I suspected as much. I have very little gaming experience and have had to figure out everything on my own, and I'm certain there are numerous types of character upgrades that I'm not even aware of.

I'm also having an issue with this mission. I can complete the mission, but it doesn't give me the next mission afterwards. I am boarding the disabled Klingon ship at the beginning without destroying the escort (I can't kill that thing no matter what I try) - could that be a problem? Every other mission component comes up…
