How does one obtain man-at-arms so I can run the leadership task to earn adventurers so I can then run the task that produces a hero? I can only seem to find these in the AH at straight up ridic pricing.
I bought 4 in the AH at ridunculous prices thinking it a one time purchase and had no idea they were consumed when running the task. (dumb dumb dumb design)
So spending 200k AD (4 x ~40k) to run one frigging task is a definite no go.
They are a chance-win in the Professions Assets pack; Zen Market. So unless you buy that pack from the Zen Market the only way to get them is through the AH or the one single Professions Asset pack you get as a quest reward in Neverdeath quest-line.
Other than this you can stay with the white "basics" and level up your assets to Footman (this is the highest rank of the basic white assets for leadership) - they also are often in the AH, but they run out pretty quick (sell really fast) - so you can look for Guards (4 Guards to make a Footman if I remember right).
You will need Footman to do the higher level tasks, like farming AD at level 20 and surely for the even higher levels when Mod 6 drops next month.
Profession Asset workers are not consumed in tasks, unless you're doing the task that upgrades 4 lessers to a greater version.
Which is the same if you are upgrading mercenaries to a guard and guards to a footman, even if you don't decide to buy the faster ones. Smooshing your dudes together to make a better one. Ick.

More like Thunderdome. Four men enter one man leaves.
Even a crow knows that if four guys go into the woods and one comes out, there are still 3 guys in the woods.
Man-at-arms were 20-30k for a long time... prices on green/blue/purple leadership workers are all up probably in anticipation of the level cap increase to 25.
Leadership is always going to be Time Intensive.
You need to make a total of 9 R1 Assets and 9 R3 Assets.
Each R3 Asset requires 4 R2 Assets to make.
Each R2 Asset requires 4 R1 Assets to make.
So to get a full compliment of 9 filled Slots:
9 R1 + ((9*4 R1)*4)
Or 153 R1 Crafters total.
Then rank up your two's and three's.
It will take a while, unless you have multiple toons cranking them out and ranking them up.

You only have 9 profession slots, and R3 assets can do the R1 tasks.
Speed boost, which can be a bonus R1 asset even on higher tier tasks.
Shaving a little time off a 12-hour task gives you more grace for getting them changed over to always fit in two rounds per day.
It's moot if you're buying man-at-arms or better, but if you're setting up entirely with dudes you've hired and trained yourself, it makes a difference.
