Reduce Refinement Items

oldbaldyoneoldbaldyone Member Posts: 1,840 Arc User
I think it is about time to reduce the amount of refinement items that are in the game, or make storing them somewhat easier. If you count up the number of refinement items (multiplied by 3 of course, since they can be BoA, BoC or Unbound)...the number is staggering for what should honestly be a small part of the game. Last I counted it was over 160 items, and it appears they just added more with the CN drops.

If you insist on the "Refinement" process, which it appears you will, can you make some sort of RP Storage device? Said devices could store RP for use at a later time. For example, "Enchantment Refinement Container" could store any enchantment specific RP (thaum stones, enchantments, etc). Generic RP container could store pearls, peridots, etc. Put the cap high enough to be useful and allow players to use only some of the RP if necessary. Put in a penalty of 5% RP on it if you wish. Better yet, make it a "stat" on the player riches tab, eliminating the inventory entirely.

This would instantly reduce the number of items players need to store...a welcome additional to the game seeing as we just got an entirely new set of things to store (insignias).

The mount system was entirely redesigned to allow people to not have to carry mounts. While I love the new system, I believe the storage impact was pretty inflated (how many people had THAT many mounts?)

Yes, I know bags won't sell themselves, and if that is the underlying reason for the lack of attention to this really annoying aspect, so be it. That said, people have personal guilds with all slots unlocked, mailboxes full with refinement items. I bet over half the items in the world database are refinement...stacks and stacks of refinement items...just waiting for the new artifacts that will inevitably come.

Help us out :)

Much simpler suggestion: Reduce the number of binding options - make all BtC refinement items BtA. Then we will have just 2 versions instead of 3.
    Hoping for improvements...

And stop selling bags? no i don't think so. also pw or cryptic are on serious finantial problems for sure. That's why we have a new mount system, to make players buy mounts wich are zen only.

You can always buy zen with AD!!!

I like the idea of a "refinement score". When I pick up and item that can be used to refine something, I get an option to add it to my refinement score. This adds the refinement amount to a running total on my wealth tab. We would need to have multiple scores, 1 for general, 1 for artifacts and one for artifact equipment. Adding an item to the appropriate score takes it out of inventory. When you want you can apply part or all of your refinement score to items. If you are applying artifact score points to an artifact then you get the appropriate multiplier, if not then you get the normal points. During 2x weekends you get 2x the amount you apply.

You should still be able to trade the applicable unbound and BtA stuff. That way you can trade it between characters on your account or via the AH or whatever.

If necessary put a tax on placing the item in the refinement score of say 5%, as suggested above. In order for Cryptic to make money on it, make it a perk for rank 13+ VIP.

Alternatively, give high ranking VIPers access to a Refinement Vault which is like a bank but has slots that hold refinement items. Start out at level 1 vault holding 20 slots of items. The sell extra slots or give them as additional VIP perks.

its not just the MATTER of space, its a matter of how convoluted and time consuming finding the correct RP becomes at times.

Its just mind numbing , and REALLY annoying.

making super annoying features.. never helps games.

That is why I am suggesting the Refinement Score mentioned above. Your points are all in one spot.

If your issue is not storing the refinement items but having difficulty finding them in the first place that is a different issue. The OP here was talking about making storing the items easier. That is what I was trying to address.

Or maybe your issue is with finding the correct ones to apply to a specific piece of equipment. This is somewhat addressed by having the drop down that displays the items you have that can be applied to that piece of equipment, but can still be a bit cumbersome when you have multiple bound types. My solution of a Refinement score would also alleviate that issue. You would basically have 3 sources to apply points from (each of the refinement scores) and depending on which item you were applying it to and what refinement score you were using, appropriate multipliers would be applied.

I dont mind searching for refinement when the time comes.Problem is I cant find other stuffs that got mixed up with them.I found winter event fish bait from 2015 in last 2xRP.I t was sitting cozy between peridots and aquamarines.I wonder what else sitting on other toons

I agree with the idea of removing all character bound versions in favor of account-bound. Then, there should be a way to force unbound RP into being account bound as well, in order to aid in stacking if desired - perhaps an account-wide RP "bank" would be an option. You store potential refinement "energy" across your account and can deduct it to create arbitrary sized refinement bits. So, you have 10m RP stored in your RP bank, but need exactly 8214134 RP to max out some item - no problem, you create an RP token for that exact amount and viola.

You'd need two separate banks, one for gear and one for non-gear types of RP.

If you want to sell your RP, you can do that for the unbound ones, otherwise you can store it in your account's refinement bank. I envision a UI not that unlike the gold or t-bar controls.

I was able to complete the Wanderer's Fortune insignia bonus on the weekend. It popped out two account-bound union stones and I promptly disabled it again. I don't even bother to save the character-bound ones and just use them routinely to clean them up, but I don't need more junk to fiddle with.

I've been pondering what new twists could be made.
"It is worth 2500 Refinement Points at 3am on a Wednesday, but far less at other times."
"It is worth 2500 Refinement Points in Icewind Dale's PvP areas, but far less elsewhere."
"It is worth 2500 Refinement Points for bound enchantments, but far less for unbound enchantments."
"It is worth 2500 Refinement Points on most Artifact Equipment, but far less on Lostmauth's set."

Refinement ended up being the straw that broke the camels back for me. Too many refinement items and a completely crappy system. I love the Forgotten Realms setting but I'm pretty much done here.

    This.

For those that were around, the current system was supposedly introduced to REDUCE the quantity of refinement items everyone needed to carry around. At least that was the bill of goods they sold us.

There is simply no need for all this extra refinement junk.

Anything that is involved in the refinement process can be used for RP. Got stacks of 99 things socked away that you don't see a need for, feed them to something.

Currently there are following refine point types:
    artifact x3
    enchantments - x15 ish..
    enchantments - universal x1
    artifact gear - x1
I think best solution would be to introduce some zen-buyable refinement storage, where you can feed all your different types of RPs. Of course they will be stored in their corresponding type (e.g. 1000RP radiant enchantment, 10k RP for artefact gear, etc)
Then you use these RPs directly from RP storage to refine items with same rules as now (using radiant RP on radiant enchantment gives 2x, while using silvery RP in radiant gives x1, etc)
RPs in storage should be account-wide, no matter what you feed to it.

Why zen buyable - it will have some value to develop it, as zen ~ real money for devs. It is also not something 100% needed by everyone - you can fully play game as it is now. Still it will significantly decrease time spent on managing inventory and allow this time to be used to actually play the game. And finally, after buying few horses, there will be nothing else to buy with zen anyway :)

@magenubbie I couldn't easily find that post, but when I wrote it, probably a year ago, I think I counted 200+ different types of refining stones and marks, when you included binding status.

There's just no reason for it. It's not fun. It doesn't add to the game. It in no way creates more excitement.

I proposed that we eliminate all the refinement stones, and stick with the gems. Pearls, Peridots, Aquamarines, etc.

I do like the idea of the "shattered" items dropping in dungeons as much more valuable loot drops, so I'm fine with that.

But along with that, eliminate the union, power, stability stuff as well. Just make artifacts simply artifacts. Honestly, not going to waste a lot of words on it. I've already typed out posts hundreds if not thousands of words long on the subject over the last 2 years.

Two major systems that need a "mount style" overhaul are Refinement and Costumes/Cosmetics. I'll just leave it at that.

Your presenting a solution for a problem that shouldn't exist.

There is simply no need for all these different refinement types. They add no value, fun or anything to the game.

@ironzerg79 suggested something similar a while ago. Shame I can't find the original thread anymore. It was a good suggestion, as it this one. But I doubt it'll come to anything. They want us on that refining treadmill as much as possible it seems.

It was the refinement thread I created some time ago. Or at least, references to his proposal can be found there. Unfortunately, the forum search on the subject only goes back to September 2015.

EDIT: Found it. Here it is: http://forum.arcgames.com/neverwinter/discussion/552461/discussion-how-can-the-refining-points-system-be-improved-going-into-mod-6

Right now me fully endorses what last year me wrote. Last year me seems like a pretty swell guy, and we should all listen to him.

Now me? The jury's still out on that guy.

It is a good sign that most of the old seals have been condensed to the new single adventure seals. This may be a good sign for future refinement? ...wishful thinking

I would be happy with a quick fix of larger stacks greater then 99, the task of the refining takes for ever selecting each stack one by one:(

Making refinement items and even enchantments stack to 999 would be a welcome bandaid for the time being.

All in all, seems like a dirty way to sell bags and bank slots. I would say that "anything" would be better than this, but I wouldn't want them to consider it a challenge to make something worse.

Must of referenced both that thread and IZ's thread at least double digit times now, when improving refinement has come up....

It will never change cause of the monetization method tied to the refinement process. The current business model just wont allow it.

But either way, +1 to Ironzerg for the suggestion. We can pretend.

Edit: as far as reducing the #. I think the forum has agreed about 20 times now since they started adding more and more RP types/binds a year or 2 ago. AND SOMEHOW WE ENDED UP WITH MORE... ... ... ... ... ... ... .... ..........................................................................

Maze Engine added Demonic Enchantments, but still no new bags or even any new tier quest for upgrading the bags or bank slots.
and they made it worst with mound insignias flooding inventory bags.
that is pure thoughtless of them.

each new mod should have a newer bag updates.

PLEASE NO....10000000 TIMES NOOOOO. We don't need new bags for more inventory...we need the same number of bags with less stuff cluttering it for no reason other than to sell MORE BAGS!
