Only speculating here, but with all the recent reports of lag rubberbanding and other connectivity issues, have they implemented some upgrades to the back end to make improvements, cos Kael or baddmoon always post regarding upcoming new in game content, so does kinda seem odd that if anything new was due the player base has not yet been given the heads up.
Just received a 5 gigabyte pre-patch after closing the game, are there any new things coming? It seems like a lot to fix things.
It is normal, nothing to worry about. There's another content drop coming in the next week or so. They do not pre-patch just for fixes, only new content.

No, nothing to do with upgrades or improvements. They only do this, as I said, for new content drops. They don't post about new content until it's very close to release either. It's only been very rare they have done so.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
Jesus, 10 gigabytes of patch in one week, just started the launcher and received another 5 gigabytes patch. The game is not on a XX terabyte-sized SSD, can't Cryptic or Gearbox make it a bit smaller? I don't have a download limit right now, but some might.

When its that size, it's usually just 'new graphics' that are going to appear in new content. They usually do better in that they don't usually push a pre-patch until the new graphics are finalized because whenever they do a major up to a map, or add a new zone, they need to have the client redownload all the STO game graphics because their reference tags have been changed/updated.
I've always found it's just as fast (if you have a high speed connection that plays well with STO - and yes many such connections still DON'T after 14 years as a liv game) to skip any pre-download and just let everything download the day the related new content launches (especially if you have a metered bandwidth connection.)

If it's new mission/zone content, I'm very curious what it is, considering their release window for new missions now feels like almost a year. ,_, They just released a new mission, so I have no clue what it could be.

I'm reasonably certain that it was the same chunk of data both times, too. Not the first time a pre-download dropped then didn't apply.
This is an MMO, not a Star Trek episode simulator. That would make for a terrible game.
Well, I was wrong. They DID update the graphics layout in STO (and that required a HUGE patch) - but it wasn't for new Map/Zone Graphics - it was so they could display your current Expertise total in the 'Assets' tab of the inventory screen, and now when a new item drops into your inventory - it displays a small 'NEW' icon over itself until you click/mouse over it.

Those changes and small graphics changes/additions required a complete 5GB or so redownload of the STO Graphics library to you PC client.

It also seems to have included changes to the tailor since the Neverwinter tailor "squish" bug is now happening in STO.
Another problem since the patch is that when browsing ships at the ship vendor and using the dropdown to display an alternate skin for the ship it only stays stable for a few seconds before snapping back to the default skin of the kitbash kit for whatever ship lineage you are looking at.
I get the feeling that maybe they are trying to simplify maintenance by merging the code were possible between the three games.
