Hi everyone, I have decided to finally follow my heart and try Star Trek online, being an old fashion trekky, I just couldnt resist the call any longer. Although I still have my reservation"been hearing a lot of negative about this game" I believe there is potential for me to love this game very much.

I finished installing yesterday and managed to look a bit into character creation, seemed like a lot of fun, but I intend to make my very first captain today.

I was thinking of trying the Science career. I saw you can have an interpid class starship"Voyager" in the science career and I thought it would be awesome to have.

I do have a few questions, any help would be greatly appreciated. Is it wise for me to start my first character in the Science career? Should I choose Tactical instead? What does the Engineer Career give you in ships, are they cruisers or escorts? Any tips and advice can anyone give me for game start?

Thanks all, I really appreciate any help given. I hope I will love the experience of Star Trek onine.

1st off welcome to the forums and STO, we hope you enjoy your stay with us.

2nd I would pick your main career with the style of play you like. As you know there are 3 choices, Science, Engineering and Tactical. Each has it's pros and cons as you will find out, but all are fun to play.

Ship choice is what it is, you can get any ship in the game, if you pool your points under it's tree, but I stayed within my professions selection when doing mine. The ships assigned to each profession, gives you a few more BOs slots under that tree. I don't have the break down in front of me now, be you find once you get into higher level ships, you will see you have more slots to use, depending on the ship you picked. So if you pick science, and you want more science slots, then it's not a good idea to get a Galaxy class ship.

Anyway you are coming into the game at a good time, most of the bugs are gone, and it has more content for new guys. So I hope you stick with it, and don't listen to the haters. You have to see if you like it for your own playing style. I know I like it. lol

Thank you, I didnt know you could pick any ship you wanted, although it makes sense that you get more of a ship in your own career branch.

I am happy to hear they fixed a lot of bugs and added more content, I usually dont listen much to the haters but I dont ignore them neither, usually, before joining a game, I look at both side fo the coin before taking a decision. Although I admit, some haters did have strong point, as you can see, it didnt stop me from coming here as I want to see this for myself. Beside, I also think that bridge officers is the coolest idea I have heard of in years, didnt see any mmo's which offers this.

Although I feel pretty confident to start in a science career, is it a decent career to start with as a rookie? And what specie would fit best with the science career?

May I heartily welcome you to 10 Forward, mad house of the STO forums. A few tips:
    1. Avoid SaintHazard. He hates everyone.
    2. Most of us are friendly folk. Unlike STO Discussion...
    3. Don't start pointless threads. We start too many already....
and 4. Enjoy yourself. It ain't compulsory, but we prefer it.

May I recommend a trip to the STO wiki, which has a large section for beginners.

For Science, it recommends the following (Cut & Paste from this page):
    Healing
    Optimal race selection: Betazoid

Empathic: Increased team regeneration, reduced threat (required).
    Telepathic: Increased perception (required).
Creative: Improve healing and damage of your kit.
    Astrophysicist: Improved starship operations training.

If you do choose science, the Intrepid class ship (as seen in Star Trek: Voyager) has had an overhaul, and this upgrade will be gracing the game soon - it now features moving warp pylons/engines!

First off, welcome to ten forward! Be wary of your sanity here, we all lost it at some point down the road. ;)

Second, just because your a science officer doesnt mean you should fly a science ship. For example, my main is an engineer but flys an escort. This allows me to put out damage like a tac officer but with better survivablilty.

Third, If you have any questions send me a PM. I'll be glad to help. If you would like someone to tag along for your first mission, I can do that too. There is a lot to grasp at first, but thats what your first mission is for. :)

I may take you on that offer. Havent had time to look into the game just yet beside the character creation part. So there are still a lot of stuff I dont know yet, my only back up is the wiki, reviews and my own star trek knowledge.

Tell ya what. I'll mirror your char, if you want (I have spare space), so that we can level up/play together. Depending on what time you play, of course...

Welcome to Star Trek! I hope you enjoy your time here.

One misconception you may have is that your ship is determined by your career. Like if you choose to be a science officer, you have to get a science ship. This is not the case. You could choose, shall we say, Engineer and get a science ship. Each career gets a few space skills, but they are rather generic and all ships would benefit from them.

What your career choice mostly impacts is your ground abilities and what kits you can use on the ground. For example, only an Engineer can use Engineering kits, or only a Tactical can use Tactical Kits.

    i'ma panda =D
you don't know me..yet... but i'm sure you will ^______^
OO SHINY THING! - gets distracted with your belt buckle-

oh yes, to answer your question, and class can fly any ship, the classes are more what skills you as a captain can use, and what skills you can train your bridge officers
you're not limited at all by what ship you can fly,

Thats good to know, so in many ways, it doesnt restrict your gameplay on your career path. Awesome. :)

You guy's have been most helpful, many thanks, if the community is as friendly in-game, I'm going to really enjoy myself. Not that I had any doubt about the community itself, most haters dont mention the community at all.

Aion for an exemple, beta tested the game and I can say the community is "self destructing" itself.

    Hi!

    Who the hell are you?
What the hell do you want?
You better get off my damn property before I call the cops, unless you have pie. We like keylime pie.

(I used to want cake, but that brought out FAR too many memes)

    You won't.

I know that because I know things.

And the things that I know are not me being ended by you or you ending anyone who is me which is what I know.

I can see why you may have misunderstood that my statement that I would end you would end with you believing that your knowledge in certain areas that may or may not be connected to my ending you, or lack of ability thereof, would result in a non-enditure of your person by the aforementioned me.

I would like to re-iterate my original statement, with an addendum which you, SaintHazard, would find most beneficial to read, understand, and accept as your responsibility to take into consideration at your earliest opportunity.

    I WILL END YOU, F*CKER!

They are envious of my achievments.

They dog me relentlessly in a futile attempt to catch me trafficking contraband. Attempting to catch me trafficking contraband, attempting to catch me trafficking contraband, attempting to catch me traaaaaafficking contraband.

Mirror your character = create my own character which is almost a copy of yours, so that I can show you what to do.

Doesn't matter anyway. Your American. I'll be in bed asleep when your playing.

Actually, funny story. One time I did in fact scare the living sh*t out of my girlfriend by swerving violently from side to side with her in the car, yelling, "BLUE SPARKS BLUE SPARKS."
