I don't know why my message hasn't been published. Anyway, I believe since a few weeks ago the client started suffering of huge memory leaking. It might be related to avatars as someone said, and therefore to video cards and not to main memory. But something really bad happened lately.
I normally don't shut down my computer, I put it on sleep. If NW client stays open when the CPU goes to sleep once it wakes up the game can't be played since it gets so laggy that the player doesn't even move. It obviously slows down other applications too, since it's related to resources occupation and not the game itself or networking. Once you close the client and start it again the problem disappears and the game works perfectly with no lag.
I have been playing for years, I have an NVidia GTX 750 and 8GB Ram. Again, it never happened before Ravenloft and the problem disappears if I shut down the client and start it again. It appears again after getting out of sleep or after playing for some time or standing in PE. Since not everybody seems to experience this, the memory leaking might be related to the graphics card and not CPU.
I hope it helped and hope this problem gets solved soon. New players might just think the game is terribly slow, while it's just a memory leaking problem or so.
Ok, another update to this matter. I'm more and more sure that this is a graphics related memory leak issue. As I have stated before I use the /tex_memory_allowed to limit the max value of texture memory used. If a new texture is loaded and above limit, some other texture gets flushed out. This limit seems to be working pretty well in opposite to no limit (which leads to massive stalls due to memory swapping as soon as the max usable memory is reached - which of course is really slow). Memory size in /showmem shows constant loading and unloading. Sadly it is not possible to see what content is loaded into memory:
Because after playing for several hours, more and more textures seem to be "missing" ( I know the graphics of the region pretty well now), which hints to the fact there is not enough space left to load all those, some visible textures already get flushed out again. The space usable for textures seems to get smaller and smaller, the limit is predefined and fixed though - which leads to the conclusion that the memory is used by textures and .... something. This "something" is slowly and continuously clogging up the memory in my graphics adapter.
Since I have two different effects now pointing into the same direction, this bug seems to be confirmable.
The effect might be less noticeable in newer systems with a lot of graphics memory, but it is there. As @yashmak pointed out, on his 8GB graphics adapter it occurs after the client running for many hours.
Yea I noticed many people commenting to me shortly after MOD 14 when live; often the Ritual sites in River District are often entirely missing texture; my friend with a 8 GB graphics adapter even noticed that, even though my graphic's adapter has 4 GB despite being a new card with DDR5 Ram. It's also why I suspected some sort of memory leak, could have been a probable cause, much earlier in the thread; even took some 'heat' for suggesting that.
I've noted it on my Graphic's card after but a few hours. But sometimes can happen much earlier, or slightly later, yet that could be dependant upon moving maps, or what/how/where the content is, and how often it's changed as well...
The symptoms: Seem to be not just effect Daily, Encounter, or At-Wils that sometimes have .15-.25s pauses; but sometimes also enemy kill FX rendering slower at times. Most noticeable is when walking thru Fence Posts. While in MOD 13 I'd regularly do this at 60 FPS set in Advanced tab and they'd always appear to flow naturally. Yet since MOD 14 while they can at times appear to flow naturally, other times they some appear like the Advanced TAB set FPS to 30; cause they are always choppy or blocky when I do that. Sometimes you don't even see any transition they just disappear entirely; and that's clearly far less than 30 FPS. Still even when it occurred I've had /fpsgraph 1 often seeing low blues the vast majority of the time; which I thought was odd. Still it could be exaggerated by a texture or other graphical memory leak just as equally.
I do know Cryptic has a DEV looking into this issue.
So any addition things people have noticed, or might help shed light is likely helpful! Try to remain upbeat & positive everybody, we 'may' have a distant light at the end of the tunnel.

8GB is my computer's RAM. My video card has 2GBs. Anyway the problem to me appears pretty soon (mainly if I stay in PE or if I leave the client in the login or change character screen), and the worst is when I resume my computer after sleep or suspend. When I do I am forced to close the client and restart it because the lag is huge (lag spikes are even 2 / 3 seconds) and the game is unplayable. In the past I always noticed a memory leaking and had the same problems but they came out after a few days of leaving the client open (and resuming from sleep).

Yea my Video Card is relatively new but only has 4GB DDR5 Ram. Still in the Ravenloft BUG thread even there I had posted Texture's in River District like the Ritual Sites which never used to disappear; were not only disappearing for myself, but also for a friend I know who has a 8 GB Video Card. That was posted with the week of Ravenloft launching and was even commented by myself once much earlier here as well; and why I suspected some sort of Memory Leak be it texture's or otherwise.
Still maybe there is a distant light at the end of this tunnel.
I'm also seeing a severe FPS drop issue. It seems like it gradually worsens over time as I play, and restarting the client for some odd reason doesn't fix it. I've yet to try a cold start to see what happens. When the bug manifests, FPS will vary wildly -- single digits most of the time, with occasional runs in the 50-60 range for a few seconds at a time. It could be a memory leak, but it almost feels like memory fragmentation instead. I have an SSD drive so it's not easy to tell if the game is doing excessive caching to disk, and I haven't noticed its general RAM usage growing out of control in Task Manager. Like many laptops, mine has integrated video + a dedicated graphics card, and I have NW set to use the latter.

Yea it's possible and while were perhaps using a little detective work to suspect a possible memory leak or fragmentation issue as you explained. Several have noticed changing locations or the longer you play does either speed it up, or sometimes result in more noticeable issues.
Example I use as it's the easiest to reproduce: Running thru Fence Post's that fall forward. When displaying normally they are seamless and fall forward looking natural. Yet when the BUG starts to show, it appears like I set advanced tab down to 30 FPS. I say that cause those rare occasions I do, the posts transition's are a lot choppier or blocky. Yet this is in fact occurring while advanced tab is in fact set to 60. Now it doesn't happen all the time often for times >75% of the time they may display normally. But when it does happen it's very noticeable difference if it's not Fence Posts, it's any one of any number of FX visuals...
Could be a Daily, Encounter, or At-Wil that will have sometimes but a few short .10-.25s pauses sometimes in fact several, or it could be as Enemy are defeated their FX. While it may render some FX fine others seem to lag behind. Some either Memory Leak / Fragmentation or something... Sadly without more advanced diagnostic tools or know what changes occurred in Mod 14 that really falls on Cryptic.
I think I had been using the 391.74 drivers from March/April similar to you, but in Mid May I upgraded to 397.93 and then in early July to 398.36 and neither has helped.
My Core as I denoted is older but also not the reason for what I'm seeing. CPU load is only typically 3-7% at max; and 95% of graphical performance is the GPU. And any 1 GB older GPU used to have no problems in MOD 13 rendering most effects.

Thought I may consider upgrading on Monday to a new i5/i7 CPU, Asus Motherboard, 16/32 GB DDR4 Ram. But realize I'm not doing that to solve this problem, and don't suspect it will help, as your computer is also relatively new. Also friends who have new 4/6 Core Chip's even with 8 GB Video card's, are in fact noticing it just sometimes takes a little longer. But once it starts it often will comes & goes at always unexpected times.
So I'm trying to remain hopeful for everyone sake.
Sadly things sometimes take a bit longer than we might HOPE. But I've always wished there was a bit more priority on BUG fixes for sure.
But I do think they are investigating it and trying to confirm the problem. Then maybe we'll hopefully see a FIX in the short to mid term. Some people have posted some very HELPFUL things to help Cryptic narrow it down.
Mean while we try to be patient, my Elves will pray to Corellon. Not sure what God @pedro2908926 pray's to but maybe we need the help of a few or several God's.
Sadly, I bet you may see a "fix" around the end of October. I swear if they ask for a list of bugs again this year I will lose my mind! It is disheartening to see "Patch Notes" that do not include anything about the massive number of bugs we are seeing on a daily basis. But hey at least they will be well represented at PAX!!
There are several players who have the same problems that have given up on reporting anything here long ago. To be honest EVERYONE has the same problems, but a majority have systems that are capable of continuing to function despite the memory leaks. Yes, there are more than one, and even the crash reporting function does not terminate and stays resident after a crash.... Given that now many with with 8 GB DDR5 Video Card's are also noticing a FPS issues; it just takes 'slightly' longer for it to show up it should hopefully be making it's way to the TOP of the priority list. Now as I said earlier I wasn't upgrading expecting a single performance gain would be achieved; I only did this as likely the time had come.
No noticeable difference in the slightest. Despite a whole new Motherboard, CPU 8th Generation, Top the of the Line as well. So save your money on the new hardware just as I had previously expected... and in time if they fix the issue maybe buy a little ZEN or maybe consider a slightly newer Video Card / GPU when you can afford it. As I said that's always 90% of the performance you see in game. I only upgraded cause it was long overdue not because I did so in hope of any performance improvements.
Yet realize even those with 8 GB DDR5 based GPU's of also noticing the FPS issues; it just takes slightly longer for those players to notice the problem. So we may need to be patient and try to keep fellow players motivated over the next 2, 3 or possibly 4 weeks moving forward.
Still hopefully we've likely been able to identify a few possible inter related causes, that may help narrow down the cause for cryptic, and maybe even help focus the resolution for our fellow players.
Yea I'm surprised how long that's taking to be honest - especially since it effects so many. Though I found it odd someone in the forum thread which I can't even find anymore possibly cause it lost it's TOP spot someone mentioned they had the EXACT same sound issue during MOD 5 which apparently they later corrected. However I don't know if that DEV is still around or with the company to know what the FIX was; sadly I only joined late in MOD 5 / MOD 6 so I can't verify if that is true.
I noticed that in my case the memory leaking is huge when I leave the client window (I don't know about full screen) open on the character login page. Leaving the client for just a few hours on the character login page makes the game unplayable when I log in. I need to completely close the client and restart it to have full performance back. I have been playing for years and I remember this has always been a problem, but after Mod 14 it exponentially grew. It used to take a few days, not it just takes 2-3 hours to cause huge lags.
Is there a way to disable graphics / animations on the login page? Thanks in advance.
i guess its a good bye to Neverwinter for me, looks like they are more interested on launch another mod than to solve the last mod issues... this thread is alive since 2 of july and still no answer or an fix.
I see tomorrow's BUG fix finally has a several issues that started with MOD 14 like with enchantments, insignia and several others - yet still no mention of anything related to FPS/FX that sometimes have slower rendering at times...
I had (until an hour ago) the same (or a similar?) issue as the OP, at least I had the same symptoms.
I have found a list of commands online and I now use the /tex_memory_allowed command and set it to 512MB (at least at the moment: /tex_memory_allowed 536870912 - it's in bytes), this seems to force the system to free the memory. I have tried min values too and I could watch the continuous unloading of textures. The lags and freezes have stopped for now. Downside is, loading and unloading seems to cost a little fps, but I have rather a constant slightly lower fps rate, than freezes and stalls. Edit: Clarified the text and additionally: I have successfully used 640MB (*1024*1024 = 671088640) for a few hours now (using 756MB was unsuccessfull though, it lagged pretty soon). The command worked fine, no slowdown even in Protector's Enclave. I have to enter that command each time though when I start the game, don't know yet if there is a command line parameter.
THIS solves the problem, thank you! It's a memory leaking problem that involves graphics card memory and it has gotten a lot worse with latest Mod. Memory leaking also occurs when you are out of the game keeping the client open on the Character Selection interface. By using /tex_memory_allowed 671088640 it stops happening. I haven't tried any other values, but this seems to work great. I wonder if I could get this number higher since I have a 2 GB Nvidia...
Anyway, now please give me a way to permanently save this so that I don't have to type it every time I start the game, I tried to bind it to a function key but I am not sure it's working. Thank you
Hi, its me again... i dont know why or how but i've noticed an little improvement on 64x client (32bits is still unplayable), it is freezing less often then before... can someone confirm to me if anything has changed?
ps: theres a way to change Neverwinter configs to run with OpenGL instead of directx? i wanted to try a few things. (if the answer is yes, how do i do that?)

Nothing changed for me. I still need to use /tex_memory_allowed to make it work.
I had (until an hour ago) the same (or a similar?) issue as the OP, at least I had the same symptoms. The problem started with the new Ravenloft content patch and no released fix has changed a thing. After a short period of time, the game lagged and stalled terribly, I had to restart it.
But I have just found something, that seems to work (at least on my system, but there is a chance that this works for the OP as well if his problem is based on the same bug). In my system the lags seem to be a memory leak and it looks like it is related with texture memory, more specificly textures of avatars, since the problem increases a lot faster in regions with more people (like Protector's Enclave). The texture memory doesn't seem to be freed anymore but accumulates over time - and when my old 9600GT's 1GB is full, RAM starts swapping wildly and that leads to massive stalls. And then I had to restart the game. (I used /showmem 1 to watch the memory related problem).

Still experimenting with the values, I think it's possible to use even more of the 1GB for textures.

For the past week, average cpu usage appears to be slightly reduced after a recent patch. This is the reason there is less freezing while playing on your two-core/thread cpu. Average cpu usage is usually still more than two cores, but overall, slightly less than before. I see no reduction in frame rate (otherwise I would be complaining).
I have more and more problems with this issue. I can't keep the client open without using /tex_memory_allowed 671088640 The game has become unplayable without that command, memory leaking is huge.
Is there a way to launch the client with that command on command line or something like that? Thanks in advance.
FPS drops can occur if you have problems with your connection or the servers are too busy, while system configuration is also very important. To start resolving these issues, you will first need to check if everything is running optimally, and then gradually move onto updating drivers.

Is there a way to disable graphics / animations on the login page? Thanks in advance.
Hopefully it's addressed soon as well.
Thank you
ps: theres a way to change Neverwinter configs to run with OpenGL instead of directx? i wanted to try a few things. (if the answer is yes, how do i do that?)
This is the reason there is less freezing while playing on your two-core/thread cpu.
Average cpu usage is usually still more than two cores, but overall, slightly less than before.
I see no reduction in frame rate (otherwise I would be complaining).

The frame rate no longer drops when the player has a primary quest without a Quest Path.
The game has become unplayable without that command, memory leaking is huge.
Is there a way to launch the client with that command on command line or something like that? Thanks in advance.
