I haven't upgraded my computer in a long time but one of the other threads I was reading got me interested in what people are using to run this game.
I have:
Core I7 5930k (40 PCIE lanes) @ 3.6ghz
SATA RAID 0 7200 RPM with 4 drives
16G DDR4
2x GTX 980 SLI
4k TV monitor (3840x2160)
Gigabyte x99 motherboard with 4x SLI support.
Usually I have no problems running this game and only get occasional lag. There is no upgrade path for the CPU so I'd need to get a new MB/CPU combo if I upgraded. I don't know if adding a third GTX 980 would improve performance in 3xSLI configuration or if it would be better to switch to a newer graphics configuration. I used to have a Crossfire setup with two 5770s but they couldn't handle Risa in the summer at all. I wonder if the new 2080 graphics from Nvidia make any difference in this game with their built-in ray tracing?

I've never had a problem using a single GTX 980 but at 1080p. It's possible your GPUs are having problems with 4K but it's more likely that any lag you're getting is from network issues or (rarely) the server, not from your GPU or CPU.

Nope, wait for the 2180 or AMD's 7 nm GPUs before upgrading.
My old PC had one GTX 550Ti, and could run at medium settings. I'd hope that two 980s would let you do at full graphics.
Current PC has a 1070Ti and runs it at full. Can do /renderscale 2 without issue. Of course, in either case my monitor is a bit old and just does 1920x1080. So your screen resolution is probably the place it bogs it down?
Unless you can find a deal on a 1070 or 1080, which is more than enough for STO, best to wait. The whole ray tracing thing is more gimmick than useful to all but a few games. And you're gonna pay big bucks for it.

Got impatient waiting for Ryzen 3000 and retired my older Intel rig. 2200G integrated vega chip so I can recycle it down to one of the kids or something if I do jump on a 3000 later this year. 1920x1080 FXAA everything set to high... 70-120 FPS depending on the map. Not bad for a machine that cost me less then 500 bucks Canadian.

Your hardware is more than capable. I'd wait to see what improvements happen with performance come now they are focused on 64 Bit.
I run this on a laptop, and the only issue is frame-rate because the game doesn't access all the performance of my laptop, which runs fine with other games.

You don't need all that much hardware for STO. But I recommend 2 monitors to everyone. Contemporary games work relatively well with alt-tabbing between monitors and so on, so you can use your browser and play STO at the same time. Very useful to research stuff. Or to entertain yourself on the side while doing Admiralty or DOFFing.

I’m currently running a MacBook Pro Retina mid-2012 with the GeForce 650m with Win10 in boot camp. Can run the game just fine on a reduced resolution without sacrificing much eye candy. STO unlike other newer games seems to be very configurable to my laptop’s hardware and still look good. Granted it’s an old game.
I’m currently building a new desktop mini-itx with an Intel 9900k and Geforece RTX 2070 to handle today’s modern games (at 1080p with a Widescreen 15.5”) mostly due to fact that I’m tired of the Discovery content of STO and am looking elsewhere for gaming.
Your hardware shows no issues at all. Any persisting lag is likely internet/network related. Side note, not at all an issue with STO generally but still worth mentioning: personally I would never use a TV in place of a solid monitor with Gsync. I use a dell 27" 1440p. I've considered upgrading to one of the newer and larger 4k models but I haven't seen anything yet with the features that I want. Low response time, gsync, 4k with 40+ inches.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.
I do not believe STO supports more than 1 GPU. I suppose the best way to see GPU usage is to use MSI Afterburner.
As for the hardware I use to play STO... I basically uses laptops nowadays. I actually have not used my desktop at all for over 4 years. The laptops I use to play STO are as follows:
- Dell Latitude 3540 (Business laptop) - Dual core i5-4200u, 1080p screen, Radeon HD 8850m dedicated GPU, 8GB of RAM. The Radeon HD 8850m from 2013 is good enough to play STO; it is about equal to a nVidia 940mx released in 2015.
Apple Mac Pro 2012 3.33 GHz Six Core Xeon W3680, 32GB ECC RAM, Apricorn Velocity Duo x2 - Dual SSD RAID to PCIe adapter, 7x SSD/HDD, GTX 980 Ti (6GB), Windows 7, 10, OSX x3 (legacy thru current)

Sometimes though I play from my Laptop which is an MSI GT72 6QD Dominator Pro. It has a GTX 970M and it can easily handle STO at 1080p Max Settings.
This isn't the type of game that most people build a PC specifically for. I have a friend who plays it on a $700 Dell Laptop with no problems.
