There are four other people in your group who run the dungeon and some of them are hoping to get some EPIC items to sell on AH. Just saying.
Old Epic Dungeons
PUG = Need if no one says anything. Greed when agreed before starting the run.
LFG = 99.99% Greed
Guildmate & Friends = 50% Need, 50% Greed run, depends if they help you or want to farm.
New M/C,
Just tell everyone you will need on your Class drop on Epic and no one will complain since it is BoP.
Bottom line, everyone are playing this game need ingame currency and not everyone has access to Plastic Cards.

So? Are you really so selfish that you will deny me an epic sword I can use, so you can sell in the AH for a bit of money? Are people really that greedy?

LFG and PUGs are mostly the same thing. If you use LFG, you are picking up strangers to fill up your group - basically making a PUG.

If i know you personally i would gladly give it to you, but since i don't know who the heck you are, ill just find someone else to run the dungeon with thesame idea as mine.
If it's an upgrade i need i'll hit need like i've done in every other mmo i have played. If i have the piece or it is not an upgrade i will greed.
You can basically do whatever you want with the roll, but most probably the party will be disbanded and you will be put in Ignore list of 4 other people, and that would be bad on the long run since world will shrink day by day.

- Greed party = Greed
- You need an item? Say upfront if playing with pugs just to avoid some people pointing you out as a ninja looter.
- Nobody says anything? (haven't encountered that yet..) NEED
Personally for me: shared profit runs. Of course having an item on your own (20% chance) is more profit. But I rather have 100% chance on 50-300k AD then a 20% chance on the drop if all greed.
for me i choose Greed all the time on occasion i choose need,
but mainly greed, because i think the hole thing is broken.
why i think its broken is because i never get the loot
no matter how many times i hit need.

Same here. I don't like the idea of Greed or need. I vary rarely get the items i need and because i can afford AH i buy their. I think it just crazy how the rolls go and most of the time it seems to go to the same individual who gets most of the items. And when i am in group i just pass on Purple. But need on enchancements.

LFG and PUGs are mostly the same thing. If you use LFG, you are picking up strangers to fill up your group - basically making a PUG.
I wouldn't say that - with LFG you have at least a chance of starting out with a group of like-minded individuals - you can say beforehand that you want an "all greed speedrun exp only" or a "full run, inexperienced people welcome" or whatever - there is a certain level of control. with the PUG queue system you have no control whatsoever - you just get grouped with 4 strangers, which may or may not share your ideas oh how to run a dungeon.
What's wrong with you people? It's "Need" if it's something you can and will use on your character, and "Greed" if you are going to just sell it or park it in your bank or give it to an alt. It's been that way since the first days of EverQuest. It's quite clear just from the words. Need is for need. Greed is for greed. How is that so difficult to comprehend?
People do not communicate upfront and really do not even talk during a group. They zerg into traps while they are being disarmed and they just are impatient in general. In addition most people need on everything so I have even stopped even thinking about it. If I have a need option I hit that quick key.
I am still in the leveling bracket of pugs so I am unsure if new rules are in place in the upper tier but I highly doubt it. Ask if you want when you start but if no one says its greed before need then need away and ignore people who get upset.
Good point reiwulf. You might have to decide within the group how to handle unidentified items. I'm not doing end game dungeons yet, but I'd be surprised if this came up much though. I would expect most high end loot to not need to be identified, and most players to already be equipped in gear good enough that they wouldn't need anything that requires identifying.
Anyone able to comment on how much of the unidentified stuff in end game dungeons is actually useful and/or upgrades for people?
With friends or guild, I only need if it is an echant I will use or the piece of loot improves my equipment.
Edit: do not forget that there are also people that likes to collect sets although they do not use them at all times or items to change the appearance of theirs.

That's the kind of attitude that makes doing dungeons with pugs horrible.
I find the system relatively fine as it is. Could it be improved, surely. But there is so much more in this game that is much 'worse', that there are more bigger fish to fry than I have inventory slots.

I need on runes/enchants/mats and any epic gear that's for my class that I can use. (if i'm the only one)
I never greed on anything unless its an epic for a class that's not in the party because everyone else will greed on it anyway.
I pass on all green/blue and epic gear except if its an epic for a class that's not in the party.
I think its funny though, the one idea I haven't seen thrown out is the most easiest idea to solve the whole need/greed problem. If its not for your class, you cant get it. That would solve everything, no more people crying about why you needed instead of greeding, or crying because you greeded on an item you cant use blah blah blah.
BTW, are people really getting upset over blue items? From what I've seen its hardly worth the effort to even post blues in AH since they hardly sell and they drop more often from random mobs now.
That's the kind of attitude that makes doing dungeons with pugs horrible.
But why?
I haven't really done that many T2 dungeons, mostly Pirate, FH and Karr. Almost always everybody needs what drops for their class. Little ever drops for me anyways so I'm not going to give what little means I have of making AD to another class just to be generous.
If I was up there enough to do CN/MC and we laid out the ground rules that we're going to split the money of whatever drops then that's fine with me. It's all about trust.
You guys can argue this all day but really you should be addressing the developers for making dungeons the only real form of money making in this entire game.

It's a vicious cycle, really - people quickly learn that they have a higher chance of getting a valuable item if they select "need" - whether they actually need it or not. Thus, people start choosing "need" as the default, if it's a possible option. Other people see that, and follow suit. In only a short period of time, "need" has mutated to mean "I want this item" and "greed" means "I'm ok if someone else gets the item".

I would almost prefer a Round Robin rule to replace the need/greed system. I find it really demotivating when the same person wins 2-3 boss items on in a full greed run. I'm not sure how greed exactly works, but it just doesn't feel random to me. I've had plenty of CN runs and other dungeons and some people just tend to win more often than others in a greed run. In a need run it just feel a bit more fair when jewls drop, I don't know why. However, like some pointed out, the rules need to be set beforehand so that there isn't confusion on the rolls in the end. I've had plenty of "oops, srry wrong button." moments which happen in both guild and pug runs.

Personally, I think the loot modes should be:
1. Round Robin
or
2. Want/Pass - everyone who chooses "Want" gets an equal shot at the item, and everyone who passes simply doesn't get a shot at it.

LOL.
And that's why you are stuck in the LFG-queue, while the rest of us run the dungeon for the fifth time.
Technically, when you use LFG, you are still picking up a bunch of random strangers, thus creating a Pick-Up Group. Or PUG. Some communicate better than others, but a PUGs still just a PUG.
So roll Need on all the money and ADs you want. That still doesn't give you the right to steal my weapon or armor, if you are a different class. You're rolling on the item, not the potential money you can get for selling it. Surely even you can see that?

If they are a different class they can't even roll need on your class' item. In fact a lot of people have made mention to other classes needing... that's not possible. If a GF item drops then only GF can need, all other can only greed. If you want to have the best odds at getting gear and are a TR or CW then just make sure you are the only one of your class in the party, other classes will already be the only ones. Then you have a 20% chance for your class' item to drop, which only you can need.
The boss has an equal chance of dropping each class' item so each of you already have a 20% chance of the drop being yours, why randomly all roll greed again when the game has randomly generated the loot in the first place? The only player that this helps is the class that there are 2 of (and there will be cause no one wants GWF heh) and those classes also have easy times finding groups as they are more needed.
