DCUO is being run by SOE which means it will suck, even if the game is awesome SOE will suck the life out of it and ruin it, guaranteed.
That of course doesnt mean CO will be an amazing success either, but DCUO will suck mark my words.
Well I have been following DC on line since day one. I haven't seen anything to suggest anything about whether it will suck or not. It's stil in pre Alpha isn't it? They can remodel the entire game almost between now and launch if they want to. Also, for those who are talking about content, DC has been in developement a lot longer than Champions was and release isn't in sight yet.
I don't understand the non fee paying funding base. I don't know if that will be good or bad.
What I do know is that if, against all the expectations on these boards, DC online IS an immersive MMO, it will wipe CO and CoH off the map.
It's like playing a a football (sorry to americans) MMO that has made up teams, then suddenly a developer announces you can play in the "real" pemier league. The first game won't get a look in.
DCs brand is a thousand or more times as strong as Champions pen and pencil.
is it as strong as star wars? the matrix?
POTBS swore up and down soe wouldn't touch their game.
vanguard...
the list goes on and on, much less mentioning how much was screwed up/ignored in the station pass games.
defending soe, tbqh, makes it sound like someone hasn't played MMOs for any appreciable amount of time. or, has very low standards.

It's beyond Pre-Alpha - attendees at this year's SOE Fan Faire were able to play it a bit.
Yeah, I was an SOE customer - I actually enjoyed SWG even after the NGE - but finally had enough 2 months ago, ironically AFTER the FF - because the Devs from other SOE games were making fun of SWG - and the SWG Devs thought it was great.
Go figure - losing a customer by not defending their own game...
*eyeroll* Wrong. What I've been saying all along is that DCUO is targeting an entirely different market than an 'MMORPG' by specifically labeling it differently. Which has a huge factor in who will actually be playing that game.
What you keep going on about has nothing at all to do with what I'm saying. The main thing that CO will have RPwise is its playerbase.
How exactly is it labeled differently? There both labaled MMORPG's................... There both in fact Super Hero MMORPG's. There both going after the exact same market.
There both targeting MMORPG players that like the Super Hero setting. There both promoting the action which is what a Super Hero MMO should be promoting. As far as the comment "The main thing that CO will have RPwise is it's the playerbase." ........... that in no way shows how CO is geared more towards being an RPG than DCUO. Keep in mind you stated that DCUO will be lacking in the RPG side where CO does not............
The Guild Wars model has proven successful and Guild Wars 2 is on the way and it is one of the most anticipated MMO's currently.
DCUO seems to be going with the Guild Wars model. Free to play with several expansions.
In the end DCUO's success or failure is unkown.
What is known is that CO isn't doing that well at the moment. People have ran out of things to do, not all maybe but enough for it to be a problem. This is the largest problem CO faces right now. There are other issues with the game, but this is the biggest. Casually the game can be completed in a few weeks. First part of this that should throw up warning flags is the fact that I said COMPLETED in a few weeks, thats a console game not an MMO. The second part that should throw up warning flags is the fact that it can be done CASUALLY.
If CO gets it's act together and irons out the problems and gets a good bit of content in before DCUO comes out then IP might not matter much at all if at all. CO has to be the better game to compete with the IP and the Guild Wars Model.
If CO can't get the content in before DCUO comes out and can't get the other problems resolved.......... well it really won't matter about IP then either because CO is already bleeding subs.
In your sense of COMPLETED, the game can NOT be COMPLETED in a few weeks. There's a ton of perks, pvp , and pve, costume unlocks etc etc.
Is there a need for more content, more lairs, more pvp games etc. Yup, not a single person in their right mind can deny that. However, the game can not be COMPLETED in a week or two. Getting to level 40, yes but thats not completing the game. If thats the case, WoW can be completed 1-80 in a couple days of powerleveling, same goes for any MMO on the market, so might want to rephrase that.
The only SOE games I've enjoyed were Everquest , YEARS ago, and SWG pre-nge, everything else they have ever laid their hands on is and has been ruined, including the two games I just mentioned. So yeah...I stay well away from SoE **** em. Only thing I'm looking forward to in any type of future is the old republic MMO and I'll probably still be playing this and that.
I mean where else are you not pigeon holed into lookng EXACTLY like every single other person in the MMO, besides CoH(which I didn't like what so ever for the 2 months i played it) and hell, just look at my el guapo, that alone make pvp more fun than it actually is .

Its like you're reading things only in your head. Like I said on my very first post you responded to, DC is labeled as a 'Massively Multiplayer Action Game.' Not an RPG.
Hence, its labeled differently than an MMORPG. Is that confusing to you somehow?

Considering everywhere I've looked it's called an MMORPG......... yeah it is a bit confussing. In some discussions it's said to be a Massively Multiplayer Action game as is CO, but just like CO its officially labeled an MMORPG...........
The current (COH) and upcoming (DCUO, MSS, and MSH) superhero game wars are not for Cryptic to win, but rather for them not to lose. Right now CO's action/twitch play style is different then COH's but Paragon Studios has them beat handsdown on game content, invention choices, and many other aspects of the genre.
I've never taken a character to 50 in 2.5 weeks of regular play following story content in COH. And even once I got one to 50 I still knew there were hundreds of story arcs I'd never experienced yet for my next few characters. In CO it's basically the same story chain over and over.
CO is out but it needs more. More of everything. More power framework, more power choices in frameworks, more costume pieces, more zones, and far more mission content. After the tutorial I should have 4 or 5 different crisis zone choices, and once out of the crisis zones I should have 2 or 3 different mission paths in each open zone. No one should need to follow Crisis to 8, Desert or Canada to 14, Millennium City to 20, etc, etc, etc.
I just don't see City of Heroes and DC Universe Online surviving. Champions Online is a far better game then City of Heroes in every sense (expect you can play villains). DC Online won't be a real MMO (No monthly fee). Sure you can play villains but its just a shooter game in tights.
I just don't see any competition for Champions Online.
I had to add that COH you can actually create more than 8 characters. So right now to me COH is better than CO.
The thing with CoX is they need more new content = things to do... ZONES!!! New Zones with New storyarcs!!!! And I mean ALOT!!!!
Because that would be cool... cuz like... i prefer the gameplay in that game over what this game is offering.
I am BURNED OUT on CoX... and am waiting for Going Rogue....
This game is aight, but is like bare bones of a game. Once you do everything 1 time it loses flavor like a 5yr old piece of chewing gum. This game needs about 1 more zones with complete content in each one to be better and less linear.
Considering everywhere I've looked it's called an MMORPG......... yeah it is a bit confussing. In some discussions it's said to be a Massively Multiplayer Action game as is CO, but just like CO its officially labeled an MMORPG...........
From the Gamasutra interview linked directly on DCOU's Site:
You call this game a massively multiplayer action game, not an MMORPG. Where's that distinction exactly? It definitely seems to share a lot of the more traditional MMORPG traits.
WY: Our combat is a visceral action game. We want it to feel more like a console action game than a traditional MMO. That's to deliver on that superhero power fantasy. When you push a button, you throw a punch. If you push a button several times, you throw a combo of attacks. You hit a bus and knock it down the street, or you can pick up objects and throw them at your enemies and they get knocked back.
It's that feedback loop and that connection to your character that's really important to deliver on that power fantasy. It's that action and reaction. You do something with the controller, you see it on screen with your character, and something else happens in the environment as a result of your character's actions. I think that really pays off on that power fantasy.
After giving CoX a try, I wasn't clear on how it could survive even without CO in the picture. The game bored me to tears (well, not literally).
If DC does PvP right (and I'm not sure it will since I've cared exactly 0 about that game) it will certainly do well enough for itself.
But honestly, CO has a bumpy road ahead as well. The framework is there for a good game, but it needs fleshing out. PvP needs an overhaul or something. As of right now it's really just become a cesspool and unfortunately its a cesspool you have to wade into frequently if you want something to do at level 40.
First post on the boards but wanted to add my 2 cents.
I've played D2, EQ, GW, CoH, WoW and other non-RPGish games.
One thing which has really kept me playing CO even with the lack of content is the fact that if I want, I can solo just about anything in the game on one of my characters. I don't want to be forced to group to be able to accomplish things end game. There is a reason that even today, Diablo 2 still has people playing which CO can capitalize on. Unique character builds (fireclaw druids?) combined with the ability to solo for top tier gear. Before folks start jumping on me about "well this is an MMO, if you want a solo game go play X", let me finish. I have raided enough and been forced to group enough (3 years of EQ) that I can appreciate the idea that it's at the very least more challenging to organize a raid vs soloing.
So why not take a page from the D2 book? If you want to raid or group, you have a better chance at higher end loot dropping from X boss while if you decide to solo grind, it may take you longer but you still have a shot at it. I wouldn't care if I was 50 times less likely to get the high end piece I'm seeking as someone who was raiding for the same piece as long as I still have the chance to get it when completing some lair or farming some token for it BY SOLO MEANS. This doesn't me I don't/won't group, I just don't want to be forced into it once again. I don't believe I'm alone in this respect either. I'm more than willing to keep shelling out the monthly fee so long as I'm not once again forced into grouping for the best gear.
DCs brand is a thousand or more times as strong as Champions pen and pencil.
is it as strong as star wars? the matrix?
DC is far more powerful as a brand than Star Wars, the Matrix combined.
Maybe not Superman or Batman seperately, but add the grosses those two have taken at the cinema, then add all the others, like the tv stuff (smallville) the comics themselves, the merchandising.. they far outweigh even Star Wars. Matrix doesn't even begin to compare.
And, in terms of branding, Champions isnt even a gnat on DCs back.
So when you fail at bashing the game switch to the company?
Sorry currently I don't view Cryptic in any better light than I view SOE.
CO is fun, it's an MMO action game. The combat is fast paced and fun, kind of like AoC's. The lack of content hurt though, and there is a severe lack of content. The fact that they tried to fix this by slowing down the pace of the game didn't do any body any good. The constant large sweeping changes aren't helping either.
CO at it's core is fun and I hope Cryptic can get there act together because the fun is there even if it's slightly stunted and hidden right now.
Bashing DCUO for the same things that CO is doing or bashing SOE for the same things that Cryptic is doing doesn't really do anyone any good lol.
It's survivability hinges on if it can fix the anti teaming state of the game, the severe lack of content and so on and so on.
I'm confused how my saying what you quoted equates to me STARTING to bash SOE for the ongoing masochistic orgy that is it's Station roster. As far as I and those that actually know me can and do attest...I never stopped.
I just don't see City of Heroes and DC Universe Online surviving. Champions Online is a far better game then City of Heroes in every sense (expect you can play villains). DC Online won't be a real MMO (No monthly fee). Sure you can play villains but its just a shooter game in tights.

I think they'll be just fine. Between Station store and being a PS3 game (I've got a big screen TV just itching to be used for gaming) DCUO will be good to go.
Co* has a solid enough following that they'll survive.
Since we are all different and have different tastes, posts like this are stupid imo.
I honestly dont understand why any of you wouldnt like CoX.
I just dont get it. Teaming is DONE RIGHT in that game.
To each their own, I guess. But really... alot of you make no sense.

Still won't change anything. It still will suck just because it is a first person shooter and no monthly fee (which mean very limited new content).

I have my questions if CoH will survive. However, I am eagerly waiting for DC Universe Online. I like the art style and graphics better than CO and I'm hoping they will learn from CO's launch. I don't know why people hate SOE so much but my history with MMO's isn't as long as others. I do know that they really improved Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, which is a very good game.
A bit of refference for you............ CO was originally Marvel's MMO. They bailed on it and a representative from Microsoft said it was because it would be unable to compete in the current MMO market. The game wasn't even finished.......... so what did Cryptic do? They took the Marvel MMO that wasn't even finished and spent 18 months basically reskinning it.
Marvel signed on with another Developer to make there MMO.
So this in essence is the Marvel MMO without the Marvel lol.
As for Cryptic being the only company to create a profitable Super Hero MMO, you are correct as Cryptic is the only one I know of that has made a Super Hero MMO.
DC's first MMO attempt is DCUO, Marvels first attempt was with Cryptic but....... seems they didn't have faith in Cryptic.
Just saying lol.
So Marvel is still planning on making an MMO? I didn't know that. I knew DC was, and I was aware that Marvel dropped Cryptic in 2006. Good to know, thanks. Any idea as to when Marvel plans to launch?

Marvel is making 2 MMOs. One for their Marvel Superhero Squad cartoon and the second is their Marvel Online game. The shop making them is Gazillion Entertainment. You can probably follow their site for more information about launch.

Going to be a while before we see the Marvel MMO. There doing the Super Hero Squad game first or at least it's the first comming out. Fall of this year actually. The Marvel MMO we likely won't even hear much about till about mid next year.
Still won't change anything. It still will suck just because it is a first person shooter and no monthly fee (which mean very limited new content).
Maybe I'm not getting it, but from what I've read on DCUO on this thread, how is CO different?
It's essentially a "first person shooter, or "action-oriented multiplayer game". Click buttons at whatever pace you can, interact with the environment, challenge levels of enemies aren't as varied as in a standard MMO (people in high 20s taking out level 41 critters while solo smacks more of an FPS than an MMO - may be different for DCUO, but that's how it is for CO). No real need for interaction with others in the community, except to do certain Lairs and take out Legendaries, which also may be elements of DCUO.
Given this and that you appear to support CO, why the hate for DCUO already? The fact they're not charging a monthly fee?
I don't get how you can knock a free-to-play game without having any clue as to what content will be in the game to start, let alone released over time. Even if they required you to pay $50 to get to the level of content you wanted, that's still the same as CO. And then if to keep getting content it costs you less than $15 a month, you're paying less than CO. And quite frankly, CO still has to prove they're going to deliver enough content to justify a $15/month fee going forward. Here's hoping Blood Moon delivers, but Isuspect most of what's added content-wise is going to be event-oriented and not remaining afterwards...
As for COX, it handles teaming much better than CO does. Even when CO adds the mechanisms to improve teaming as they've indicated, it'll help manage a team once you have it together. That still doesn't give you challenging team-oriented content to go after. Still, add some adjustable difficulties and lairs that are accessible for teams before the high 20s, and it's a step in the right direction.
I'm hoping both CO and DCUO do well. Anything that helps this genre break out of its niche into a more broad area of interest should be considered a positive. While there are exceptions, superhero movies as a genre has benefited from mainstream interest...

And i dont think you grasp the idea of an mmo, the main point in playing them is to TEAM with others online now aside from a few 5 man missions you dont need to team in CO and lets be frank your better of not teaming anyway seeing as how you get huge monster lag while teaming, oh and lets not forget you cant share missions .
Cox is a great team game as you need all members to fill a role while as champions has every member filling each role on there own.
So maybe you should think about such bold statments and not get ott over a game that only one month old cox has been going for 5 years after all and unless alot of work is done on champions i doubt they will make it that far.
Dc and GR for cox will hit champions hard imo as alot of the player base for champions is here from cox and lets face it dc will already have a huge player base from fans
Still won't change anything. It still will suck just because it is a first person shooter and no monthly fee (which mean very limited new content).
This makes me laugh, you think a game that isnt even out yet will be a first person shooter how do you know it will "suck" and lets look at CO using your logic it fits more into the section of an RPG rather than an mmo so getting players to pay each month to play an rpg sucks imo i
Indeed the 'Roleplay 'part. DC purposely divorced themselves from that aspect of these types of games. That gives it a heavier console focus than CO that keeps those elements. Which means to me it will feel more like playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance with a Costume creator.
Like I said they're purposely shooting for a broader, yet shallower market than the MMORPG crowd. Which will make playing it pretty painful to say the least.
From a discussion with the DCUO folks at comicon, they claim that their game will not rely on a random number generator. So hitting a target is just a matter of twitch instead of a comparison of attack vs defense and a "dice" roll. They claimed that a sufficiently talented lowbie could take down a max level mob.

Thats actually all I tried pointing out when I hop'd in this thread.
Someone tried to say DCUO will suck because it's developed cross platform for PC and PS3
But....... CO was developed cross platform for PC and 360
Some harp on the fact that DCUO is free to play with 3-4 expansions a year at 30 bucks a pop which would totaling at most 120 bucks........
CO is pay to play at $15 a month with 1-2 expansions planned a year........ thats at minimum 230 bucks lol and thats with 1 expansion..........
Some wanted to bash DCUO for being more action game than RPG.........
CO is the same exact thing...............
Some want to bash DCUO because they might have an item mall.......
CO already has one and it's a pay to play game.............
This makes me laugh, you think a game that isnt even out yet will be a first person shooter how do you know it will "suck" and lets look at CO using your logic it fits more into the section of an RPG rather than an mmo so getting players to pay each month to play an rpg sucks imo i
I have been waiting for this.
Its pretty simple. ALL FIRST PERSON SHOOTER GAMES GIVE ME SEIZURES! So they all suck cause I can't play them (unless you count 30 minutes every 3 to 5 days). Plus to me there hasn't been very many good first person shooter games, imo.

Lets reverse those expansion. DCUO might get 1 free expansion in a year. CO has already announced 4 content expansions a year (thats one more then there old game). One is already coming in less then 2 months.

Ok so thats not good news for you, maybe what your OP should have been about was not tha CO is beter than cox and DC that isnt even out yet you should have said i like champions as is a good game for me to play.
That would have saved 10 pages of why you were wrong in the first place , as for cox dc and champions only time will tell , lets wai until dc comes out before its hung out to dry.

Just so I can add something that might really be of value to this thread...
Do shooters give you seizures, or is it a nausea-type thing? I have some friends who couldn't play shooters for more than 20 minutes before they'd have to stop, but then they bought some wristbands, meant to impact pressure points (I think they're used for seasickness/motion sickness). No problems since - Left 4 Dead was their test game and the bands made a world of difference.

Updates are all well and good but unless you have a solid base to update from its just patching up cracks with shinny paper.
Lets say that DC only does get one update a year that will be all they need if they have a huge amount of content to play with on launch and lets face it unless there dum i bet they will its not like they dont have 60 years or so of back content to work with.
One update a year seems to work well for WoW it all depends on if that new content is good .
No I don't. Will CO have more content then DCUO in a year? Yes. WIll DCUO have as much content as CO when it came out, when DCUO comes out? Probable! Will it be a sucky first person shooter? YES!
i got to play this game at comicon in san diego this year.
it's not a first-person shooter.
targeting is point-and-click or via the TAB button. just like in any other MMO.
did some pvp--heroes vs. villains and it was a lot of fun.
there were various roles each character could play that allowed him/her access to different powers (offensive, defensive, etc.) very much like in CO.
combat was briskly paced without being a one-shot gankfest.
movement was not suppressed in combat unnecessarily. the feel was very comic-booky. very action-oriented.

I was just waiting for someone to ask.
So far not to many people have argued that DCUO will be a bad game or not (except for those who just hate sony). I had high hopes for DCUO then they said it will be twitched based with no to hit rolls. At that point in time they had a 50/50 shot (you can play villains which gave it a plus). With the announcement of No monthly fee's it won't be a good game then. So it really doesn't have good odds of it being a good game.

All you guys loving coh i don't get? It's an empty shell as everyone power levels in 3 days to 50 lol,and some say this game is too fast too lvl!
everyone? not really, lots of ppl like to play the game doing story arcs, TFs or even radio missions but if some want PL, well the game give them this option.
Even with a lower population i still team more in COX then in CO, so the empty shell is kinda relative,
Took me 4 months to get my first lvl 50 in COX (playing only one toon) while i got my first 40 in 2 weeks (while playing lots of toons), so yep the game is too fast too lvl

DCUO's model calls for 3-4 expantions a year at about 30 bucks a pop and was something others felt a need to critisize.
As far as CO goes lol, I won't be holding my breath on those 4 expansions a year........ they spent 18 months on Champions Online........ they couldn't even finish this game so I doubt they have expansions ready to go lol.

Looked finished to me a few weeks ago as well. By finsihed I mean many people have already hit 40 and seen what the game has to offer and there simply isn't anything beyond that.

But what can you expect I guess.
Hmmm, I still remember CoH being level 40 for the first 3 monthes. Guess the people that got to 40 must of finished that game to.
Finishing a game doesn't mean making it to level 40. Thats Rushing through it.

Not when you've completed all the content lol. That 40 in a few weeks (meaning 2-3) by the way was a casual pace. If I were to rush it like some others I probably could have done in 2-3 days.
But hey........ what ever floats your boat man lol.

Problem is, you can't blame people for that - MMOs of late have taught people that End Game is the only important thing, that rushing through Content to get there is good, because THEN they can get to the goodies.
CO is trying to break that mold, and sadly is failing because people are rushing to the end without stopping to smell the roses.
This is much more an "Enjoy the ride" game than a "Hurry and get to Disneyland so we can ride the rides" game. But just because what I typed is true doesn't mean people will slow down - it's almost a conditioned response by now thanks to WoW and the like, where a secondary (And more fun) game awaits at the highest level.

This battle is only Cryptic's to lose.
I had to add that COH you can actually create more than 8 characters. So right now to me COH is better than CO.
From the Gamasutra interview linked directly on DCOU's Site:
I can call a Cow a penguin, but if I still label it a cow it's a safe bet that I still consider it a cow.
Well, that made total sense...
Wut?
If DC does PvP right (and I'm not sure it will since I've cared exactly 0 about that game) it will certainly do well enough for itself.
But honestly, CO has a bumpy road ahead as well. The framework is there for a good game, but it needs fleshing out. PvP needs an overhaul or something. As of right now it's really just become a cesspool and unfortunately its a cesspool you have to wade into frequently if you want something to do at level 40.
Alrighty then...With that I step away from this discussion.
is it as strong as star wars?
I'm confused how my saying what you quoted equates to me STARTING to bash SOE for the ongoing masochistic orgy that is it's Station roster. As far as I and those that actually know me can and do attest...I never stopped.
I think they'll be just fine. Between Station store and being a PS3 game (I've got a big screen TV just itching to be used for gaming) DCUO will be good to go.
Co* has a solid enough following that they'll survive.
So Marvel is still planning on making an MMO? I didn't know that. I knew DC was, and I was aware that Marvel dropped Cryptic in 2006. Good to know, thanks. Any idea as to when Marvel plans to launch?
If you think Blood moon is going to fix the content problems it won't, sorry to burst your bubble... it will however provide a small bandaid.
Going to be a while before we see the Marvel MMO. There doing the Super Hero Squad game first or at least it's the first comming out. Fall of this year actually. The Marvel MMO we likely won't even hear much about till about mid next year.
Edited to Add: Seems Cosmic beat me to it :P lol.
This makes me laugh, you think a game that isnt even out yet will be a first person shooter how do you know it will "suck" and lets look at CO using your logic it fits more into the section of an RPG rather than an mmo so getting players to pay each month to play an rpg sucks imo i
From a discussion with the DCUO folks at comicon, they claim that their game will not rely on a random number generator.
Doesn't make a lot of sense........
One update a year seems to work well for WoW it all depends on if that new content is good .
i got to play this game at comicon in san diego this year.
it's not a first-person shooter.
targeting is point-and-click or via the TAB button. just like in any other MMO.
did some pvp--heroes vs. villains and it was a lot of fun.
there were various roles each character could play that allowed him/her access to different powers (offensive, defensive, etc.) very much like in CO.
combat was briskly paced without being a one-shot gankfest.
movement was not suppressed in combat unnecessarily. the feel was very comic-booky. very action-oriented.
i'm curious to see the game when it's finished.
So it really doesn't have good odds of it being a good game.
yep, i think the same
I played it also. Its a shooter game.
DCUO ain't a first-person shooter.
everyone? not really, lots of ppl like to play the game doing story arcs, TFs or even radio missions but if some want PL, well the game give them this option.
Even with a lower population i still team more in COX then in CO, so the empty shell is kinda relative,
Took me 4 months to get my first lvl 50 in COX (playing only one toon) while i got my first 40 in 2 weeks (while playing lots of toons), so yep the game is too fast too lvl
