"An incorrect message that stated you could unbind companions has been corrected."
Q: Can you unbind companions?
A: No.
Q: Does the quote above state that there was never any intention to facilitate unbinding?
A: No.
Q: Does the quote above state that this will never change?
A: No.
Q: Are you reading between the lines and getting overexcited by your own unsubstantiated and dubious conclusions?
A: Yes.
LOL
"Q: Can you unbind companions?"
A: No. Because the implemented system (intentionally written and included) was broken. The original "message" in question was not "incorrect" and it is not being "corrected". Rather it is being outright removed. Hence, if this is a "correction" then it implies the feature was never intended to see the light of day. Fair enough while the game is in beta status. However, it has now been officially "live" (read: officially released) for quite some time, making this "omission" (removing the feature visibility) a serious oversight on Cryptic's part, if it was "never intended" to be available. Presumption: they changed their minds after the fact, making a right a wrong.
Q: Does the quote above state that there was never any intention to facilitate unbinding?
A: No. However this feature was presented as a "selling point" regarding Z-Store Companions. Face the logic.
Q: Does the quote above state that this will never change?
A: No. Granted, as typical as such might be, I'll give you this one. However, what changes is based on user feedback, hence this thread.
Q: Are you reading between the lines and getting overexcited by your own unsubstantiated and dubious conclusions?
A: No. I think not. It is simply a plea to Cryptic to make the requested change, nothing more and nothing less.
I proffer it is you reading "between the lines. in the OP, as it doesn't appear you have followed the thread. And there's nothing wrong with this, we all do it time to time.

I think everyone who has been around this game since the start knows it was well advertised that a feature of this game was that you could level up a companion and "box it up for AD", then sell it on the AH or transfer to an alt. When the feature wasnt working after closed beta 4, and then into open beta, many folks began asking when it would be fixed, and they posted that they were responded to by GMs and such that it was a known issue that is being worked on. Obviously I cant display their trouble tickets or in game chat logs, but yah know...this isnt exactly one or two people just misinterpreting something. If they are not going to implement this in game, then they need to refund zen store companion purchases because I dont know of a lot of people who spent 30 bucks on a ghaleb dhur, or a honey badger thinking it would be for that one toon only. You always felt like if it didnt pan out, you could resell it later when they fixed the issue. This is turning out to be a classic bait and switch.

Lets not forget this being sneaked into the patch notes for 15 August on the preview shard under user interface.
"Mail: When attempting to mail a bound companion, the mail no longer claims that the companion may be unbound."
Looks to me like they are quietly trying to implement this change. How many sales would be lost if people were aware that the companion they are purchasing can't be unbound later and sold or transferred. Companions are crappy at level 60 unless you have an augment companion. People want them for levelling, and then want to recycle them to an alt or sell to someone who wants it for levelling. Make them sellable/transferable or refund money.

I wish people would read the forums before spending so much money. I spent 90 bucks on this game. The guardian pack (fora amount ,wolf, and 600000ad) and 30 bucks on character slots and a bag I thought was account bound(thank god I only spent 10 bucks on that). It seems like people spend tons of money on this game with no planning and then come to the forums to complain.
Zen store bags aren't bound at all. I have several of them that I mail between my characters depending on who's seeing active play, and I'd be able to auction them if I chose. People sell them on the AH all the time (at a markup from just converting ADs to Zen and buying it yourself).
Re: changing Zen store companions to account-bound
While I agree that overall this could be a good change, and completely in line with how mounts are implemented across the game, people who have bought multiples of the same Zen store companion (mostly the ioun stone) would be getting the shaft.
Presumably it could be based on transaction logs who can claim multiples from the Zen store. There are a fair number of companions floating around out there where the owner bought it on the AH from someone else who bought it at the Zen store.
That said, people who have been buying Zen companions specifically to auction would suddenly have access to a whoooooole lot of pets they have no interest in using.

You're still reading far too much into this. You cannot unbind companions, the message said you could. It has been corrected however you want to look at it. Fact.
Q: Does the quote above state that there was never any intention to facilitate unbinding?
A: No. However this feature was presented as a "selling point" regarding Z-Store Companions. Face the logic.
If the answer was yes then you might have had a point, but it was no. They didn't say it, why are you getting your knickers in a twist?
Q: Does the quote above state that this will never change?
A: No. Granted, as typical as such might be, I'll give you this one. However, what changes is based on user feedback, hence this thread.
You need to read all these points and put them together to get the main point. I broke it up into bite sized section for people with poor comprehension. I clearly failed.
Q: Are you reading between the lines and getting overexcited by your own unsubstantiated and dubious conclusions?

They updated a message to reflect what currently exists. They have NOT claimed it wasn't intended, they have NOT said companions will never be unbindable; of course you're reading between the lines.

So there will no longer be an incorrect message? /hands a tissue

The only reason I thought you could unbind them was because it said I could in game. Until they change it so that you can unbind them the best thing to do would be to remove anything that suggests you can unbind them when you can't. Then players wont buy companions believing that they can be unbound.
Whether they should be unbindable is a different matter. I would be a good feature.

I think this is more likely due to some sort of a technical hurdle. I think that they probably always intended unbinding to work but that there was some difficulty getting it to function as desired. Now, the game is out, priorities have shifted and the fix for this keeps getting pushed down the list.
So, since the fix is getting less likely to happen any time soon they have removed all mention of it from the GUI. And this IS a correction because even if they intended the feature to work it shouldn't have been visible in the GUI until it did.
There is nothing sinister going on here, no bait and switch. It simply didn't work, was removed from the GUI, and may or may not ever come back around on their to-do list. They wanted it to work too. They took several stabs at it during Beta. After all, a percentage of all AD used to unbind would come from the exchange using ZEN so it's good for business. They can make money selling the companion and then a little more every time that companion gets traded.
Semantic pedantry aside, the code certainly seemed to indicate that unbinding was in the works but then the company says it was never intended.
I understand the OP’s adherence to the letter of the logic and I can’t really fault that. But consider the source. Some bad code from this dev team is like rain in monsoon season. It is so embarrassingly frequent that it becomes hard to blame them anymore. Exploits spilling over every wall, AD tumbling from nowhere, duplications, speed tricks, infinite skill hacks, gateway hacks, a plethora in its truest sense and at some point one must just feel sorry for the holders of those development offices. Certainly they are deeply overmatched for the tasks of this game.
Maybe there really was no intention to do this, maybe the code was just a remnant, a bit of clutter from the halcyon days of people with ideas. But it, like the establishment of manually picking an instance from dungeons, has been cleared out.
And not surprisingly, Cryptic stands to make money if you have to buy a new stone for every character. And if they release a new class, hey that’s a new set of things for you to buy. I think it is an unworthy gambit, cheap and somewhat low. But there is money to be made and to many that is a sacred endeavor wherein the ends justify any means.
However a new crop of players will be coming with the expansion and the upcoming class addition. If enough of them don’t care about this then the outrage is just a wash and we all go forward, business as usual.
Looking to river the apathy card Cryptic? Eh… it’s a decent bet.
PS – Please offer suggestions and tips for the dev team. Intellectual alms for the devs. It can only help.
This is just another shameful tactic in a long list. I bought quite a few of these companions on my first character to test them out. My intention was to figure out which ones would work best with certain classes and then move them to my alts when I created them. I knew I would have to pay to do this and I did not care. Now I have one character with tons of useless companions and I feel like I was ripped off.
Bottom line is I will not be buying any more companions from these crooks. As soon as I realized I enjoyed this game I became a paying customer and I made frequent Zen purchases because I chose to do so. Now I chose to no longer support this game. I will be locking up my wallet and I will play for free until the game ends or I move on. I assume I will be moving on shortly because I can clearly see the direction this game is headed in with all the changes we will be seeing in a day or so and I no longer really look forward to logging in anymore.
