That's not a problem at all. A Champion is a champion is what I say. lol

Well even if you don't have a strong backstory, awesome costumes can make up for it. And if that character in your sig is your in-game character, then holy crap.

He was flung into the middle and emerged into a new world. The magics had affected him and granted him the power to fly. As an example of how I'm not nearly as original as I thought I was, here's my take on the "girl superhero", Scorchy.

Short character background: Goofy 15-year old turned wannabe superhero. Over the strenuous objections of her over-protective mom, she used the Qularr Invasion as an excuse to quickly throw together a costume and live out her dream of being a real superhero. At least now she can use "Too busy saving the world" as an excuse when she's late with her English homework.

    In-game bio:
Heya, I'm SCORCHY! I'm a totes awesome superhero and-wait, gotta take this call. Mom, I told you not to call me while I'm doing hero stuff. MOM. Mom, I'm fine. I can set things on fire. No, the other heroes don't think I'm just some kid pretending to-MOM. I told him I was borrowing his bedsheet. Because I need a cape, mom, that's why, and it has FLAMES on it. DUH! No. No, Mom, for the last time, superheroes DON'T. HAVE. CURFEWS! Okay, I'll be home by ten. *sigh*

And some pics to show off my lack of Photoshoppery skills:
    Full costume shot.
Hanging out with her new BFF, Defender.
    Hanging out with Defender, redux.
I don't know why you're taking my photo, I'm not secretly some really wicked cool superhero.

    Costume notes:
In my defense, it's an "intentionally bad" costume. I was trying to get across the feel that she's (at heart) a goofy kid pretending she's a superhero, and thus her costume was pretty much thrown together in a hurry from what she had on hand when she heard that the Qularr had invaded and Millenium City needed any and all supeheroes to help.

Alright, everyone. Thanks for participating in my lowly costume contest. I am now going to go through all the entries once again and post a review of each of them in one post. I don't have to do that but I can't do anything else right now. lol

The top three winners will be posted a bit later after that.

    Mighty Pencil

The Eraser of Evil. A hero who can be number 2 and first-rate at the same time. Mighty Pencil. A villian's fate has been written on paper.

Possibly the only writing utensil-themed hero in the entire superhero MMO universe. I remember him way back in City of Heroes, and it is good to see a player stick with a very simple, but unique concept. Very surreal, yet entertaining backstory. The pictures are splendid, and I especially liked "The Sharpener". THAT was excellent.

    Lorelei

The Adolescent of Ammunition. A little catgirl with big guns. Lorelei rules the streets with an iron fist...well, metallic leg rather.

Very cute design with a vengeful concept. It is good to see young heroines fighting crime and doing it right. It doesn't matter what you are made of. What matters is the heart that you have within to protect and avenge the ones you love.

    Stan Steam

The Scion of Steam and Sorcery. Magic meets machinery with this guy. Stan Steam blows off some steam by keeping the streets clean.

Interesting concept. VERY interesting. Amalgamating magical elements to generate a steampunk theme is just amazing and extremely different. Super costume. It fits the theme and looks very good.

    Mark Johnson Hawkins

The Unending Enforcer. A disciple of military prowess. Hawkins may not have supernatural power or a bionically-structured body, but his determination, loyalty, and tactical intelligence makes him a formidable soldier on the field of battle.

Backstory = Deliciously insightful. There was no hesitation in detail with it. You made him more than just a drifting military man. The story of PLUTO/CORE seems really interesting, and I would love to see what happens with Hawkins with them. Costume is very fitting. It yells riot control.

    PsiLAN

The Psinergetic Psiker. A psychologist that not only studies the mind, but reads them. PsiLAN is all about mind over matter, because how robust you are against him won't matter at all.

The family connections were a great addition to his backstory. You did a good job tying his brother up with him, while still focusing on PsiLAN. Brotherhood and companionship are key elements in heroic structure. The name is really nice. The design is not too much and it is not too little. Muy bien.

    Constructo

The Titanic Toy. Playtime is over for villians when he's around. Constructo builds up hope while demolishing evil-doers.

Yes! More superhero action figures! The story really touched me. It's really cute, as well as Constructo himself. Great design. The use of bright colors helps to make him look like a toy. Thanks for taking the time to focus on a more kiddie, but awesome concept.

    Lonestar

The Relentless Ranger. With great might and a humble heart, Lonestar shines through the city, protecting the powerless and the weak as his predecessor before him.

This is a great example of heroic structure. You've created a hero from the ground up with disadvantages all around. Fantastic read. It wasn't linear in the slightest. When I heard the name "Lonestar" I expected a cowboy-themed hero. But you really surprised me and that is what made it so fun to read. Great costume. The pictures are very fitting.

    ARMOR

The Unbreakable Avenger. This knight in shining high tech armor makes other power armor users jealous. ARMOR is unstoppable. Impenetrable. Good luck trying to scratch the surface, villians.

Your writing style is great. It made it fun to read. I like how you dramatized everything while including a little bit of suspense with Dr. Foster and all. Very slick look on your character. You didn't abuse the average power armor look at all.

    Offender

The Carefree Crusader. Nobody likes this guy, but he doesn't care. Offender offends and defends. Drinks, then thinks. Whether the alcohol is doing the heroics or not doesn't matter. He's Offender.

Four letters: R-O-F-L. This was a big smack in the face when I read it. The presentation already blew me away, then when I read through the dossier I almost fell off my futon. This is WAAAAY out of the ordinary, and that's a great thing. The guy even looks like a tool, a well-designed tool. This is excellent, man. xD

    Vinven

The Assailant of Shadows. Too quick for the naked eye, and too sharp for the human heart, well except the hearts of the opposite gender. He can't get enough of the ladies. If looks could kill, Vinven would be a dead man walking.

Love the insight on the costume. Very detailed. You didn't just stop at having a dark assassin from another dimension. You gave him personality, and an idiosyncrasy to boot. Romance (or just plain out lust) can play an important role in a hero's story. This was implemented very well in Vinven's back story.

    Cecil Justice

The Revenant Revolutionary. A true patriot of true justice. Cecil Justice serves his country the old American way. Time for crooks to get schooled!

This was very funny and interesting at the same time. It's simple, yet I haven't seen a theme like this in the game so far. Our history is a fantastic one, and kudos to you for implementing it into a heroic concept. The character looks very fun to play with. Amazing look.

I will post the last 7 in a bit. Need a short break. lol

Nah, Glamuria should just be your next alt. A lemurian fashion model that uses her abilities to fight crime after foxbat interrupted one of her photo shoots, she has a temper and a list (and you don't want to be on her list with Foxbat). Maybe give her enrage with the growth advantage, the angrier Glamuria gets the hotter she gets obviously since there's more to look at.

SneakyCheeks was just looking into the future.

    Igneous

The Volcanic Vigilante. A hero of a burning heart that could melt steel into liquid. His sleek-coated skin only reflects the ugly mugs of the villains he's about to toast.

I adore the concept and name, not to mention the look. A very nice insightful backstory. The first-person narration helped to delve deep into the story. Somewhat of a diary, and gave me a feel of who the character was. Igneous reminds me much of one of my heroines, Cornerstone, who is actually made of obsidian. Same color schemes as well. Very good read.

    The Corpse

The Zealous Zombie. A drop-dead hero of the masses. Funky flesh in a funky suit. What can't kill him can only make him stronger. That makes him one tough guy.

I am almost speechless with the story of The Corpse. Very out of the ordinary, but extraordinary. I love the mix of theatrics and occultism. Not an overused combination at all. It's obvious that you put effort into. The story was professionally written. It felt like I was reading article of an actual person.

    Gouitsu

The Tempered Templar. A man of a fiery, blue passion. He doesn't tolerate evil, and that's bad news for bad guys. Just don't make him angry. You just wouldn't like him when he's angry.

Great story, and nicely written. Once again, first-person narration is always good to give more insight on characters. I practically know your character, and that's great. The whole manifestation thing was very uncommon. Instead of going the route of becoming angry and transforming into an unstoppable beast, you decided to add a twist with it using Coalition. The names are perfect for the theme and story.

    Mega Girl

The Princess of Power. There is more to this little girl than a cute face. Her knowledge in cybernetics puts professors to shame. Mega Girl has been doing her homework. Skipping a grade has never been so good.

She is so adorable. Instead of making her a complete power armor, you gave her only the arms and legs and maintained the cute, innocent look of the rest of the body. The interview was smart. You put the reader in the position of the interviewer. And very awesome graphic work. I actually feel like she is an actual commercial superheroine.

    Fat Sweaty Guy

The Gluttonous Geek. A greasy, (and somewhat unkempt) nerd who makes the epic decision of coming out of his parent's basement to save the world. He may not look much, but his robust mentality and appetite for hot pockets makes him a threat all around.

lmao. Oh gosh. I'm literally in tears. I don't have much to say but I am glad that you entered him because this is seriously some funny stuff. You've used the stereotypes of a simple nerd and turned him into the same thing except he's a hero. I apologize for the droll review, but I seriously can't go on. XD

    The Goblin Avenger

The Green Guardian. A heavy-artillery gremlin that won't take any junk from any mystics. You better be doing a card trick, sir, because the Goblin Avenger is here to inspect.

Really good design. Surprisingly enough I haven't seen much goblin/gremlin type heroes yet. I like the story, but I would love to see more about him. You can go a long way with his back story.

    Scorchy

The Searing Sister of Sassiness. She's hot, and she hasn't even reached her 16th birthday yet. Scorchy can be a hothead, and that's all right, because that is only one of MANY things that flusters her opponents.

Goofy indeed. Love the spirit of the character. I like how you made her just a casual teen hero. The mother phone call is classic. I love it. Kudos to you for making that step.

Give me just a couple of minutes so that I can get ready to announce the top winners!

Well, I've went through all the entries. I am pretty happy at the quality of the few contestants that entered into this lowly contest (yea I know I keep saying that.)

But alas, there can only be a top three. This contest was about concepts, and there were three concepts that really hit me the most out of all the others.

    Third place goes to:

    Stan Steam

What really hit me about this concept was the whole fire and water elements being used to develop steam. Not only did Saldan combine two elements, but he combined two categories together, magic and machinery. He went for a steampunk theme and did it. The costume is very fitting for the concept. I would be honored to make a signature for you of your tastes.

    Second place goes to:

    Igneous

Work was done with this character. Fantastic backstory narrated by the hero itself. It brought me deeper into who Igneous was. What I really loved is how you used the characters of Champions to help develop your character, and without breaking any Lore. Igneous looks fantastic. The name and look fits the concept. Kudos for conceptual effort, FractalSkye.

    First place goes to:

    Me!

    lol jk.

    First place goes to:

    Lonestar

The heroic structure is absolutely beautiful. I literally almost teared up as I was reading it. It started off so sad, and only got sadder, then you built it up and made him a hero. It's stories like this that really encourage people, whether it's realistic or not. Lonestar is a very good example of a successor in heroics. Very nice job, SneakyCheeks.

Due to the game not letting me login into the account server, I will try to meet up with you in-game to hand you your prize, SneakyCheeks. I'd keep trying but I must head out for work as well.

In the meantime, for the top three who wish to have their sig made. All I ask is that you take the necessary pictures that you wish to be edited for it. Poses, emotes, close-ups and all that good stuff. My graphics card isn't so great, so I wouldn't want to take your picture with it.

Once you gather all the pictures, send me a PM through the site. Also, let me know what you would like specifically down with the sig. Such as text, color, things like that. You can have one hero or multiple heroes. Just tell it and I will get it down. Photoshop is my baby, so don't worry about my precious time.

Thank you all for taking the time to post your entries. Everyone here is a winner. Imagination and creativity is a gift. I really hope you all enjoy Champions Online.

Excellent concepts from everyone indeed, that must have been a truly difficult decision and I thank you for choosing mine as one of the top 3. It was a pleasure reading everyone's entries.

To Maglama only, no one else read this part.
(psst. the money is in the mail, though for that much cash third place seems a little disappointing. But not sure I want to know what the winner paid in. ;) )

    lol jk

Ok, everyone else can read the rest, oh wait I'm done, nevermind then. Why are you still reading this? I said I was done. Have a good day now.

Seriously stop reading now, go outside and play or don't. I don't really care, it's your life, but exercise would do most of us some good, but like I said I don't really care. So stop reading now. So maybe I'm not done typing since I'm tired and bored at work on a Saturday. Fine I do care and love you all, is your self esteem restored enough to stop reading my ranting now? Shoo go away, but know that I love you all so be happy and well.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed that my Mega Girl didn't make it - but there truly were a plethora of amazing and top-quality entries in this contest. I can honestly say that I was proud to be a part of it! The effort that you put into summing up (and commenting on) each of the entries goes beyond all practical duties that I expect from a judge - but you did it, and kudos to you sir!

I do sorta kinda think you put more weight on the backstories than the character's designs themselves, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I just wish that I knew that the backstories were actually going to play that big of a role in your decision-making (and I don't envy that decision; this was a hard contest to judge). That way I would have put more time into my backstory...

Ah wells - congratulations to all who won! I'm looking forward to the next forums contest you hold Maglama! :D

    Big CONGRATULATIONS to the winners!

I didn't have time to read through all the bios but Maglama did a good job of summarizing. I'll be bookmarking these threads to read the whole backstories to these characters when I have time.

And also, I'd like to say that Maglama, you have a great writing style, and you made all of the bio summaries fun to read. I'm very serious when I say that if you don't have a job in writing right now, you should look for one. You just won the "I WRITES GOOD!" award. :)

Thanks for doing this contest, I look forward to seeing more of these from you!

Thanks Maglama!!! This was a very fun and interesting contest, despite my not placing :)

Loved getting a chance to read the results of people putting a bit of time and thought into their character...
Seems too many people just hit the random costume button and use the most popular backstory out there... "Please wait..."

And I did gain something from doing this... I finally found a power to take as ARMOR's first non-energy builder. Tried a lot of different versions of him since launch, and there was always something that just didn't feel right, but putting the Tech Specs report together, it finally clicked. Lash. I had always used Swinging as a travel power (the concept of a winch/cable system attachment), but had never considered adapting a second one as an offensive weapon. And it will cover Iron Lariat as well... (Just wish I could modify the graphic of Swinging to a chain, or Lash to a cable... so they would match :) )

And it's got me back into ARMOR. I had stalled out on playing him because of slight off-feel. But he's up and rolling again (I think this may be ARMOR v121.62 by now). I've got some new and improved ideas and definately gonna have to work up a new Tech Specs Report (that was throw together quickly after work with a few bad screenshots)

Thanks again for doing this and the kind words. And Mega Girl, great read and concept...

Wowzers..when I entered this contest I didn't think I'd make it into the top three much less first place..espically after seeing so many other player's with such awesome back stories! But I am very excited..its not very often I win contests ^^...now I'll have to get busy on taking more snapshots. Its a good thing you couldn't log in last night..because I was at work til 10pm anyway lol. Before I end this post I want to say...awesome job to every one who took part in this..I really enjoyed reading each and every single entery..and it got me thinking about back stories for some of my other characters.

    Congratulations, you lucky duck.

This was a real swell contest. I never bother entering costume contests, since I keep a lot of my characters pretty simple and classic comic book, and I always assume flashy folks will win... but I do think about their stories quite a bit, and I enjoy other people who do as well. It was rad to have something that considered that.

Next time I'll hopefully be able to provide more subsidiary material. And read a ton more from you folks!
