Custom Passives

I like passives a lot, they really help me define the character I am building and conceptualizing. Hoiwever, when building with themes, the outward appearance of passives can sometimes clash with themes.

For example, a melee dps character of mine, Kraken, is a character highly inspired by themes and appearance of DC´s Lobo (Not the New 52 version for heaven´s sake!), essentiually a badass, space biker mercenary with a foul motuh and passion for violence, with some tentacles in his face. Normally, the character uses Way of the Warrior as its passive, since I think it prodives the best bonuses.

However, the theme of Way of the Warrior fits very badly with the character since "Way of the Warrior" is a term for a code of ethics (Bushido) that embodies virtues such as honour, self-control among other similar concepts. In a superhero setting, such virtues are desired but for a character like Kraken, it is unbecoming and frankly, cringeworthy.

The obvious response to this is of course "Just pick Unstoppable then. Fits much better thematically right?" and yes, it would. Still, I don´t believe one must pick a passive one does not want simply over a theme dispuite and thus, there could be an alternative.

Let´s go back in time a few years. Back when passives and certain auras were inseparable. When we were given or chose a passive, there was always an aura attached to it, even if we liked it or not, and it could not be shut off. Now, we can choose any aura for our passive, or none. This gave us much more freedom in conceptualizing the themes and aesthetics of our characters. I think we should try go a step further and give passives another modicum of customiuzation.

In short, my suggestion is this: Allow us to change the name of our passive as well as its icon. Technically, let´s say a 50 character space for naming (same rules as for writing description applies here.) and selection of icons from ALL (present and future) power icons, spec tree icons and device icons. The changes can be done anytime and a "reset" button is always available to restore the passive to its original state. I must stress that this suggestion is not proposing that we can create new passives with new mechanics, but rather change the aesthetics of exsisting ones, to better suit our chosen themes. The internal mechanics of exsisting passive will remain the same.

With this, one could change their passive to perfectly reflect the thematic idea they have in mind for a character. For example, instead of the ill-fitting Way of the Warrior, my Kraken could rename it to something like "Brawler" or "Dirty Fighter" and perhaps change the icon to that of the Haymaker Power icon, which would make the passive fit like a glove. Another example could be renaming Aura of Radiant Protection into something like "Forcefield Generator" to give it a more tech/force theme instead of magic. The possibilities are, dare I say, virtually limitless.

Champions Online is a game that prides itself on customization. I dare say it´s the number one MMO when costumization is concerned. One can create essentially anything with the resources available and I think that any effort towards expanding that costumization is a plus. Now, if this is even techonologically feasible I am not certain, but I think it´s a suggestion worthy of notice.

Thank you for your time if you read and considered this suggestion.

You could just not worry about the name and icon.
If you are into roleplay, just roleplay the power any way you wish.

Shouldn't this renaming include all the Power then.
Also, it's not going to happen. Considering the work behind it to actually make something like that to happen and the work that's currently directed towards CO.

Auras and power tinting exist now for a reason. Most passives aren't even required or tied to any theme anymore and practically any passive can be made to fit any desired theme or effect you might have. So there is little need to rename a passive just because you don't like the name. You can mention that the powers you use are to represent the powers you want them to be in any sense of role play that people will care about.

As far as theme-building is concerned, the name of passives, forms, energy unlocks, and other such things isn't important because nobody really sees them ICly. Only the bonuses matter.
(Hopefully) Useful CO Resources: HeroCreator (character planner), Cosmic Timers/Alert Checklist, Blood Moon Map, Anniversary Cat Map, and more (eventually, anyway).

Yeah nobody is gonna look at your tentacle person and go "That's a samurai!"

I'm heavy, HEAVY into theme building, and even I think this is a non-issue. The names of the powers are utterly unimportant. They aren't really a "part of the game", just a reference for the actual RL player.

Not even if he's wearing a kimono and katanas?

Not even if he's wearing a kimono and katanas?

So long as he doesn't have an icon for the "I am literally a samurai!" passive emblazoned on that kimono.
