You can buy additional character slots from the Z-Store.
I believe the upper limit on them is around 60 - surely that's enough?

There's always gonna be a limit anyway due to network space, Cryptic and now DECA will need to keep everyone of your characters on their servers all the time (that's why you don't loose your characters if you have to uninstall) and there's thousands of players.

Lets for a sake of argument say there's exactly thousand players (I'm pretty sure there's a lot more then that) and each one of them have 100 characters (40 above the current limit) now that's 100 000 characters the server has to constantly keep track and that number can quickly spiral out of control if you add more players.

I suspect the limit of 60 per player was determined to be a good max in that for most players that's more then enough (I'm quite alt heavy and I don't have anywhere near that number and most players have 1-2 characters).

As far as I know the maximum is 61 with a lifetime subscription and 53 without. At 26 I'm not even halfway there yet, with no plans to make more any time soon.

This is correct. I have 60 myself, but I wouldn't mind making a few more.

It'd be nice if we could make a few more, even if I understand the limit is half of what Champions has because of the space requirements. STO has to keep track of not just the player character, but also their ship, BOFFs, and everything else.

My issue is that most of the hair sucks for males. One of the best styles is only on Romulan faction the side swept one. Only recently have there been some additions given because they were created for females first and then ported to the men's side. I get some aliens need to have large forhead adaptions but it comes at the cost of regular humans.

Also I was hoping we would get playable android and gynoids and playable Vortas for Jem'hadars.

You want an android? Make a human and give them pale skin. There's no real functional difference. And you're not getting a playable Vorta because they're genetically engineered to be servants of the Founders (whereas Jem'Hadar have to be controlled with their addiction to the white).

Androids are a no-go from CBS AFAIK, but as Jonsils said, there is nothing stopping you from RP'ing one with the customise options.

'Gynoids'....buy lifetime membership and pick Lib Borg.

Vorta are a no-go as per the FCT's below. This subject has been requested many times, and will likely result in moderation.

14) Why No Vortas or Female Jem'Hadar in the Dominion Faction?

First, it's specifically a Jem'Hadar Faction not a Dominion Faction due to the nature of its storyline (I specifically asked for clarification on this). Second, Jem'Hadar themselves are genderless, so the notion of gender doesn't apply to them. The only way to get as close as possible to depicting a genderless character model is with the male model for obvious reasons. In the livestream it was even stated that they would love to remove the gender buttons from the Tailor for Jem'Hadar, but cannot because it would cause things to break. But you're encouraged to roleplay your Jem'Hadar as female if you so choose. (Time code: 43:00:00 - 48:05:00)

Additionally, it was also stated that the VIL storyline is very Jem'Hadar-centric, so playing as any other race wouldn't make sense from that perspective. Adding Vorta wasn't stated as something "they want to do", but rather something that they weren't entirely ruling out, because there's "always a chance" that they might. Someday. (Time code: 1:10:15 - 1:11:25)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krUrwQwxn6g&t=4249s

More information regarding playable Vorta or other playable species for the Dominion/Jem'Hadar: It was originally thought that there would be other playable Dominion species. However, as the story began to take shape, it made less sense, as the story became very Jem'Hadar-centric. Even having a Vorta BOFF made no sense, as a Vorta would never report to a Jem'Hadar. So, it was decided that for VIL, it would be playable Jem'Hadar only for story reasons. (Time code: 1:26:50 - 1:29:41)

But, without promising anything, it was stated that making other playable species available for the Dominion/Jem'Hadar through an unlock by playing through the entire VIL storyline might be considered. (Time code: 41:05 - 43:20)

As of this writing, 2018 06 15, the entire story arc for VIL has yet to be revealed, so in time it should make sense.

I have 48 characters, a lot of them from the Temporal, Delta, and KDF recruitment events and would have more if I played all four recruitments. I only ever made one Gamma recruit since the Jem'Hadar are useless for space Barbie and have few roleplay hooks (in fact, the only natural one for them is already taken by Dukan'Rex). I don't play droids in Star Wars games either, for much the same reason, though the SW ones do have more variety and RP potential than the J'H.

Temporal could use some more playable race variety too for that matter, but at least it some.

Having "lore" is not a reason. I have at least one character for lore per faction, but the freedom to use captain types and customize them is one of the biggest draws of this game outside of space gameplay. There isn't a "lore" reason to use a captain like Jill Valentine in a faction is there? Guess what, its fun that players can do it and spend time making them and the BOFFs also part of some other media. We have the freedom to use these characters. Then for some reason it ended with Jem'Hadar because they didn't want to throw in the Alien option. Also what's your lore reason for having such limited hair styles for men? STO future to advanced for barbershops?

Why? How much playtime does any one character have?

Most altaholics don't even try to go through all of the characters each session and kind of rotate who the main is over time. For example, I usually have from three to six active at any particular time but who those are changes over time. It depends on mood, what the current event storyline is, who has a new ship or other gear, or if I have an idea for tweaking their space or ground build, etc., or other little inspirations. Most other altaholics I have talked to do something similar if they don't use them strictly for farming or storage or whatever (and farmers are really something different from the typical altaholic).

I typically have 2-3 character I'll actively play and that roster rotates based on my moods.

Well, most of them date back to 2013, so quite a bit of playtime actually. I have at least one of every playable Race in each Faction and from the various Recruitment events. Having various Careers; flying different ship types; using varied Reputations, Specializations, Traits, and Weapons. Not to mention their Skill Points have all been spent differently. All of them are themed along some line, and each BOFF is customized beyond whatever generic look it has upon commission. I've spent hours crafting backstories for all the Captains and most of the BOFFs as well. Why? In short, I like creating things.

I have 15? (too lazy to check :) ). 3 of each 2409 main faction (fed, kdf, rom) x (tac, sci, eng) plus TOS, Disco, Jem'Hadar plus some extras.
Each was created to fit a theme, like my Science! captain that has all the Tholian ships and uses the console set, or my mirror universe defector who flies his stolen Paradox with his mirror crew and reprogrammed holo-Leeta loyalty officer.

I usually only play one of them at a time, and don't do any farming.

Sounds like fun for the next Delta Recruit event.

But the Deltan will still say "Alien"... She/he will only be a Deltan to you... Just like my Violacean I created in the aliengen about 12 years ago...

Actually, A while back Kael had mentioned something about giving a blank for Alien species where we could name the species. Even a dropdown would be nice. We could use the Aliengen as it is with no change, but there would be a dropdown or a blank in which we could type "Deltan" or "Violacean" or whatever we wanted to call our aliens...
