Well, yes, TOS was magnificent for its time, and having an episode written by Theodore Sturgeon (the very ep you reference here, "Amok Time") certainly didn't hurt (although for crowning achievement I think I'd nominate "Cordwainer Bird"'s episode, "City On the Edge of Forever"), but it still labored under the burden of being on NBC in the 1960s. There was even better waiting ahead, on Deep Space Nine...

When games like SWTOR with high quality voice acting, a huge wealth of story options, immersive que up team content and a freshly developed end game system to boot after hardly a year is F2P, well Champs is in trouble.
To be brutally honest, I hate most voice acting in games. When it is part of a solid cutscene's cinematography, I'm generally OK, but just random talking (Kevin Poe whining about being in a sewer) is unwelcome. I read far faster than that (or would, if I could swap in a nice clean font like I enjoyed for five years in CoH, and five years before that in FFXI). Worse, what the actors are saying doesn't match what the text on the screen is describing. I understand it is unrealistic for the voiceovers to handle $charactername and $nemesisname, but when the content is different, I get frustrated.

Coincidentally, he was sculpting faces, and to me at least, they looked worse than SWTOR's.
Eh, no game's character customization is going to please everyone. One of my roommates had dislikes about LotRO, ToR, GW2 and TSW. In CO, all of his (male) characters wear full face masks to get around his dislike for CO's (male) faces. He also disliked WoW's customization, but then I find there isn't much TO like about that game's character models.

All Points Bulletin had an amazing Character creator and i've never played EVE, but that one was supposed to be pretty awesome it's self. Granted CO and STO aren't that great in comparison, they are pretty awesome them selves as well as in comparison to some of the more limited CC's out there. DCUO's kind of sucks.... hard. TSW isn't bad and they got a nice little improvement, but it still needs some love. Lotro and TOR were just terrible especially given that GW 2 didn't really do a lot more, but did it in a way that made it seems far greater than the other two. If DCUO could make it's CC anywhere near CO's if not just out right better, they would easily be the better superhero MMO. Although at least in DCUO's case they're slowly still improving the game and CO is just in a poor state over all.
The article was definitely being nice, but at the same time honest. I liked it and feel that he was pretty spot on for a new player discussing the good and the bad.
...without the advantage of cell phone contacts...
This is actually one of my biggest complaints about CO, especially since there are no teleporters except the super-jet and a broken device.
The game also can't quite decide whether it wants to be action-based or not.
This is incorrect. I'm not sure if one can understand the combat system in 1 month, but 3 years later it still feels very "action-based," albeit more simplistic than most. What I liked about CO is that it was a nice casual break from the usual hardcore PC game, and it's not as casual as people tend to think. There's a lot more skill and thought involved than most people realize. I did feel some ambiguity about the storytelling though: not resting on comedy/satire or seriousness.
nothing is grotesquely overpowered or underpowered
This isn't true.
there's the fact that the game has no shortage of things to do when you get moving
This isn't factual. Everyone knows that we've been playing the same missions for years and at some point players realize that not enough content is added often enough to keep people playing so that the game can really take off.

Out of curiosity, what qualifies a potato as "low-grade"? And who routinely uses them as a sculpting medium?
Google found me a potato-sculptor, but he makes no mention of using low-grade produce in his works:
