  I just had the same today, but I had no problem salvaging the items.
  
  1 - Highlight the item in Inventory;
  2- Click the Cross button;
  3 - Select "Salvage" from the menu.
  
  Note, that changing an items' Protection Status will remove the "Salvage" entry from the context menu and some mainly lower-level and leveless items (such as default starship equipment) cannot be salvaged.
