What is CO to you?

Everybody enjoys CO in different ways. Each person has a different experience, something that makes the game mean something to them. I was thinking back over the years I've played, and I've realized that CO, for me personally, is like a video game version of an Arnold Schwartzenegger movie. Sure it's stupid, campy, goofy, and poorly acted, but it has a unique charm that always makes me remember it fondly, and always makes me want to come back for more of it's cheesy goodness.

So what is CO to you?

Internet Barbie Dressup with a superhero theme.

Coming up with assorted builds can be fun, too. Yup, that about sums it up for me I think.
(Hopefully) Useful CO Resources: HeroCreator (character planner), Cosmic Timers/Alert Checklist, Blood Moon Map, Anniversary Cat Map, and more (eventually, anyway).

Ultimate character costumization, with some super hero elements, Yeah but sorry I DON'T play this game for Super Heroes, Super Heroes were hardly part of my childhood (despite i love Batman the animated series, Spiderman and Justice League cartoons)

Call me Degenerated all you want, but the customization is what kept me for 5 years ingame

This is why I dont consider my characters as Super Heroes but just HEROES, which works more in different themes

The character tailor will never stop to be exciting for me
It's the only game that allows me to create and PLAY as my characters, big variety i may add, Humans, Fantasy creates, Robots, Anthro animals (I'm enjoying non human characters more, they are just more interesting to draw)

as a wannabe webcomic artist (who is on Hiatus for 3 years) I love designing characters and making stories

There is something really charming by being able to play as my childhood fanmade character I made for Medabots when I was 12 years old

and thanks to CO, I made even more characters, at this point I have more 150+ OCs

also the FreeForm system, I'm having fun making and figuring out new theme builds to fit my characters (despite the revamps keep screwing with them and changing their battle styles) I build for both theme and Efficiency, im zig-zagging between Casual and Hardcore

I really don't care for super heroes at all either, aside maybe iron man, none of my characters are heroes either. It's about the customization really, and that's about it, nothing else has that level of customization.

A medium on which I can express with symbolism and play.

The main reason why I stuck around all these years is because CO gave me something that no other games have, being able to represent my Dragon Family both with accurate appearances and with relative skills/powers, applying them ingame, now despite limitations, circumstances, build despairity and personal struggles, I still do enjoy playing regardless, even more so that the game is getting some much needed attention the last few years, I feel like I'm a bit closer to them as I play. :3

Want to get to know me a bit better, Click me and take a read of My Dragon Profile Page, it's a bit dated but still relevant.

I take this quote from a review that I agree with.

"customisation is so linear; everyone is after the optimal dps:survivability ratio with 0 reliance on other players = autonomous gameplay... Players don't need each other anymore... which in my opinion is a bad thing."

I think it's awesome that people who really don't care about superheroes can find joy, and entertainment, in a superhero game. It's a real testament to what Cryptic has created. Not the best game in the world, yet still so good, people who don't care about the premise can still enjoy themselves. This game has become something more than just a superhero MMO.

Honestly, as a long-time PnP Champions player, I can't help feeling like Champions Online is the red-headed stepchild of its source game. CO hasn't utilized very much of the IP's tremendous potential, and what the devs have adapted is often changed from the original, visually and story-wise. Some of those changes I believe add something to the setting, but I question the necessity and wisdom of others. The emphasis on magic in so much of CO's content isn't the case for the source material; nor does PnP Champs make humorous pop-culture references with anywhere near the frequency, or blatancy, that CO has.

All that doesn't mean I consider Champions Online to be a bad game, or anyone who enjoys it to be "wrong." But knowing what it's taken from, I find myself thinking:

Well, i also love the customization in CO, adn the fact i can make so unique characters. And, a not so obvious reason i love this game is the comunity (yeah, you guys XD), it's crazy and sometimes weird, but friendly enough to make me fell "part of the familly"

From my experience, CO is a part sandbox/part theme park/part cosplay where I can "dress up" as personal characters and go on adventures to get some respite from RL. It's also a way to connect with people even for a brief time who are on different locations in the world while duking it out with thugs or Cosmic beings. It's a power trip but also a social tool. And the gameplay is action packed enough without it being a mash fest (the blocking mechanics is particularly simple but effective). There's just a sense of freedom (despite the actual limits) that no other MMO out there offers. You can be what you want to be and the game isn't going to say "no" (just "Yes, within certain boundaries/mechanics).

I don't want to be the umpteenth Paladin with a big-**** shield, and even bigger shoulder pads with a Warhorse. I want to be a Paladin with an energy shield with a BFG that shoots plasma, spin kicks mobs, heals using conviction, has Raptors as pets, rides a flying Train, and fights King Kong or Godzilla (or their thinly veiled pastiches) alongside Captain Ballerina, Anime Girl #24501, and a Furby with a giant laser sword.

I love designing characters and making stories.

Yup. Creative amusement in a non-hardcore game play environment. There's always some new variation to play through, something new to make. And I love the silliness/absurdity of the setting, how it plays with genre tropes and cliches... the people who designed it knew that the best Batman was Adam West (or Will Arnett, I can't decide....), not those brooding twits being Really Really Really Really Serious.

I like to think of CO as a canvas I can paint on. New characters and stories waiting to be created. It's also nice to see what others can make. A lot of creative potential to play around with both for the serious and the silly in an environment that is adaptable to many.

For me CO is all about the character design and the RP with other players. The game itself is kind of meh, not terrible, but nothing that would interest me for long. Character design is the selling point and so it boggles the mind that this is what CO isn't capitalizing on more. They should strive for a new zen store costume set every month or even every week, pricing should drop on all but the most time consuming sets, free costume slots and new characters slots should be given out as some kind of silver loyalty program. The prices should be dropped on both free form and regular character slots. Getting people to spend money on this game keeps it afloat and I'd think the best way to encourage spending is to get people to spend on what a large number of people are saying that they like about the game.

A game that I get great fun out of forgetting about the real world for a few hours. Allowing me to create a play a superhero and/or hero based on my own concept (be it original or homage) from start to finish that's actually part of the world not just a sidekick in a fast paced, (mostly) non complicated combat system.
  • jonesing4jonesing4 Posts: 803 Arc User
Pretty much a costume creator, nowadays. When I actually play these days, it's doing cosmics or alerts to grind for GCR/SCR so I can unlock costume pieces. I used to enjoy creating new themed builds, but the grind for gearing alts has become prohibitive (and when you're grinding you can't use more than a couple of alts), so my enthusiasm for that has diminished to almost nothing.

Still has the best costume customization in video games, and I love superhero stuff, so if it keeps going, I'll probably be around for another 6+ years, disappointment notwithstanding.

To me, Champions Online is one of the last of its kind; an MMO with full content access for all players (aside from level restrictions), generous character creator and in game account item access. It is the only online MMO that I am aware of that does not require players to purchase and download separate content in order to play it with the basic game. I can play this game without looking at a content pay wall. Many costumes and items are account bound, which makes it easy for a new player to start building up their collection and an existing player to create alts. Despite the recent changes in the game, it is still easier to create and maintain an alt in this game than in most others.

It was a joke...this community needs to lighten up and learn to laugh. Its the ones who cant see a lighter side to things that overshadow. Ive been bending over backwards to cheer people up and encourage everyone i can. Why would you think i was depressed and kicking stones??

Ive always said people flee in terror from me...those who arent too shy to team and talk with me in game, get to hear all of my bad puns and lolcat jokes. So I always jest that they flee in terror from me, and cryptic employees are wanting to shoot me for my bad jokes. (Bad acts at a comedy club...management would toss em out, the cane, the shoe, etc.)

...anyone here picking up on it yet?? <.< >.>

...ill admin, my sister is better at puns but a bad pun is funnier for me because it gets the best response from my victims! XD

The only Supers game around, I <3 anything superhero and probably know more things about supers than a grown man should. I tried DCUO and while it has plenty of new shinys, CO beats it hands down on customization. I still think about moving on over to DCUO every now and then-- but CO draws me back.

i play DCUO when I want to play a more populated game, with more new and updated content. it is really nice to feel that once in a while, but 2 things always bring me back to CO. DCUO's horrible deal for free/premium players, and not being able to really make and play the characters I want like I can in here.
I do enjoy DCUO's battlesystem much more than this game's though. but i was never into DC comics and lore to be honest XD
also, to me, CO is the game I have to be constantly reminding myself, that it is the game it is and not the game it could be, or that I would want it to be.

I imagine your just making sport of me again. I really do think if you find me so contemptible on the level you stated in that anti-trump thread, we really should leave one another alone until your hatred for me passes...but ill try and be more clear, incase others didnt understand ether:

Im inviting anyone who would like to get to know me better, to join me in the game. I do not have a chip on my shoulder about how one is geared, what items they carry, nor their standing with others in the community. I am in fact neutral and impartial, not being apart of any SG other then my bank one (because im a hoarder) you will enjoy your time better if you have a sense of humor. But due to my running shtick, you may hear both bad puns and lolcat related jokes among the ones I tell during my daily login sessions, so just be prepared if you find them to be beneath your tolerance for humor.

The game with the best build variety and character customization of any MMO I have ever played. I love that characters here are not limited to a class. It makes each character feel unique instead of just all being the same, and it lets you be creative with your build.
