed to point out which is 2 wrongs does not make 1 right. Just because there was no balance to begin does not mean that we have to embrace devices as a counter-weight. However, the attempt to balance is I would describe futile at best with the vast range of combination that CO offers. Finally, because the fact that CO is an MMO (a relatively easy one at that) perhaps we all should not take the PvP aspect of it excessively seriously which is perhaps why the Devs has chosen their current stand.
It is noble of kane to organise a tourney and I stress that he has all rights to determine if it is a kicks only fight, pistol/sniper rifle fight, no-holds bar fight etc. I am also fully in support of his effort.
to Kane:
If you need prizes I have some blood moon devices (alright, ironic I know) and quite a fair bit of acclaims unspent. If you need to farm some prizes I can help too.
We're not just talking tournaments without devices though. Reference the melee tournament recently for a good example. There were quite a few restrictions put in place, but that didn't cripple the good players; they adjusted and showed that they can still win even if they don't have their usual toys to compete with, be those toys devices or powers.
When I say "The usual BS", you have to admit that it's not being realistic if you think I'm only talking about devices.

Oh I think I may have missed that part on the "usual BS". You are right, players can then adapt based to those restrictions. I just wonder if we eliminate the "usual BS" whether new ones will arise. Anyway such once-off tournaments will not provide enough time for experimentation and testing for new BS to arise. But one thing though, having private tournaments with self-imposed regulations is certainly a vast improvement from the endless cycles of nerf cries arising from PvP.
Anyway, let's just agree to disagree on this because I do not foresee any substantial progression anyway and we are digressing from kane's intention. So kane if you need prizes just drop me a note in game and I will see what I can come up with.

I never disagreed with this statement, but I still think using devices in pvp is ridiculous, regardless of whether they be countered or not. You can value my opinion as little or as much as you like; the only reason I came here in the first place was to learn from all of you without making myself inferior.
I beg to differ. There has never been balance. Even when we bring it to the lowest level, do a duel with 2 level 40 toons with no other powers except energy builders. 1 uses a melee the other uses a range energy builder. Tell me who will win.
I'm not sure if what you mean about 'balance,' either "all powers are just fine" or "some need to be tweaked by others are okay," so I can't really comment on this.
I am unfazed by what or who you wish to call "noob" as I do not have any issues with my own self-worth. However, others who do get insulted may retaliate in less pleasant ways.
I don't think that it should be insulting to point out that people are using things that don't require much effort or skill, regardless of whether they can be countered.

There's nothing wrong with not clearly defining every little detail for me, after all it is my responsibility alone to understand what you meant, even if you decided to be 'naughty' and withhold a definition. It happens, and I write things in an unclear way sometimes, probably much more often than others. Again, I'll have to wait until I know whether "balance" to you means "all powers are out of whack" or "several powers definitely need adjustment but many are still okay or close."
Comments
Only rule in a pvp tournament should always be ringouts don't count as a win. All other rules are stupid and pointless. I'll do the tournament but won't follow any lame "no devices", "no stealth", "no travel powers", etc, kinda rules.
I do have a feeling this will end up being a bad idea but hey, not much else to do in CO lol.
Deliciously nutritious!
Damn, nasty.
Thanks for the info though.
Deliciously nutritious!
Champions Online: Be the hero you wish you could be in a better game.
It's really only something for people who really want to prove they're the best by showing off their ability to adapt and succeed under any circumstances... you wouldn't be interested in that though because
Champions Online: Be the hero you wish you could be in a better game.
I only snipe in first person shooters. 1 shot kills FTW.
Champions Online: Be the hero you wish you could be in a better game.
It was a battle of stuns and escaping said stuns. if you stood still for even a moment you are dead as they both had perception gear.
Thats just one example but logically ranged vs melee 90% of the time do not mix well.
Lol sorry, of course not haha
"Why get our hands dirty... when we can have the players get rid of our little... problem, for us? Mwahahahahahahaha!"
The plan is working!
Champions Online: Be the hero you wish you could be in a better game.
I'd rather get STO's level of lockbox suck if worthwhile updates come with it. -Buxom
Yeah, I didn't mean you were going to judge the tournament, I was just making a cute reference to the Saikashuu tourney.
If you get hit by the first one because the knock did not work, it may be a good idea to move away from the second and third one. However a lapse of attention leading to getting hit by a second or third would then be an issue of the player.
Bring it on KANE!
Looks like the Devs have the best build in this duel.

lol.. Sad but true.
Haha Nerf The Devs!!!! Rofl
Champions Online: Be the hero you wish you could be in a better game.

HANDICAP FTW!
Rewards? 1000g for the winner...just hand them to me already Xp
This is why I implied that I was just agreeing with you here.
I don't think I need to explain why PvP is frustrating to most people in this game.
This has nothing to do with moving away. This is about the probability of not being knocked while within range.
If your point is that there is no balance in this game, then I'll have to say that's incorrect, unless you mean the entire game as a whole. There are plenty of powers that are (or once were) fine just the way they are.
I'd like to do whatever I want with my opinions, and I'd expect you to do the same, and I'd encourage you to debate with me if you're right. It's what I've always expected.
I understand the purpose of your post. The purpose of mine was to confirm what you said and add a few things.
My post wasn't about complaints or the ability to deal with those things. My point was they throw this game out of balance and the amount that they throw it out of balance makes me consider them noobish. :P I still haven't given you a real definition of that, but that is beyond the scope of this thread.
I believe this has been the case for any new player joining PvP and has always been the case. It is a matter of their resilience and their passion to PvP which allows them to persevere and climb the steep learning curve.
But it does, because the point I am making here is that the NPGs are not that OP in PvP if players are alert to them and keep a distance. Just 2 steps and you are out of effective range.
I beg to differ. There has never been balance. Even when we bring it to the lowest level, do a duel with 2 level 40 toons with no other powers except energy builders. 1 uses a melee the other uses a range energy builder. Tell me who will win.
I am unfazed by what or who you wish to call "noob" as I do not have any issues with my own self-worth. However, others who do get insulted may retaliate in less pleasant ways.
Ahhh... thank you Smoochan for the clarification.
When I say "The usual BS", you have to admit that it's not being realistic if you think I'm only talking about devices.
Champions Online: Be the hero you wish you could be in a better game.
I'm not sure if what you mean about 'balance,' either "all powers are just fine" or "some need to be tweaked by others are okay," so I can't really comment on this.
