As an aside, I find it sad that so many people think that Gene Roddenberry created Star Trek with an intent to usher in a golden age for humanity, when in fact he did it because he needed a paycheck. And it almost didn't pan out. His original concept was rejected. And sometimes I wonder if, they didnt grudgingly accept the reinvented version we have all come to love out of pitty more than recognition of the goldmine that it proved to be...

I would imagine that Gene's response was "Thank God, I can keep paying the utilities and buying groceries."

I would also imagine that the designer of the Vesta Class felt the same way when they accepted his submission and chose to actually use it.

Well, aren't you just the cutest little pile of self-evident cynicsm?

I'm sorry, I'll clarify my position for those of us who apparently want to argue against the bee in their bonnet:

No, obviously the hypothetical writer isn't going to hand over the rights to their IP for the sheer pride of it. However, given the choice between 'a token fee and /hey look, there's the ship I designed in my head and you can fly it about and go pewpew/' and 'nothing at all', I would expect them to choose the former.

does that mean they haven't even started modeling it yet? oh dear, i wonder if it will even come out this year, if at all. i don't mind to terribly though, its got that grotesque fan fiction quality about it, and its a mery sue in starship form. a commander station in all 3 professions is probably needed to accurately portray the thing. hopefully the ambassador class development is farther along than that

I dont think Mark has a problem letting the ship go to game, since he designed and sold it to CBS. And as far as the Trek Book Author David Mack is concerned, he has no say, he jest tells a story, he didn't design the ship.

I'm a Modder for many Star Trek Games, some my know me from Bridge Commander, But i got a fully detailed flying model i built of the Vesta Classes on My DA page. If the deves want to look at the ship with 20 000 polys, here you go...

That's what I'm thinking. TRIBBLE making it a new ship skin. I'm thinking more along the line's of a Sci-focused Assault Cruiser.

To whom ever it was that necroed my thread thanks! It finally got a dev response. I have asked when it would be coming out over a million times, and to now know that it is just waiting for CBS approval at least makes me feel like they are at least looking into it.:D

Yeah, so we can have one more ship to debate on specing in and later realize that something else was better. So you use a respec token to go back to a different ship and then it the other gets a fix and you think it might be worth a shot again, so you use yet another respec token to see if it's worth it yet again.

I'm sorry, but I'm against adding totally new ships until they add a way for us to test builds, and I don't see that coming for a loooong time.

I think it would be great as a tier 6 ship, either the science ship or a science oriented cruiser.

Although you can't really test ships on Tribble that you have to grind for without actually grinding, which is pretty lame.

    Zombie thread!

I thought the general consensus was that we're going to stop speculating on the Vesta. Because nobody knows whether it should be a cruiser or sci ship, and Dan posted somewhere that they're probably saving it for tier 6...which is many months, if not years, away.

I'd find speculation about the Ambassador to be much more productive...

If you go by the wiki, it is most definately a assault cruiser, with cannons

Just want to throw a word of caution out there that we WANT to make the Vesta class - but we must coordinate with CBS on whether or not we have the rights to put it in game as it has appeared in other products. Stay tuned.

Assuming the Vesta Class is a go, what type of ship would you guys make it into?

Speculation is the whole reason the internet exists; plus i highly doubt Tier 6 is years away, in fact I would bet we will have T6 by the end of the year.

She is a State of the Art assault cruiser. Read the book, her mission is to protect the Federation either by rendering aid, defense, tactical combat or patrol. The hole point of the Slip Stream Tec is to help the Federation and there Allies, not to explore like the sovy and luna. Her cannons alone place her on the Tac side of STO.

Mark Rademaker disagrees. If you ask him personally, he says in STO the Vesta would be a Science Ship with a Tactical Edge. Meaning she be like the Luna.

Yes, i have talked to him on this, but also take in account all that David Mack has written of Dax's adventurers with the Aventine, she is more then a science ship. But i remember Mark saying it was more for a multi role ship, so.... would it not be cool if they could spec it for the next tear of ship as a true multi role ship and have 2 slots for science, engineering and tactical.

Meh. Proliferating all sorts of hardcoded special-ability designs is exactly the sort of thing that the abstracted ship classification system was designed to avoid.

Special abilities should be for consoles.

I agree, the Vesta will likely be a Tier 6 ship.

But who knows what plans Cryptic has for Tier 6 ships. Especially when we seen so far how delicate BO stations are with PvP balance.

I'd want to see the other T6 ships before I say what I want this to be.

This thing looks like it might be a good cross between a sci ship (large deflector) and an Escort (Armament)

But meh. Who knows what'll happen

For people who are saying Tac bechus of armament I cant find a repeat of spaecs for that once. I have looked at the desighn and recall that thare were only 2 cannon on it. Also the ship is a Multi-role explorer. I think what may work is a more eng bild more sci abilatys and more tac wepons.

Either way we need to look at the bare bone facts, and that is: one it is most obviously a Cruiser(this can be determined by just looking at its size; it is only slightly smaller than the Sovereign), two it uses a great deal of advanced technologies giving it a bit of a Science bend, and three even though it uses Phaser Cannons that does not necessarily imply that it is an Assault Cruiser but instead it could just mean that that is where Starfleet is heading in defensive technology.

I think the Vesta should be a Cruiser with a higher science ability than the star cruiser. Sacrifice the tac officer slot for an incresed sci ability. In the Destiny series it was an experimeental science ship for the most part. I think it was a little larger than the Luna, and just a little smaller than a sovvy.

    Not I.

The Star Cruiser is already to science focused.
I love my Star Cruiser, but I hate that It's eng/sci.

    Excelsior costume is my vote.

Honestly, I'll be darned disappointed if they add the Vesta to the growing list of cruisers simply based on her 'size.' She was always portrayed as being the ship with all the 'tricks' - and mechanically speaking that makes her a science vessel.

Now, I'd like to see her as a 'heavy' science vessel, ie: more hit points and slower turning, along with that tactical edge... and if Mark Rademaker agrees I think it's hard to argue with that.

"All the tricks" does not connotate Science vessel, but rather ship design determines what it is. Based upon what specks can be gathered it is most certainly a Cruiser. Now this does not mean that it would not have a science bend, in fact even the Sovereign and the Galaxy was primarily an exploration ship not some type of heavy Assault Cruiser. Starfleet is primarily an exploration and a peace keeping organization and their ships reflect that idea.
