While there have been several changes to the game recently, many of them quite nice, there is a need to upgrade the overall game. First and foremost is the need to upgrade the game engine. This would make it easier to hunt for bugs (Defera battlezone comes to mind), expand content, and address new player features. For example, allowing Captains to personalize their cabins, choose from a wider array of bridges, and allow for the expanded display of trophies could be monetized via micro transactions. Additionally, Options such as player housing on some planets, starbases, asteroids, Risa, etc. could also be offered under the same micro transaction system.
Needless to say, the game has been around for 12 years and the constant patches, updates, and expansions have taken their toll.
Further, the graphics and lighting engines can be upgraded across the board. This would allow STO to incorporate the current video card capabilities into the game. Currently, the 2.0 lighting upgrade ranges from very nice to blind a rat at a thousand yards thus obscuring the game art. I can only imagine how difficult it is to work within this system as it takes a very long time for changes to appear.
The upgrade can also take into consideration code optimization and server balancing issues and negate rubber banding and lag as much as possible. And have you even tried to find a specific ship in the game? It isn't easy. You have to try several places and then page through until you can find it. The loot tables also are in dire need of an upgrade. Finally, the lessons learned over the past 12 years can be incorporated into the new version.
Optionally, the foundry could return. The Armada system, which has proved to be a massive failure, could either be re-worked and found a real purpose or removed entirely. PvP could also be re-worked for both ground and space and made a viable and loved part of the game with awards, unique titles, uniforms, etcetera.
How would this be done?
STO would remain as it is for the time being while the new version is created independently. When that version is ready for player testing, accounts can be migrated to the servers and then load testing can begin and the bugs found and squashed. I propose that life members move first, then subscribers, then free to play. When the servers are deemed reliable, sunset Holodeck and migrate everyone else.
Yes, this will be expensive. That is why I have tied in the micro transactions. Interest in the Star Trek universe and games have never flagged and with new series like Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds, Star Trek is hotter than ever. Matching that to a game that is up to date with fresh graphics, gameplay, and frills would dovetail nicely with fan interest, and Paramount and the players would both be happy.
So make what would amount to an all-new game with all the expenses that that entails but everyone that has already paid for a LTS gets full access to this new game and whatever subscriber benefits it offers without paying any extra money?
Oh, the MTs you added? You are aware that bridge options didn't generate enough money, right? That they designed a number of bridge designs for the C-Store but that they didn't make anywhere near enough money to justify the design costs, especially when compared to other things like ships and uniforms, right? And that's where you think they can really monetize things?
No doubt some hardcore sector of the player base would like to pay for housing or that new bridge or that *perfect* trophy to hang on the wall of their Captain's quarters, but you're talking about what has been a generally failed idea as the way to cover costs for a whole new game.

I fixed that for you. They really only made four replica bridges from the main shows that were for sale. The early Z store bridges were reskinned versions of the free bridges—and were only a few hundred zen. They weren’t priced as viable revenue-generating products.
The real problem of bridges are not the cost/profit ratio—but the real problem is there are only about 7 actual cannon bridges. And people are less interested in non-canon bridge designs.
Realistically, what you are asking for would mean stopping active development on STO altogether and making a brand new game to replace it. Making a new MMO takes several years at least, so it would essentially mean maintenance mode for 3-5 years while we wait for the new game, and if the new game flops it would be a huge loss for Cryptic.

The bridge options didn't generate revenue because they were static. Players who can change something to their liking would be more accepting, I think. The current game is showing its age and that is beyond question. There are many things, like Deferra Battlezone, that cannot be completely fixed without a code rewrite. So I believe what I propose is justified on that alone.
If one examines Skyrim for example (which I also mod), much emphasis is placed on homes and collections. If done right, this could easily be a money maker and I would have no problems spending my cash on it if the prices were reasonable. Even if they choose not to do this, I will still play. But you can't earn more without putting out some effort.
What we need is a STO 1.X where ships are not the end all and be all of Cryptic's development objectives. Where there is an actual MMO to play where we are playing as a ship and crew that is part of a grand fleet of ships and crews, each performing heroic deeds on behalf of the Alliance, where gameplay does not make everyone out to be THE hero of the galaxy.
I keep pushing for a big metadata-driven endgame that triggers (or prevents the triggering of) events as a result of what players do (or don't do). It's not impossible to achieve this. It just needs a development team that is interested in doing more than just maintain the status quo in which ships are the priority deliverable product.
But they can't be bothered.
And any discussion of STO 2.0 means this thread will be locked.
Good job...
That's a bit of a defeatist attitude isn't it? I have not criticized the devs nor have I spoken about the quality of the game. I am merely asking for an upgrade, which I believe is now due 12 years after the initial roll out. There are great things about STO, because if there weren't, we would not be here on these forums. STO is an amazingly complex game and it has stood the test of time rather well. But if STO is to survive another decade or more, it must have an update to both the game engine and graphics engine. It's just that simple. I believe that it is better to bite the bullet and do it now instead of waiting.

This is an FCT topic, and thus the answer can be found in the FCT thread.
There is no reason to make STO 2 as STO is still alive and well. The License from CBS is not due to expire anytime soon.
Trying to state Gearbox being a reason does not make sense as they are not the Developer. They are the Distributor, much like Perfect World before it. Cryptic is still the Developer.

It's never going to happen, it's just not.

Because Gearbox is in the picture now.
