I have the exact same issue with Radeon HD 6570 on Windows 8.1. It also seems the gamma/brigtness setting is saved but not used - I set my brightness to 130% (or 1.30 in the gamma menu), and each time I start the game the brightness value reads 130%, but acts like 100%.

I have the same issue with my Romulan character.

Update - I tried to continue the mission today and it worked - the server didn't crash and I wasn't logged out. I don't know what has been done to the game, but the problem seems to be fixed.
