Well... I think i made an expensive mistake >.<

Yeah. So. There is NO way to quickly swap out powers, perhaps with the normal 10 second cool down? I have to manually pull out a power and put a new one in? (like encounters, for example)?

Look, before a bunch of people flame me, I want to say that I am enjoying the game for the most part. But this very small amount of powers I can use at once is ridiculous. There is NO reason for this at all. What, my character is so stupid he suddenly can't use a power because I want to use another one? Ive seen some posts from people who are happy with the simplified (dumbed down you mean) hotbar that only allows for the small amount of skills we can use, but to me it's ludicrous. How stupid have people become that having more than 3 encounters is too difficult to manage? I just don't get it. I started playing (after playing for a day when the game was first released) 2 days ago or so. I was really enjoying it and decided to spend 60 bucks on a pack and 60 bucks on zen for char. slots and some other stuff so I could have one of each class, the armored bear mount, etc.. Stupid decision on my part without a doubt. I dont blame anyone but me for that. But yeah, why did i do that, ill never know. Im not even 20 on my "main" and Im already getting bored. So, lemme get this straight: We have become so dumb that I shouldn't be able to use my GWF and do the following: Mighty leap, then take down, then not-so-fast, followed by restoring strike? Are you kidding me? I dont understand this design decision. No, I don't want to play a god awful "stand still and use my hotbar" games like WoW or Rift. Those are boring. I love the "hack n slash" style of this game. But, I can't for the life of me understand how gamers have become so dimwitted or what the point of this design decision was. I can have 14 powers in Champions Online. ALL of which can be useful. There is no excuse for the lack of powers. Someone please explain to me why the combat is so limited.

    lol plenty of customization with the dailies,encounters,at will choices...you dont need to be able to use like 30 skills at a time, if you cant stand how its set up find another game thanks.

    I actually feel the design encourages skillful tactical play. You have limited choices and have to make those count for the most. Its makes things far more interesting for me this way. Then having access to everything I can possibly want and use all those powers to face roll the keyboard to victory.

    This. You figure out what to use for a situation and how to use your encounters synergistically to be most effective in a given situation. It encourages individuality (everyone uses a different loadout for different reasons) and strategy (because you can't just spam encounters from your power sheet infinitely). I can think of many RPGs (not just MMOs) that use a set-up like this, and I think it works well.

    Alright. These answers do make me feel better. Cept the guy making a straw man argument that I want 30 powers and should find a different game. I figured there'd be a few like that. Strangely, I figured they'd have a name like deathsremnant. What a shocker. Anyways, I can see the validity of making it about strategy based on what you are fighting, but in that case, shouldn't we have the ability to switch loadouts with ease? Id be more than happy with that. Regardless, I AM enjoying the game, but not being able to do what I said I wanted to do in regards to the specific powers I mentioned is bothersome. Oh well, ill have to keep playing and see how I really feel. Also, Abell39, I can think of ONE other MMO that does this: GW2. Care to share the rest? Because I never said anything about spamming encounters. Not sure why people abuse words like "spam".

    Lots of people would agree with you, and are hoping for ways of making swapping powers more user-friendly.

    party/solo
    single-target/AoE
    heal/damage
    PvE/PvP
    are just some of the considerations various players would like to be able to multi-spec for.

    But I do like the tactical nature of having limited powers and choosing when and how to use them.

    Being able to only use a few powers at any given time means that each choice you make is that much more important. You can't be ready for all circumstances, so you must plan as best you can.

    Games where you can have every power or ability you get available to you basically means that you can just spam them nonstop, and no thought need be put into how or when you use them. There is no need to focus your loadout or try and anticipate who or what you're going to encounter next. Combined with the relatively low cooldown timers on encounters, this means that you're going to have to look for and weigh which powers you slot, how they work together, and when to use them.

    I, for one, prefer a game where there is at least some weight to the decisions you make, and yet is still flexible enough to allow you to change up what you use in short order...

    All I want is a small spellbook that doesn't cover the entire screen almost so you don't have such a risk of dieing mid combat while trying to swap.

    I know of three MMOs that currently does this. GW1, GW2 and Elder Scrolls Online.

    If they had all the powers availiable ingame to use at any time people would just use 3rd party software to maximize attack sequences and cooldowns. Probably still happen but this cheat is magnified with too many buttons. I like the simplied system myself. Other games get way too carried away then class imbalances start to happen after a choice of 50 different skills to use, it gets confusing and the game becomes a headache.

    A LOT of GW2 players miss the original GW system, which is exactly what you're talking about.

    We need to be able to save power sets and change them with a shortcut, at least in PvE, as described by becky above.

    One of the main reason I started playing Neverwinter is for the uncluttered screen. There are some games where there are skill/weapon/magic boxes all over the screen. I did run into a few situations where I felt limited, but after that I learned to change encounters to suit the area.

    The thing is, you can't really implement a lot of hotkeys for active skills in an action mmorpg. The movement is by keyboard, dodge, jump, that already takes a handful of keys AND hand position. And since right hand is already busy with keeping cursor direction, you can only put active hotkeys close to left hand position. There's not that much of space for that, else you trade comfortability for extra active skills.

    I have played a mmorpg that tried implementing action gameplay together with 27 hotkeys for skills/consumables. And even that was by holding Shift or CTRL and clicking 1-9 keys. That put too much pressure and made the game extremely frustrating to play. I soon quit the game, and many others did.

    Thus, I prefer having limited hotkeys and powers. It makes the gameplay much more fluent and also balanced. Who'd want to fight a char armed with like 10 CC powers at the same time in PvP? Definitely not me.

    isn't this the same way DnD 4edt works as well you have a small pool of powers that have to be chosen before any given encounter?

    I feel you on this, especially with Module 2. Now the power page opens over top of my character's dailies. I haven't found a way to make it move back up permanently to where it used to be. But to just have the arrow keys or page up/down be able to cylce through 4 or 5 presets that you've set up would be a blessing indeed.
