This may not help everyone, but I found that if I renamed my ship after claiming a replacement, or purchasing a ship it will not allow me to customize the appearance. If I rename after modifying, the changes seem to stick. Doesn't solve the problem, but it's a work around.

Yup. I've noticed this too. As well as several reports of ships and fleet vessels not retaining skin changes after closing the tailor view. Has anyone else submitted a bug ticket? Several people are having this problem, and it seems to be Defiant/Sao Paulo class mostly as well I've heard, Fleet Cruiser.

I can only modify certiain ships. But saveral are locked to the skin they had when the problem started, haven't found a solution but I'm stuck with the boring default on my new ship... lame.
