Why new areas can't have strict restrictions...

Now that Icewind Dale is out, it's time to look forward and wonder what's next. Personally, I don't care where we end up. What I do care about is actually getting there, and for that to happen, the devs need to understand something crucial: It can't be too restricted. Max level is fine. Increasing the level cap and requiring us to be lvl 65 is fine. But boons etc? No can do.

It's really simple when you think about it: Many of us have been to Dread Ring and Sharendar already, and many of us are bored to tears of those two areas - and we don't even have the three boons required to get to Icewind Dale. What, then, if the next area requires us to go to Icewind Dale and get our Black Ice Gear first? Think about it:

1. If we have one character, we can grind the hell out of Dread Ring for two weeks to get our boons, somehow get our GS up to 10k and go to Icewind Dale. Then we grind the hell out of that one to get our Black Ice Gear, before we can finally go to the new area. I know some of you already have gotten some Black Ice Gear, but what about everyone else? If I want to go to the new area (and I really do), I would first have to grind the hell out of Dread Ring for a while, or continue in Sharendar. And considering how boring Dread Ring is and that I have two boons from Sharenadar, I guess that's my only option. But after that, I will need to go to Icewind Dale for quite some time to get my gear there, THEN I can go to the new area. And that's with ONE character. Two if I want the new artifact.

2. What if I have multiple character? I have one for every class, and I intend to keep it that way. Add druids? I want one. Add warlocks? I want one. Add shamans? I want one. But for every single class they add, I will have to keep grinding Dread Ring or Sharenadar to get those three boons required. That's two weeks or grinding pr character at minimum. Sure I can grind several char's pr day to get the dailys, but that's grinding the same stuff three or four times a day, EVERY DAY, for two or three weeks. Just so I can get to Icewind Dale with all characters and start all over again, grinding for weeks for every single character.

That's a whole lot of grinding, and for what? Just so I can get to the new area? Sorry to say it, but that means I'll be forced to stick to one main character and ignore everone else. I might as well delete them, and no one wants that. Why sell character slots if you are going to make all new characters useless once they hit 60?

That is why we can't have too many restrictions on the new areas. Either that, or all the boons etc should be account wide, not pr character. If they were account wide, I could level up a new character and grind her for a bit just to get the third boon, then both she and my current max-level char could both go to Icewind Dale and have some fun. It would mean a heck of a lot less grinding, a ton less work, and far, far more fun. And isn't having fun what the game should be all about in the first place?

(note: Yes, I did put a "lvl 65" up there. That is NOT a request to increase the level cap in any way. It was just an example of acceptable restrictions.)

I think that, perhaps, the devs should work campaigns into 1 of 2 categories:

    1. Ones for "fresh 60s", which you only need to have hit the level cap to enter.

    2. Ones for "seasoned 60s", which require at least 3 boons from any campaign.

Using the above pattern, you can offer max-level rewards, regardless of prior experience, while also having campaigns for those with a lot more experience and better gear. If they add more of the first-tier campaigns, it would also add a bit of variety when it comes to where you get those boons that the other ones need.

Just imagine 3 boons and 10k gs AS lvl 65 requirement. If you were forced to spend two weeks getting from lvl 60 to 65 what would be different? Nothing. The point of this restriction is to get you prepared for the new zone, because it is not easy at all. Your character has to be ready. And if you want to play all classes - all your classes should be prepared.

Honestly, we now have 3 areas to grind dailies to earn max level rewards. Id like to see new slightly different stuff. Perhaps a few new areas that function more like the previous quest zones, but with more story leading to a challenging finale. Something like STOs Featured episode arcs or Champs Comic series. And something with the foundry scaling tech, so anyone of any level can participate. They already have gear that scales to level, so even the rewards could be appropriate for any level range.

They would bring a nice break from daily grinds. Add in low-mid level playable content to open alternate leveling paths. While still providing fodder for end game players via new epic dungeons and skirmishes.

I recognize that you have your boons already and so this comment is not directed at you OP but more at your view of the requirements.

For future expansions i don't expect they will make the requirements more strenuous then they are currently. 3 boons and a 10k GS seems appropriate to me to use as a base point from here on out. As said by many many other people, the 3 dread ring boons are easy to get and can be acquired while gearing up your character with no extra farming (and if you can't stand a 10 minute easy run then go can you stand gearing up your character lol). a DR lair takes 10 min for a solo DPS class at the longest and if you want it to be shorter you can group up for it.

Honestly, having to put a bit of time into the game to learn things isn't that bad. 10k GS is quite low now with all the artifacts and cheap enchants flying around. I don't think requiring someone take 2 weeks (while one gets the DR boons) to learn how to play a character class once one hits 60 is a bad thing before throwing them at solo content that is going to hurt a lot more then the previous stuff they just flew through on their way to lv 60
